Substance misuse is one of the more common, yet baffling, problems confronting the practising mental health professional today. The issues involved in the misuse of substances can be so complex that some practitioners are inclined to avoid working with clients who have been diagnosed with a drug abuse problem.; This new guidebook is designed to assist clinicians with the task of conceptualizing, understanding and intervening with persons who abuse substances. It accomplishes this by offering practical suggestions, assessment procedures, and change strategies directed at the thoughts, feelings and behaviours believed to support a drug lifestyle. Although the approach described in this book utilizes a number of cognitive-behavioural techniques, the approach is unique in the sense that it also deals with the fear of change that frequently interferes with a client's ability to benefit from therapy. It also considers change strategies used by people who have escaped from a drug lifestyle without any type of treatment or formal intervention.; Momentarily arresting the lifestyle is the first step of intervention. This is followed by skill development in which the conditions, choices and cognitions associated with a drug lifestyle are targeted for intervention and change. In the final phase of this approach, the client is engaged in the resocialization process whereby he or she is encouraged to develop ways of thinking and behaving that are incompatible with continued misuse of psychoactive substances. The end result is a concise, yet comprehensive, examination of ways clinicans might facilitate change in persons previously committed to a drug lifestyle.

Making Research Matter written by Stephen Goss and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-07 with Psychology categories.

Making Research Matter is an original contribution to the growing field of work-based learning with a focus on research aimed at developing the practice of counselling and psychotherapy addressing the practice-research gap. Stephen Goss, Christine Stevens and their contributors explore the links between research and professional practice and show how this can impact on practice to make a genuine, demonstrable contribution to the development of therapeutic services, good practice and the understanding of psychological and social issues. The book is divided into two parts. Part one gives an account of the thinking, ethos and development of work-based learning. It explores the importance of the in-depth rigorous and reflexive inquiry skills needed to sustain research project work. Part two presents nine studies of work-based psychotherapy or counselling related research. Each account sets out the focus and motivation of the study and critically discusses how the research design was developed, the choice of methods employed, with an explanation of the outcomes. A vital part of each account is a review of how the research has been used to make changes and developments in the work setting. Making Research Matter provides insights into the lived experience of the practitioner-researcher, to stimulate the reader to generate their own ideas for research enquiry. It presents a range of proven, successful research projects, and shows how they have made a difference in the development of theory and practice which lead to positive change, better services and more informed practice. It will be an essential resource for psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, and those involved in coaching and clinical psychology.

A book like no other on the subject of Therapeutic Community (TC). The book is not only an elaboration of the principles and practices of the TC, but an exposition of its original concepts and their relevance to current practices in the treatment of addiction. It provides numerous examples that add clarity and experiential flavor to the entire presentation. There is a dearth of literature on the Concept-Based TC, particularly a standard of practice in the applications of its methods and approaches. Historically, most TC practitioners rely on experiential knowledge in implementing TC programs and disseminating information to clients. It is a book for all practitioners of the arts and science of healing and recovery from substance abuse and other addictions, including some mental afflictions. It covers a wide range of subjects related to evidence-based practices in the treatment of addiction. Besides tackling important issues and challenges facing the TC, it also provides ideas on how to bring the TC approach up to date with current understanding of addiction and treatment practices. Included in the book are client Workbooks, one on Orientation and Introduction of the TC and another on the Encounter Group, both of which are designed to help clients adapt to the TC environment more rapidly. The book is written both from experience and deep understanding of the rich traditions and philosophy of the TC and its potentials for healing addiction and other modern human maladies.

Using Mental Imagery In Counselling And Psychotherapy written by Valerie Thomas and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-14 with Psychology categories.

The therapeutic potential of working with clients' mental images is widely acknowledged, yet there is still little in the counselling and psychotherapy literature on more inclusive approaches to the clinical applications of mental imagery. Using Mental Imagery in Counselling and Psychotherapy is a unique, accessible guide for counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to develop their expertise in this important therapeutic practice. Contemporary practitioners have at their disposal a large repertoire of imagery methods and procedures comprising the contributions from different therapeutic schools and clinical innovators. Valerie Thomas identifies some of the common features in these approaches and offers a transtheoretical framework that supports integrative practitioners in understanding and using mental imagery to enhance therapeutic processes. The book: Examines the development of the theory and practice of mental imagery within a wider context of the history of imagination as a healing modality; Describes the different ways that mental imagery has been incorporated into therapeutic practice and evaluates recent developments; Reviews explanations of the therapeutic efficacy of mental imagery and considers how recent theoretical concepts provide a means of understanding the role that mental images play in processing experience; Includes reflections on ways to develop more inclusive theory and proposes a model that can inform integrative practice. Using a wide range of clinical vignettes to illustrate theory and cutting-edge research, Valerie Thomas proposes a new integrated model of practice. Providing clear and detailed guidance on applying the model to clinical practice, the book will be essential reading for psychotherapists and counsellors, both in practice and training, who wish to harness the therapeutic efficacy of mental imagery.

Panacea or revolution? 'Evidence-based medicine' and 'cost-effectiveness' have become buzz-phrases for a wide variety of initiatives and planning processes which aim to give patients treatments that will benefit them. On the surface this seems a reasonable idea, but there are underlying currents which cast doubt on the process and reveal methodological problems, which must be understood if the concepts are to be properly used. Assuming no prior knowledge of the field, and written in the clear, straightforward manner the author uses in the highly successful Health Economics for the Uninitiated, this book is a short practical guide on how to use these concepts, and how to avoid their pitfalls. It will appeal to doctors, nurses, health service managers, patient organizations, academics and students of health care. It will provide essential support to those working in health care companies, and in the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industry.
