Thermomechanical Behavior of Dissipative Composite Materials presents theoretical and numerical tools for studying materials and structures under fully coupled thermomechanical conditions, focusing primarily on composites. The authors cover many aspects of the modeling process and provide the reader with the knowledge required to identify the conservation laws and thermodynamic principles that must be respected by most solid materials. The book also covers construct constitutive laws for various types of dissipative processes, both rate-independent and rate-dependent, by utilizing a rigorous thermodynamic framework. Topics explored are useful for graduate students and advanced researchers who wish to strengthen their knowledge of the application of thermodynamic principles. Identifies the conservation laws and thermodynamic principles that need to be respected by any solid material Presents construct, proper constitutive laws for various types of dissipative processes, both rate-independent and rate-dependent, by utilizing an appropriate thermodynamic framework Includes robust numerical algorithms that permit accuracy and efficiency in the calculations of very complicated constitutive laws Uses rigorous homogenization theories for materials and structures with both periodic and random microstructure

Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

This pioneering book presents new models for the thermomechanical behavior of composite materials and structures taking into account internal physico-chemical transformations such as thermodecomposition, sublimation and melting at high temperatures (up to 3000 K). It is of great importance for the design of new thermostable materials and for the investigation of reliability and fire safety of composite structures. It also supports the investigation of interaction of composites with laser irradiation and the design of heat-shield systems. Structural methods are presented for calculating the effective mechanical and thermal properties of matrices, fibres and unidirectional, reinforced by dispersed particles and textile composites, in terms of properties of their constituent phases. Useful calculation methods are developed for characteristics such as the rate of thermomechanical erosion of composites under high-speed flow and the heat deformation of composites with account of chemical shrinkage. The author expansively compares modeling results with experimental data, and readers will find unique experimental results on mechanical and thermal properties of composites under temperatures up to 3000 K. Chapters show how the behavior of composite shells under high temperatures is simulated by the finite-element method and so cylindrical and axisymmetric composite shells and composite plates are investigated under local high-temperature heating. The book will be of interest to researchers and to engineers designing composite structures, and invaluable to materials scientists developing advanced performance thermostable materials.

All real materials in one way or another, exhibit a departure from ideal elastic behaviour, even at very small strain values. Under cyclic deformation, these departtures result in irreversible energy losses in material. The causes of such losses are many, and include the irreversible transfer of mechanical energy into heat, growth of cracks and other defects, and the microplastic deformaton of crystals to name a few. Several terms have been suggested to define these phenomena including damping, energy dissipation, imperfect elasticity and internal friction. This book is about materials damping; with damping or energy dissipation processes in vibrating solids.

The mechanical behavior of many applied materials arises from their microstructure. Thus, to aid the design, development and industrialization of new materials, robust computational homogenization methods are indispensable. The present thesis is devoted to investigating and developing FFT-based micromechanics solvers for efficiently computing the (thermo)mechanical response of nonlinear composite materials with complex microstructures.

Multiscale Modeling Approaches for Composites outlines the fundamentals of common multiscale modeling techniques and provides detailed guidance for putting them into practice. Various homogenization methods are presented in a simple, didactic manner, with an array of numerical examples. The book starts by covering the theoretical underpinnings of tensors and continuum mechanics concepts, then passes to actual micromechanic techniques for composite media and laminate plates. In the last chapters the book covers advanced topics in homogenization, including Green’s tensor, Hashin-Shtrikman bounds, and special types of problems. All chapters feature comprehensive analytical and numerical examples (Python and ABAQUS scripts) to better illustrate the theory. Bridges theory and practice, providing step-by-step instructions for implementing multiscale modeling approaches for composites and the theoretical concepts behind them Covers boundary conditions, data-exchange between scales, the Hill-Mandel principle, average stress and strain theorems, and more Discusses how to obtain composite properties using different boundary conditions Includes access to a companion site, featuring the numerical examples, Python and ABACUS codes discussed in the book

This volume contains the proceedings of a conference on the residual stresses in composites. It offers three interrelated objectives: present developments in the measurement of residuals composites; present analytical predictions of residual stresses and their impact on composite properties; and documents the role of the residual stresses during thermo-mechanical excursions of the composites.
