This dissertation explores the applicability of Semantic Web technologies for the harmonization of the Dutch historical censuses, in particular the Resource Description Framework (RDF). The use of historical census data for longitudinal research purposes, especially when dealing with aggregated data, has been hampered by the lack of comparability over the years. Harmonization is a prerequisite to enable longitudinal research with these data in order to deal with changing variables, values, classification systems, table structures, and enumeration methods. As a result of this research, we propose a 'source-oriented harmonization workflow' and associated 'data model' based on the RDF concept. Our workflow and data model enable users to harmonize historical datasets in a structured, flexible, and accountable manner. By applying these methods and techniques, the complete censuses, totaling 2,249 tables, have been converted into RDF and made available for others to reuse as Linked Open Data. In addition, we have systematically harmonized a subset of the data. This subset contains the tables with housing and demographic variables over the period 1795–2010. Our harmonizations have contributed to the creation of new social historical variables and classification systems in the Linked Open Data cloud. By using open methods and technologies, we offer a practical basis to other researchers in the field of digital humanities to build on, particularly to those involved in data harmonization.

This edited volume discusses the impact of several major databases containing historical longitudinal population data. The creation and development of these databases have greatly expanded research possibilities in history, demography, sociology, and other disciplines. The present collection includes seven contributions, on eight databases, that had a wide impact on research in various disciplines. Each database had its own unique genesis and readers are informed about how these databases have changed the course of research in historical demography and related disciplines, how settled findings were challenged or confirmed, and how innovative investigations were launched and implemented. The volume serves as an essential resource for scholars in the field of historical life course studies, offering insights into the transformative power of these databases and their potential for future advancements.

Semantic Web technologies enable people to create data stores on the Web, build vocabularies, and write rules for handling data. They have been in use for several years now, and knowledge extraction and knowledge discovery are two key aspects investigated in a number of research fields which can potentially benefit from the application of semantic web technologies, and specifically from the development and reuse of ontologies. This book, Applications and Practices in Ontology Design, Extraction, and Reasoning, has as its main goal the provision of an overview of application fields for semantic web technologies. In particular, it investigates how state-of-the-art formal languages, models, methods, and applications of semantic web technologies reframe research questions and approaches in a number of research fields. The book also aims to showcase practical tools and background knowledge for the building and querying of ontologies. The first part of the book presents the state-of-the-art of ontology design, applications and practices in a number of communities, and in doing so it provides an overview of the latest approaches and techniques for building and reusing ontologies according to domain-dependent and independent requirements. Once the data is represented according to ontologies, it is important to be able to query and reason about them, also in the presence of uncertainty, vagueness and probabilities. The second part of the book covers some of the latest advances in the fields of ontology, semantics and reasoning, without losing sight of the book’s practical goals.
