While much progress has been made since the time of Flory and Huggins in the understanding of polymer blend thermodynamics, and ongoing research continues to elucidate how polymer blend phase behavior is affected by the presence of small-molecule solvents or exposure to elevated pressures, very little work has been reported on the combined effects of a pressurized small-molecule solvent on polymer blend phase behavior. The focus of this research is to improve the current state of fundamental understanding regarding how and why the phase behavior of polymer blends changes as pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) is added. The first part of this work provides a broad overview of previous efforts that explore various thermodynamic and kinetic processes involving the use of CO2 in conjunction with multicomponent polymer systems. The following chapters discuss details of research performed primarily on three blend systems: polystyrene (PS)/polyisoprene (PI), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/ poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/poly(ethylmethylsiloxane) (PEMS). The competing roles of hydrostatic pressure and CO2 dissolution on the phase behavior of both the PS/PI and the PDMS/PEMS blends, which exhibit upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior, are systematically established. Additionally, a complete pseudo-binary temperature-composition phase diagram of the PDMS/PEMS blend is generated as a function of CO2 pressure. To compare the predictive abilities of the Flory-Huggins and Sanchez-Lacombe equations of state, interaction parameters of the PDMS/PEMS blend are predicted as functions of temperature and CO2 pressure. The phase behavior of, as well as intermolecular interactions in, PMMA/PVDF blends have been probed in the presence of CO2 by small-angle neutron and x-ray scattering (SANS and SAXS, respectively). These PMMA/PVDF blends, which display both UCST and lower critical solution temperature (LCST.

Thermodynamics is an indispensable tool for developing a large and growing fraction of new polymers and polymer blends. These two volumes show the researcher how thermodynamics can be used to rank polymer pairs in order of immiscibility, including the search for suitable chemical structure of compatibilizers. Because of the great current commercial interest in this most dynamic sector of the polymer industry, there is high interest in studying their physical and mechanical properties, their structures, and the processes of their formation and manufacture. These Books are dedicated to Analysis of the Thermodynamics of Polymer Blends. Thermodynamic behavior of blends determines the compatibility of the components, their morphological features, rheological behavior, and microphase structures. As a result, the most important physical and mechanical characteristics of blends can be identified.

Polymeric materials include plastics, gels, synthetic fibres, and rubbers. They are all-important both in industry and in daily life. Unlike liquid water, ice, or sugar solution, polymers are not homogeneous. They are said to consist of two or more phases, and their production and processing, as well as their properties and uses, depend on an understanding of the transitions that take place between these phases. This new textbook uses fundamental principles to classify phase separation phenomena in polymer systems, and describes simple molecular models explaining the observed behaviour.

Throughout this work, a lattice model was used to capture the behavior of polymer systems. First, the phase behavior of solutions which contain polymer solute in an alkane solvent was investigated. The phase diagrams of these solutions are characterized by a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Previous studies by Anderson [1], demonstrated that the LCST in a series of linear polyethylene / alkane solutions can be predicted using pure polymer and solvent data. Attention was now turned to polymers which are branched in structure, due to the presence of either methyl or ethyl groups in their backbone. The LCSTs for a set of PIB solutions were successfully captured using a combination of pure PIB, pure alkane, and mixture data in a manner similar to that set forth by Anderson [1]. The results for other branched polymer solutions suggest that new methods to fit the pure component data and mixture data at higher temperature and lower pressure may be useful. The second section of this work focused on polymer solutions and blends which exhibit two types of phase behavior; an LCST and an upper critical solution temperature (UCST). Using pure component data for each of the polymers and solvent, as well as mixture data which characterized only the UCST, it was demonstrated that the physics associated with these systems could be modeled with a set of parameters which were temperature, pressure and composition independent. Several hypothetical systems were also presented to demonstrate how the miscibility of these systems varies upon changes in model parameters which tune the polymer molecular weight and solvent-polymer interactions. In addition, a hypothetical polymer blend which exhibits a UCST, as well as two LCSTs were also presented and loosely compared to a real system. Finally, copolymer / homopolymer blends in which the copolymer contains A and B type monomers and the homopolymer us made up of A type monomers, were investigated. To test the plausibility of using minimal data to capture partial miscibility in these blends, each copolymer was first constructed using a simple algorithm which requires only homopolymer data. Agreement was found between the constructed and real copolymer data sets. Several routes to capture partial miscibility in constructed copolymer / homopolymer blends were then presented.

Polymer Thermodynamics: Blends, Copolymers and Reversible Polymerization describes the thermodynamic basis for miscibility as well as the mathematical models used to predict the compositional window of miscibility and construct temperature versus volume-fraction phase diagrams. The book covers the binary interaction model, the solubility parameter approach, and the entropic difference model. Using equation of state (EOS) theories, thermodynamic models, and information from physical properties, it illustrates the construction of phase envelopes. The book presents nine EOS theories, including some that take into account molecular weight effects. Characteristic values are given in tables. It uses the binary interaction model to predict the compositional window of miscibility for copolymer/homopolymer blends and blends of copolymers and terpolymers with common monomers. It discusses Hansen fractional solubility parameter values, six phase diagram types, the role of polymer architecture in phase behavior, and the mathematical framework for multiple glass transition temperatures found in partially miscible polymer blends. The author also illustrates biomedical and commercial applications of nanocomposites, the properties of various polymer alloys, Fick’s laws of diffusion and their implications during transient events, and the use of the dynamic programming method in the sequence alignment of DNA and proteins. The final chapter reviews the thermodynamics of reversible polymerization and copolymerization. Polymer blends offer improved performance/cost ratios and the flexibility to tailor products to suit customers’ needs. Exploring physical phenomena, such as phase separation, this book provides readers with methods to design polymer blends and predict the phase behavior of binary polymer blends using desktop computers.
