This book is devoted to the continuing research and development of thin-dielectric films for optical and microelectronic applications. Although thermal SiO2 has been the dominant dielectric for thin films in microelectronic applications for many years, there is a growing need for low-dielectric constant materials for interlevel dielectrics (less capacitive cross-talk and reduced delay) and high-dielectric constant materials to minimize the space and maximize the capacitance of storage devices such as DRAMs. With the demands put forth by the microelectronics community, this field is expected to develop significantly in the near future. Also featured is the growing area involving the structure and characteriza-tion of buried a-SiO2 layers formed by O+ ion implantation or the Smart Cut Unibond® process. These techniques are evolving into viable methods for producing commercial silicon-on-insulator substrates for device applications requiring radiation hardness, high-speed and low-power performance, and high-temperature operation.

Interest in the mechanical properties of thin films remains high throughout the world, as evidenced by the large international contingent represented in this book. With regard to stresses, techniques for sorting out residual stress and strain states are becoming more varied and sophisticated. Discussions include Raman scattering, nonlinear acoustic responses and back-scattered electron imaging microscopies, as well as the more standard wafer-bending and X-ray techniques. Spectroscopy, indenting and the burgeoning field of nanoprobe imaging for the characterization of mechanical properties of thin films are also highlighted. Topics include: mechanical properties of films and multilayers; fracture and adhesion; nanoindentation of films and surfaces; mechanical property methods and modelling; tribological properties of thin films; properties of polymer films; stress effects in thin films and interconnects; epitaxy and strain relief mechanisms, measurements.

Layered materials and systems based on metallic, intermetallic, polymeric and ceramic constituents have become increasingly important in meeting the structural requirements of current and future high-performance products. This book brings together investigators from industry, academia and government to focus on the structural applications of layered systems. Thermal barrier coatings, aircraft structural components and wear-resistant coatings for a wide variety of applications are highlighted. Processing techniques such as EB deposition, reactive sputter deposition, sedimentation processing, pressureless cosintering and rapid prototyping via laminated object manufacturing are also covered. And while microstability issues are addressed, they appear to be a critical area where further investigation is required. The largest number of papers focus on the mechanical behavior and modelling of layered systems and reveal significant effects of layer thickness, spacing and constituent properties on the fracture and fatigue behavior of such systems. Topics include: applications; processing; stability issues and mechanical behavior.

Silicon Based Thin Film Solar Cells explains concepts related to technologies for silicon (Si) based photovoltaic applications. Topics in this book focus on ‘new concept’ solar cells. These kinds of cells can make photovoltaic power production an economically viable option in comparison to the bulk crystalline semiconductor technology industry. A transition from bulk crystalline Si solar cells toward thin-film technologies reduces usage of active material and introduces new concepts based on nanotechnologies. Despite its importance, the scientific development and understanding of new solar cells is not very advanced, and educational resources for specialized engineers and scientists are required. This textbook presents the fundamental scientific aspects of Si thin films growth technology, together with a clear understanding of the properties of the material and how this is employed in new generation photovoltaic solar cells. The textbook is a valuable resource for graduate students working on their theses, young researchers and all people approaching problems and fundamental aspects of advanced photovoltaic conversion.
