Adolescence is both universal and culturally constructed, resulting in diverse views about its defining characteristics. Theories of Adolescent Development brings together many theories surrounding this life stage in one comprehensive reference. It begins with an introduction to the nature of theory in the field of adolescence including an analysis of why there are so many theories in this field. The theory chapters are grouped into three sections: biological systems, psychological systems, and societal systems. Each chapter considers a family of theories including scope, assumptions, key concepts, contributions to the study of adolescence, approaches to measurement, applications, and a discussion of strengths and limitations of this family. A concluding chapter offers an integrative analysis, identifying five assumptions drawn from the theories that are essential guides for future research and application. Three questions provide a focus for comparison and contrast: How do the theories characterize the time and timing of adolescence? What do the theories emphasize as domains that are unfolding in movement toward maturity? Building on the perspective of Positive Youth Development, how do the theories differ in their views of developmental resources and conditions that may undermine development in adolescence? Includes biological, psychological and sociological theories Identifies historical roots, assumptions, key concepts, applications, measurement, strengths, and limitations of each theory Compares and contrasts theories Concludes with an integrated perspective across theories

Though the first edition of Theories of Adolescence was published by Random House a quarter of a century ago, the need for the continuous revisions of the book demonstrated both the importance of theories in understanding psychological phenomena and the ever changing nature of the field. Not only are new theories continuously emerging, but the nature of those theories of development has changed as well. Because few new macro-theories such as Freud's, Erikson's, and Piaget's have recently been proposed, one may be inclined to think that the era of global theories is part of history. However, as closer look reveals that numerous micro-theories have emerged, theories that focus on a more narrowly defined specific dimension of adolescent development, theories often intensively researched. The current edition of Theories of Adolescence reflects these developments.

Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Theorizing about the nature, control, and implications of adolescent development has been going on for at least 2000 years in Western culture, utilizing observational and essentially irrelevant and indiscriminate measurement research techniques. However, because these investigations were flawed by prejudgment and excessive subjectivity, the findings tended to be disorganized, irrelevant, incredible, non-explanatory and platitudinous. The most scientifically significant conceptual and research approach to adolescent development in my lifetime was made by Muzafer Sherif (Sherif & Cantril, 1947) of Columbia University during my student days there in the 1930's and 1940's. He insightfully conceptualized adolescence as a transitional, biosocial, interactional and marginal stage of personality development involving an abrupt shift from a derived and dependent status to an earned, independent, competence-based, marginal status and self-esteem with associated personality deficits and compensatory interim status. In my 1952 and thereafter textbooks, I applied this primary and central theory of adolescent development to all of the component functional areas of adolescence. (See Table of Contents)in a textbook of adolescent development (1952, 1954). In addition to its primary role as a graduate and honors undergraduate textbook for psychology and secondary-education majors, this book is also of interest to mental health specialists, pediatricians, counselors, the parents of adolescents and to the teachers of all secondary-school subjects and students.

The second edition of this book offers an expanded and updated blueprint for more consistently improved practice, emphasizing family process and structure instead of only individual developmental stages. Its chapters deftly summarize the recent knowledge base about families with adolescents and explains how to apply these results across mental health and social services disciplines. The new edition clearly illustrates family concerns and theoretical perspectives through real-world vignettes and cogent use of family assessment measures. Chapters offer a broad understanding of how diversity in all its forms – including race/ethnicity, culture, religion, and sexual orientation – has created a much more nuanced understanding of how families with adolescents are able to function within their environment. Both major challenges to families and communities form the backdrop of the second edition’s focus on forecasting in which the theoretical, empirical, and intervention literatures necessarily move in service to the health and well-being of families with adolescents. Featured topics include: Central concepts of family development, family systems, ecological, attachment, and social learning theories in relation to families with adolescents. Influence of the family on adolescent problem behavior, mental health concerns, substance use issues, educational attainment, and social competence outcomes. Selected studies on parenting behaviors, conflict resolution, and other major aspects of families with adolescents. Application topics in family-based intervention and prevention programs. Integrating theory, research, and applications to create a “triple threat” model. Diversity issues surrounding race/ethnicity, culture, religion, and sexual orientation. Families with Adolescents, Second Edition, is an essential resource for researchers, professors, and graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as professionals and other mental health clinicians, practitioners, and therapists in clinical child and developmental psychology, family studies, human development, sociology, social work, education, and all allied disciplines.

Handbook Of Adolescent Development written by Sandy Jackson and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-29 with Psychology categories.

Handbook of Adolescent Development fills a gap in the literature on adolescent development and behaviour: all of the authors of the various chapters were invited to include as many findings on European adolescents as possible. Through this specific emphasis, the handbook provides a complement to other reviews of the literature that are mostly based on North American samples. The contributors are all eminent researchers in the field and the individual chapters cover their specific areas of expertise. Theories of adolescence, along with emotional, physical and cognitive issues, are explored. Topics covered include families, peer relations, school and leisure time, as well as problem areas such as depression, drug consumption and delinquency. Handbook of Adolescent Development also incorporates a comprehensive review of the literature in the area and considers avenues for future research. This multidisciplinary text will be of interest to those studying and researching in the fields of developmental psychology, sociology, demography, epidemiology and criminology.
