The Nigerian Civil War left behind unsung heroes--women and children. Some of them had befriended soldiers to ensure the survival of their families. These children and others born out of wedlock constitute a community of people who have identity crises rocking their lives. Also, veterans of the war, abandoned by the authorities, were left as ordinary individuals to contend with the war's destructive impact. This is the focus of the title story, "Other People's Children." "Homeless" captures the helplessness of isolated communities that are ill-prepared to battle the insurgency in northern Nigeria. "Habiba's Triumph" tells of the phenomenon of forced marriages, even in literate families. Literacy, however, offers a victim the freedom of choice, which people of previous generations did not enjoy. "Broken Lives" exposes the pain of broken relationships on college campuses. While a young man walks away unscathed to enter another relationship, a young woman is left to nurse the wounds for a lifetime. "The People's Court" is a reflection of people's rush to Nigeria's capital city, Abuja, in search of greener pastures. Some leave home only to compete with rodents in settlements that are constantly demolished without adequate notice or compensation by the authorities so as to ensure conformity to the city's master plan.

In these ten unsettling tales of unexpected madness master storyteller Roald Dahl explores what happens when we let go our sanity. Among other stories, you'll meet the husband with a jealous fixation on the family cat, the landlady who wants her guests to stay forever, the man whose taste for pork leads him astray and the wife with a pathological fear of being late. The Desert Remembers My Name written by Kathleen Alcal‡ and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

My parents always told me I was Mexican. I was Mexican because they were Mexican. This was sometimes modified to ÒMexican American,Ó since I was born in California, and thus automatically a U.S. citizen. But, my parents said, this, too, was once part of Mexico. My father would say this with a sweeping gesture, taking in the smog, the beautiful mountains, the cars and houses and fast-food franchises. When he made that gesture, all was cleared away in my mindÕs eye to leave the hazy impression of a better place. We were here when the white people came, the Spaniards, then the Americans. And we will be here when they go away, he would say, and it will be part of Mexico again. Thus begins a lyrical and entirely absorbing collection of personal essays by esteemed Chicana writer and gifted storyteller Kathleen Alcal‡. Loosely linked by an exploration of the many meanings of Òfamily,Ó these essays move in a broad arc from the stories and experiences of those close to her to those whom she wonders about, like Andrea Yates, a mother who drowned her children. In the process of digging and sifting, she is frequently surprised by what she unearths. Her family, she discovers, were Jewish refugees from the Spanish Inquisition who took on the trappings of Catholicism in order to survive. Although the essays are in many ways personal, they are also universal. When she examines her family history, she is encouraging us to inspect our own families, too. When she investigates a family secret, she is supporting our own search for meaning. And when she writes that being separated from our indigenous culture is Òa form of illiteracy,Ó we know exactly what she means. After reading these essays, we find that we have discovered not only why Kathleen Alcal‡ is a writer but also why we appreciate her so much. She helps us to find ourselves.

Here are ten stories that impart unexpected insights from a unique and gifted writer. The surfing pilgrims who lose their paradise in the title story, The Johari Mirror; the rock-and-roll travelers in Dead Fish Eye; the clay-stained miners of The Jackass Hill Insane Asylum; all exhibit their mortal flaws, innocence, and conceits; in worlds where lives shift unpredictably, outcomes are mysterious. In Los Angeles, in the swinging sixties, a college student meets up with the Manson Family and confronts their evil. In Ohio, the Great Serpent Mound becomes metaphor for death and rebirth in the nuclear age. In 1950's Tennessee, a young boy is treetop witness to violence and Ethnic Evolution. A park ranger in Tears to the National Anthem recounts a momentous and strange mass-weeping on the White House lawn. These stories reveal the late 20th Century in exhilarating and profound transition; a life lived in the shadow of chaos. A successful Russian immigrant murders his family and commits suicide, echoing Crime and Punishment in the derangement of A Real Russian Tragedy. The Not So New Age pilgrims sing in dolphin and get a good dose of unmasking. Elvis Presley and Frederick Chopin return to remind us of the arousing possibilities of music, and of its tragic disappointment. The Johari Mirror presents the range and versatility, the artistry of language and ideas -- from tightly controlled to dazzlingly free, from mock-adolescent to piercing critic -- of a bold and illuminating writer. The voices and tales, fiction, memoir and commentary, all make the page sing in genuinely prophetic tones. Visit the author's web site at www.worldcat.com

A postman turns up with an unexpected letter one rainy afternoon in Cherrapunji, a letter that will turn fourteen-year-old Saphira's world upside down. Dalinia's life seems perfect, with a successful husband, beautiful children and a well-appointed home. But the arrival of a handsome competitor on the manicured greens of the Shillong golf course brings back a flood of unwanted memories of her troubled past. Told in a simple, lyrical style, Bijoya Sawian's collection of ten short stories is not only an enthralling read but, like her debut novel Shadow Men, transports the reader to a place little known to outsiders: Meghalaya. Strains of love, loss and longing run through all these stories, whose endings are not mere shocks, but revelations. Both her books should be read for a better understanding of India's northeast - its communities, its landscape, and in particular, the lives of the women who live there.
