Reviews the fundamental concepts behind the theory and computation of electromagnetic fields The book is divided in two parts. The first part covers both fundamental theories (such as vector analysis, Maxwell’s equations, boundary condition, and transmission line theory) and advanced topics (such as wave transformation, addition theorems, and fields in layered media) in order to benefit students at all levels. The second part of the book covers the major computational methods for numerical analysis of electromagnetic fields for engineering applications. These methods include the three fundamental approaches for numerical analysis of electromagnetic fields: the finite difference method (the finite difference time-domain method in particular), the finite element method, and the integral equation-based moment method. The second part also examines fast algorithms for solving integral equations and hybrid techniques that combine different numerical methods to seek more efficient solutions of complicated electromagnetic problems. Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields, Second Edition: Provides the foundation necessary for graduate students to learn and understand more advanced topics Discusses electromagnetic analysis in rectangular, cylindrical and spherical coordinates Covers computational electromagnetics in both frequency and time domains Includes new and updated homework problems and examples Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields, Second Edition is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate level electrical engineering students. This book can also be used as a reference for professional engineers interested in learning about analysis and computation skills.

"Electromagnetic Fields in Stratified Media" deals with an important branch of electromagnetic theory, which has many useful applications in subsurface communication, radar, and geophysical prospecting and diagnostics. The book introduces to the electromagnetic theory and wave propagation in complex media, while presenting detailed models for various media: 3, 4, N-layered media, boundary conditions, and anisotropic media. In particular, the complete solutions for a trapped surface wave and lateral wave in a three- or four-layered region, the complete solutions for low frequency wave propagation over a spherical surface coated with a dielectric layer, and the transient field of a horizontal dipole in the boundary layer of two different media are presented. The book is designed for the scientists and engineers engaged in antennas and propagation, EM theory and applications. Dr. Kai Li is Professor at Zhejiang University.

"An IEEE reprinting of this classic 1968 edition, FIELD COMPUTATION BY MOMENT METHODS is the first book to explore the computation of electromagnetic fields by the most popular method for the numerical solution to electromagnetic field problems. It presents a unified approach to moment methods by employing the concepts of linear spaces and functional analysis. Written especially for those who have a minimal amount of experience in electromagnetic theory, this book illustrates theoretical and mathematical concepts to prepare all readers with the skills they need to apply the method of moments to new, engineering-related problems. Written especially for those who have a minimal amount of experience in electromagnetic theory, theoretical and mathematical concepts are illustrated by examples that prepare all readers with the skills they need to apply the method of moments to new, engineering-related problems."

Translated from the Russian original (1981, Leningrad U. Press). The purpose of this work is not only to derive rigorous and stable analytic algorithms for calculating the fields in linear multilayer media, but to demonstrate the need for a very cautious approach to the monograph, that any process in a layered media is unique, due to the complexity of its dependence on the geometrical and material properties of the elements of the medium. This monograph discusses mathematical and conceptual methods used in the analysis of electromagnetic fields and waves. Dyadic algebra is reviewed and armed with new identities to be applied throughout the book. The power of dyadic operations is seen when working with boundary, sheet, and interface conditions, medium equations, field transformations, Green functions, plane wave problems, vector circuit theory, multipole and image sources. Dyadic algebra allows convenience in handling problems involving chiral and bianisotropic media, of recent interest because of their wide range of potential applications. The final chapter gives, for the first time in book form, a unified presentation of EIT, the exact image theory, introduced by this author and colleagues. EIT is a general method for solving problems involving layered media by replacing them through image sources located in complex space. The main emphasis of the monograph is not on specific results but methods of analysis. The work will interest research-level electromagnetic physicists and engineers, and applied mathematicians.

The contributions of this book represent only a small sample of the work of the many researcher electromagneticians who have had the pleasure of being associated with Professor Papas, either as students or as colleagues. Many of us continue to work in the many and diverse areas that modem electro magnetism encompasses. There is, however, a common thread that was derived from our association with Professor Papas that has greatly influenced our thinking and technical style of expression. Professor Papas, from his studies at Harvard, brought with him to Pasadena a very fundamental and classical point of view that was instilled in all those who were associated with him. He saw research problems as a combination offundamental physical and mathematical principles and the electromagnetic "reality. " He searched and demanded clarity and often, in the rather involved and engaging discussions which took place in his office, he demanded that the "baby picture" be clearly drawn on the blackboard. This requirement, certainly for some of us who were working in widely varied subjects ranging from relativistic plasmas to almost periodic media, has forced us to reexamine the fundamentals. The clear and lucid marriage of fundamental concepts to applications has been the trademark of Professor Papas's intellectual tradition, and has greatly in fluenced the thinking of all of those who have associated with him.

International Series of Monographs in Electromagnetic Waves, Volume 3: Electromagnetic Waves in Stratified Media provides information pertinent to the electromagnetic waves in media whose properties differ in one particular direction. This book discusses the important feature of the waves that enables communications at global distances. Organized into 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the general analysis for the electromagnetic response of a plane stratified medium comprising of any number of parallel homogeneous layers. This text then explains the reflection of electromagnetic waves from planar stratified media. Other chapters consider the oblique reflection of plane electromagnetic waves from a continuously stratified medium. This book discusses as well the fundamental theory of wave propagation around a sphere. The final chapter deals with the theory of propagation in a spherically stratified medium. This book is a valuable resource for electrical engineers, scientists, and research workers.
