This collection of essays addresses the lack of shelter—one of the most basic elements of human adaptation—now experienced by many Americans. Based on the presupposition that shelter is a basic human right in the world's richest, most advanced nation, the authors of these essays look more closely than others have yet done at the causes of the current low-income housing crisis and homelessness. Ten anthropologists and a mental health worker use participant observation and other ethnographic methods to observe and document the experiential and geographic diversity of U.S. homelessness. Each chapter focuses on a specific geographic area—urban, suburban, or rural—and a specific category of homeless people—families with children, solitary adults, or both. Based on their findings, the authors also present policy recommendations to ameliorate the housing shortage and prevent homelessness at local, state, and federal levels.

Jerri Garretson lived a total of 33 years in Manhattan, Kansas, in three periods. This book features 55 topics about life in the years she was growing up there, plus 13 mini-biographies of teachers and neighbors that were important in her life. It is illustrated with over 800 photos of people, places, and events, and even everyday objects most of us no longer use. To assist readers unfamiliar with Manhattan, she has included maps, and to anchor local events to the nation and the world, there is a timeline. The book is thoroughly indexed. Though many dates and events are mentioned, it is not a history of the city, but rather an entertaining account about the way of life in that time and place. Please be aware that this is a 298 page, heavily illustrated book in the same fixed format as the printed book. As such, it is a download of about large download of approximately 227 MB and will take much longer to download than a novel in flowing format that has no illustrations.

Chrissy Landress and four of her friends are the victims of a buyout of their local telephone company in the small town of Chinquapin, Fl. They lost their jobs and are quickly running out of money. They’ve all moved into Chrissy’s ancestral home, Magnolia Hall. The friends have their backs to the wall and must think outside the box...extremely outside the box...in order to survive. They decide to open a high class gentlemen’s club. They must keep the operation of the brothel under the radar, but even with all the clandestine machinations, word spreads, and the club prospers. Everything is copacetic until a local VIP dies in the bordello. The club workers must cover up the death of the guest by making his demise appear the result of a car accident. Chrissy’s boyfriend, the local sheriff Hank Albritton, has turned a blind eye to his lady love’s business endeavor, but he discovers the guest was murdered. Where, how, and by whom is a mystery. Could the killer be a member of the Magnolia Hall staff...or another guest? The killing attracts national attention to the plight of many American workers who lost their jobs during the Great Recession, and the women and men of Magnolia Hall attain celebrity status, but more scandals loom on the horizon for Chrissy and her friends.

No Place Like Home written by Bohdan S. Kordan and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-15 with History categories.

No Place Like Home chronicles a little-known episode in Canada’s national history: when internment was first employed during the Great War under the War Measures Act. Highlighting the problem of immigrant fit and belonging, Bohdan Kordan shows how legal, political, and cultural frameworks modelled an understanding of the role and place of immigrants originating from enemy lands and how, amid the economic, social, and political uncertainties of war, internment as an instrument of security policy and a political choice altered the lives of thousands of innocent people. No Place Like Home brings to the fore new perspectives on both Canadian internment and the role and responsibility of government in war. Focusing on the status of enemy aliens and the blurring of the military/civilian distinction, the book also takes a broader social view of the period and offers a critical assessment of the various camp experiences. Kordan articulates how internment, truly known only to those who endured it, can still have deeper meaning as shared history and enlists compelling reasons to comprehend and honour it.

For fans of Inkheart and The Land of Stories, a sweeping, timeless middle grade fantasy about reclaiming and redefining home Lan is caught between two countries, and neither one feels quite like home. A recent immigrant to Canada from Vi?t Nam, Lan is lonely in the basement apartment she shares with her dad. Her mom and little brother are still in Vi?t Nam, and she misses them so much. Her books are the only things that bring her comfort. No one is more surprised than Lan when a mysterious wind whisks her right into the pages of her latest fantasy read—and more shocking still is the fact that she summoned the winds herself! Plunged into the magical world of Silva, Lan learns she is a budding witch with the power to help Annabelle and Marlow, the very characters she’d just been reading about, save their home. As Lan faces off against tree guardians, moving corn mazes, heart-eaters, and thoughtless kings, she finds that Silva is not so different from Toronto: new homes can be messy, wherever they are. Now, torn between several places at once, Lan confronts an important question: how do you redefine a lost home?

Noplace Like Home uses four masterpieces of Russian literature--Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, Ivan Goncharov's Oblomov, Evgenii Zamiatin's We, and Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita--to show the successes and failings in Russia's search for home and self. Interdisciplinary in spirit, Noplace Like Home introduces Russian culture for the first time to the field of "home studies," which explores human identity in terms of man's relationship with domestic space. This broad social context, together with general cultural patterns expressed in the novels, encourages readers to consider even the most current events in Russian society--where identity and stability are again key issues--in terms of "home," "homelessness," and "noplace."
