Drawing lessons for the beginner and the frustrated artist. This drawing guide book could prove helpful if you have low confidence in drawing or if your efforts are less than satisfactory despite repeated attempts at capturing what are seen in front. You might be an absolute beginner or one who has spent a lifetime away from creative activities due to work or family commitments. You might cringe at the idea of picking up a pencil due to a severe inner critic or an affliction that can only be described as picture dyslexia. The first part of this book attempts to decode the underlying causes of this difficulty via a test and questionnaire, to be followed with special drawing exercises from the most basic. The main part of this book does not take the orthodox approach of informing on vanishing points, perspectives and plotting, but merely to help you see what is in front of you. Instead, this book starts at the beginning, to learn the language of line from A, B and C. Within you will find a series of drawing exercises geared towards combating distorted perceptions in drawing by exercising all fields of vision. This includes exercises on visual judgment, symmetrical drawing, abstract drawing, pictures within frames, negative shapes, the weight of marks, upside-down drawing and more. Further chapters explore the realms of tonality, again via the language of shading from A, B and C. Opportunities for progression can be found within the latter chapters exploring specialised shading techniques. A guide on the prescriptive areas of drawing can be found in the final chapter for guidance. This includes a section on plotting your drawing, the artist’s viewfinder, vanishing points and how to draw ellipses. Print book’s dimensions: 8.5x5.5in and 110 pages. With 15,500 words and around 90 images. The author has a PCET qualification in teaching as well as a Degree in Fine Art.

Essential in your toolset... After devouring this book in one sitting, I feel annoyed to have to distill my feelings about it into words, because I can't sketch my review here visually! I have the paperback and conclude it is a SUPERB posession. Why the long thought? Because when you get this book in the box and see how sweetly concise it is, you might at first understand why other readers wonder if it was worth supporting the author with $30 compared to magnum opuses that are stuffed with material. It is, because you can't compare them apples to apples. A lot of how to books are almost like information overload of which you'll only use or remember 10% of. This book should be compared to the thousands charged in design thinking training courses, and, Jose is getting that from companies yet giving you the core of it all in here. If you think different, if you're an innovator, a doer more than a dreamer, you'll understand the indirect value in Sketch Thinking. It's fresh content, delivered in a fresh approach to printed content that walks its own talk of simplicity RULES and so 2016... a fast chunk of golden bite sized learning geared for our ADHD generation. Just like a good design or creative ideation Tool should, it gets your Tuition out of the way quickly so your Intuition can kick in. It leaves you inspired to jump instantly into rapid prototyping and testing the manner it gives you for interacting with others. So... I got a whole lot more retention through practice prompted by a few very key words and drawings. Because it's concise but graphical, I remembered all its basics when I was on the spot today in a meeting with a CEO convincing them about a strategic concept... and using its hero --Starman-- and granma (I LOVE granma!!.. can't get her face out of my head!!) all wowed like I was a visual facilitation guru (I'm not!), which is what made me sit down and write this elaborate glowing review. It's easy to jump back to later. It's a marvelous gift onwards. Also because it's so short yet gripping, if you leave it on your desk like a coffee table book everybody picks it up and steals it, and finishes it, then it starts amazing conversations with them and generates a culture of sketch thinking with your collaborators, which is priceless. That's quite a return on an investment I throw easily over lunch. So for me, and busy people like me, this book is a solid 5/5.

For those that have wanted to draw for a long time but may consider themselves without artistic ability, Drawing for Beginners is an exciting inclusion to the Forgotten Books library. The book starts at the very beginning, with what tools to use, hand positioning, and the best types of paper for drawing, painting and sketching. Author Dorothy Furniss then talks (and sketches) you through the drawing of a leaf. If you follow the simple advice presented, it may in fact be the best leaf you have ever drawn. From the drawing of a leaf, the book takes your through the drawing of small objects, people and their specific body parts, animals, and larger inanimate objects such as buildings and airplanes. The latter chapters tackle some of the more challenging skillsets required by any artist: perspective, measurement, composition, lighting, and shading. With clearly and concisely presented material, there is no doubt that Drawing for Beginners will improve your artistic ability if approached studiously. Of course, there is no one book that will turn a beginner into an expert, and this book is no exception. However, it can be said with confidence that reading this book will give novice artists the mental tools required to become good artists, which is about as much as you can ask for from a book. Author Dorothy Furniss puts it best: "We must think with the brush and the pencil; we must think first and then draw round our 'think.' I hope that this book may help you to arrange your thoughts. It is but a helping hand on the broad highway that leads to the great world of art." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This accessible book explains the significance of relationships between the body and the mark, visual imitation, drawing and writing and visual storytelling, providing a simple guide to these key ideas. For millennia drawing has been conceived as an exploratory activity, mediating between the vision of the drafter and what they are drawing. Drawing reveals hidden relationships, directs attention, scrutinises the material world and provides plans for further action. The book unpacks the key ideas that have shaped the rich, complex and foundational activity of drawing. It presents an unexpected, engaging and authoritative range of illustrated examples of drawings made by culturally and historically diverse people for different purposes, with different media, in widely different times and situations. Educator, author and artist Simon Grennan builds together concepts to create a complete guide to ideas about drawing.
