The book is adorable, highly entertaining and describes how a conductor interacts with the musicians to create a magnificent performance, The composition called for a Percussionist to dip a vibrating Gong in and out of a tub of water to create a modulation of the Gong sound. The Stage Crew, who had to drag the tub of water on and off the stage next to the Concert Master for every rehearsal and performance were not very happy about this. There idea of "getting even" was to place a goldfish in the tub of water right before the performance. When the Percussionist went on stage just before the performance was to begin and saw the goldfish in the tub, he looked back at the percussion section smiling as he pointed to the tub. We had no idea what he was smiling about. Meanwhile the Stage Crew was having a good laugh as they watched from the wings of the stage. After the performance, the Percussionist told us what happened and explained when the vibrating Gong was placed into the tub the goldfish began to swim rapidly around the tub jumping up and down. By the end of the performance, the goldfish died. But don't be alarmed, in our story the goldfish does not die.

For 26 years I had the best seat in the house - often in the center of the stage, frequently in the spotlight, always in the clear view of conductors and the audience and constantly amid the passions that come with making good music. This is the story of how I got that seat, of many of the highs and a few of the lows that come with sitting there and of some of the wonderful people who shared my journey. Here are the details behind the creation of William Kraft's Timpani Concerto Number One, the mystery of being honored with a titled chair, the fun of playing on the ISO's softball team and the benefits of studying timpani with Freddie, Eddie and Dan. Carnegie Hall became a special place, conductors from Richard Lert to Henry Mancini earned my respect, and I had an insider's view of the major leagues of orchestral music. Away from music, I led another life as a sportscaster, broadcasting games and interviewing many of America's finest athletes. A little of that slips into these pages, too. There was never a dull moment Behind The Copper Fence. keywords: Music, Percussion, Timpani, Memoir, Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Roanoke, CCM, Auditions, William Kraft

The Sensuous Cinema Of Wong Kar Wai written by Gary Bettinson and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

The widely acclaimed films of Wong Kar-wai are characterized by their sumptuous yet complex visual and sonic style. This study of Wong’s filmmaking techniques uses a poetics approach to examine how form, music, narration, characterization, genre, and other artistic elements work together to produce certain effects on audiences. Bettinson argues that Wong’s films are permeated by an aesthetic of sensuousness and “disturbance” achieved through techniques such as narrative interruptions, facial masking, opaque cuts, and other complex strategies. The effect is to jolt the viewer out of complete aesthetic absorption. Each of the chapters focuses on a single aspect of Wong’s filmmaking. The book also discusses Wong’s influence on other filmmakers in Hong Kong and around the world. The Sensuous Cinema of Wong Kar-wai will appeal to all who are interested in authorship and aesthetics in film studies, to scholars in Asian studies, media and cultural studies, and to anyone with an interest in Hong Kong cinema in general, and Wong’s films in particular. “In this carefully written study, Gary Bettinson offers a critical assessment not only of the stylistic features of Wong Kar-wai’s films but also of the scholarship that has developed around them. Arguing against the facile culturalism that tends to dominate such scholarship, this book does full justice to Wong’s cinematic methods in a series of impressively well-informed and informative readings.” —Rey Chow, Duke University
