A century before Kirby Puckett led the Minnesota Twins to World Series championships, Minnesota was home to countless talented African American baseball players, yet few of them are known to fans today. During the many decades that Major League Baseball and its affiliates imposed a strict policy of segregation, black ballplayers in Minnesota were relegated to a haphazard array of semipro leagues, barnstorming clubs, and loose organizations of all-black teams—many of which are lost to history. They Played for the Love of the Game recovers that history by sharing stories of African American ballplayers in Minnesota, from the 1870s to the 1960s, through photos, artifacts, and spoken histories passed through the generations. Author Frank White’s own father was one of the top catchers in the Twin Cities in his day, a fact that White did not learn until late in life. While the stories tell of denial, hardship, and segregation, they are highlighted by athletes who persevered and were united by their love of the sport.

Queensland State of Origin legends are indelibly printed on the minds of rugby league supporters – Lewis, Meninga, Lockyer… They are lauded for their contributions to the greatest game of all and rightfully so. But what about all the great players who played for Queensland before Origin? They are not so easily remembered, but this does not mean their status should be in any way diminished. This book is a tribute to their courage, dedication and spirit – and to their love of the game.

The Love Of The Game written by Mark Chapman and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

BBC sports presenter Mark Chapman is no longer in his physical prime. There is an argument to suggest he has never been in his physical prime. Now in his forties, he is facing a world of knee replacements and ever-expanding waistlines, whilst his children are thriving. There is huge pride that they are doing so well, mixed with a fair amount of jealousy that actually they are better at a wide range of sport than he ever was. He is passionate about sport and it has played a huge part in his life. His parents encouraged him from a very early age and he wants to pass the baton on to his son and daughters. Although there is every chance he might drop it and have a massive strop instead. He is also very aware of the huge changes in sport today compared to when he was growing up; and he is determined that his own attitude to his son and daughters' sport - be it football, netball, cricket or gymnastics - will be exactly the same. And he wants to shine a light on grass roots sports - the incredible and largely unsung contribution that volunteers make in the sporting commnity, without whom - for example - no professional footballer would be in the game today. Funny, touching, passionate about sport and parenthood, Mark Chapman paints sport as a touchstone for everything important: growing up, becoming a parent, enjoying family time, getting old, learning how to win (and how to lose gracefully), the legacy we all hope to leave our children; in short, life and all that goes into it.

It seemed a simple enough idea : take over the running of an amateur football team in West London...Except - hold on a minute - that's not a simple idea at all. And when you throw in a team of ex-convicts, aggressive Turks, bizarre injuries, local tourist attractions, the British weather, Russian mergers, extremely overweight rugby players, Vinnie Jones impressionists and ludicrous amounts of travelling, you quickly arrive at a lot more than you bargained for.

Nancy Bouchier traces the increasing importance of amateur sport to Woodstock and Ingersoll, two small nineteenth-century Ontario towns, revealing its intricate ties to urban boosterism and middle-class culture. Focusing on civic holiday celebrations, the establishment of organized clubs for cricket, baseball, and lacrosse, and the rise of spirited urban sports rivalries, Bouchier shows that small town interest in sports was much more than a pale imitation of the sporting life of Canada's major urban centres.

I Love This Game written by Patrice Evra and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

'Excellent and compellingly honest' Alyson Rudd, The Times In I Love This Game, the long-awaited autobiography of Patrice Evra, the former Manchester United and France star looks back on a remarkable life and career. Having played alongside some of the club's greatest legends, such as Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes, in one of United's most successful eras, Evra has now found a new role as an in-demand pundit and social media star. But, as he reveals in this frank, often shocking, but always compelling memoir, beneath the surface things were not so simple, and he had to fight all the way to get to the top. Initially, it was football that saved him from being sucked into the gang culture of his tough neighbourhood of Les Ulis in the suburbs of Paris. Then, once he achieved his dream of becoming a professional, he had to deal with racism and a notorious dispute with Luis Suarez; he also became a central figure in the infamous ‘strike’ by the France national team in the 2010 World Cup; and there was the moment he launched an attack against a Marseille fan while warming up. ‘I Love This Game’ has become Evra’s catchphrase. Throughout this wonderful book, his passion for his sport shines through and there are revealing and entertaining behind-the-scenes insights about the players and managers he’s worked with, from Sir Alex Ferguson to Paul Pogba, who knows him as Uncle Pat. With infectious enthusiasm and sharp observation, Evra takes the reader where few football autobiographies dare to tread.
