Balakrishnan and Normal L. Johnson Discover the latest advances in discrete distributions theory The Third Edition of the critically acclaimed Univariate Discrete Distributions provides a self-contained, systematic treatment of the theory, derivation, and application of probability distributions for count data. Generalized zeta-function and q-series distributions have been added and are covered in detail. New families of distributions, including Lagrangian-type distributions, are integrated into this thoroughly revised and updated text. Additional applications of univariate discrete distributions are explored to demonstrate the flexibility of this powerful method. A thorough survey of recent statistical literature draws attention to many new distributions and results for the classical distributions. Approximately 450 new references along with several new sections are introduced to reflect the current literature and knowledge of discrete distributions. Beginning with mathematical, probability, and statistical fundamentals, the authors provide clear coverage of the key topics in the field, including: Families of discrete distributions Binomial distribution Poisson distribution Negative binomial distribution Hypergeometric distributions Logarithmic and Lagrangian distributions Mixture distributions Stopped-sum distributions Matching, occupancy, runs, and q-series distributions Parametric regression models and miscellanea Emphasis continues to be placed on the increasing relevance of Bayesian inference to discrete distribution, especially with regard to the binomial and Poisson distributions. New derivations of discrete distributions via stochastic processes and random walks are introduced without unnecessarily complex discussions of stochastic processes. Throughout the Third Edition, extensive information has been added to reflect the new role of computer-based applications. With its thorough coverage and balanced presentation of theory and application, this is an excellent and essential reference for statisticians and mathematicians.

The idea of the book is to present a text that is useful for both students of quantitative sciences and practitioners who work with univariate or multivariate probabilistic models. Since the text should also be suitable for self-study, excessive formalism is avoided though mathematical rigor is retained. A deeper insight into the topics is provided by detailed examples and illustrations. The book covers the standard content of a course in probability and statistics. However, the second edition includes two new chapters about distribution theory and exploratory data analysis. The first-mentioned chapter certainly goes beyond the standard material. It is presented to reflect the growing practical importance of developing new distributions. The second new chapter studies intensively one- and bidimensional concepts like assymetry, kurtosis, correlation and determination coefficients. In particular, examples are intended to enable the reader to take a critical look at the appropriateness of the geometrically motivated concepts.

Founding Editor: Gabriel Altmann The series Quantitative Linguistics publishes books on all aspects of quantitative methods and models in linguistics, text analysis and related research fields. Specifically, the scope of the series covers the whole spectrum of theoretical and empirical research, ultimately striving for an exact mathematical formulation and empirical testing of hypotheses: observation and description of linguistic data, application of methods and models, discussion of methodological and epistemological issues, modelling of language and text phenomena.

This is a book of problems in probability and their solutions. The work has been written for undergraduate students who have a background in calculus and wish to study probability.Probability theory is a key part of contemporary mathematics. The subject plays a key role in the insurance industry, modelling financial markets, and statistics in general — including all those fields of endeavour to which statistics is applied (e.g. health, physical sciences, engineering, economics, social sciences). Every student majoring in mathematics at university ought to take a course on probability or mathematical statistics. Probability is now a standard part of high school mathematics, and teachers ought to be well versed and confident in the subject. Problem solving is important in mathematics. This book combines problem solving and probability.

This volume presents 12 papers on a new approach to the analysis of writing systems. For the first time, quantitative methods are introduced into this area of research in a systematic way. The individual contributions give an overview about quantitative properties of symbols and of writing systems, introduce methods of analysis, study individual writing systems as used for different languages, set up an explanatory model of phenomena connected to script development/evolution, and give a perspective to a general theory of writing systems.

This accessible and easy-to-read book provides many examples to illustrate diverse topics in probability and statistics, from initial concepts up to advanced calculations. Special attention is devoted e.g. to independency of events, inequalities in probability and functions of random variables. The book is directed to students of mathematics, statistics, engineering, and other quantitative sciences, in particular to readers who need or want to learn by self-study. The author is convinced that sophisticated examples are more useful for the student than a lengthy formalism treating the greatest possible generality. Contents: Mathematics revision Introduction to probability Finite sample spaces Conditional probability and independence One-dimensional random variables Functions of random variables Bi-dimensional random variables Characteristics of random variables Discrete probability models Continuous probability models Generating functions in probability Sums of many random variables Samples and sampling distributions Estimation of parameters Hypothesis tests

Somebody had to do it. The Chinese speak of deep water wells called "grandfather wells" because they take three generations of diggers to complete. Imagine the thought of such a well being abandoned incomplete by the third generation. What a loss! This book is like a grandfather well except that it has taken only two generations, John Hilliard's and mine, to finish. When I saw his manuscript lying in a heap, I decided that I must spend the time to put it and his notes into a publishable form. Now, it is done. This book is mostly about performing spatial measurements through the statistical sampling of images; it is a text on classical stereology as John Hilliard saw it. His vision of the subject was broad. Consequently, its title is broad too. It presents this subject and some of its modem extensions from the classical perspective of the one of the founders of the field, and my first advisor at Northwestern University, John Hilliard. There is nothing new in this book but much that may have been lost over time. It rediscovers many useful discussions about such subjects as the variances of stereo logical measurements, anisotropy etc. It recovers some of the dialogues between John Hilliard and his students on such topics as fractals and Monte Carlo simulations. It recaptures a little of John Hilliard's unique and subtle wit.
