This volume contains my collected poems 1986-2016. That is the 674 out of some 750 poems I have written in the period 1986 to the present, from age 20 to age 50, that I wish to publish together at this time.Many of these poems were published in my five collections Unlove (1991), 100 Elegies for Modernity (1997), Jesus in Kashmir (2003), Braided Lands (2010) and A Spell, A Charm (2014), but many (over 250) are previously unpublished.

In Open Admissions Danica Savonick traces the largely untold story of the teaching experience of Toni Cade Bambara, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, and Adrienne Rich at the City University of New York (cuny) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This period, during which cuny guaranteed tuition-free admission to every city high school graduate, was one of the most controversial in US educational history. Analyzing their archival teaching materials—syllabi, lesson plans, and assignments—alongside their published work, Savonick reveals how these renowned writers were also transformative educators who developed creative methods of teaching their students to navigate and change the world. In fact, many of their methods—such as student-led courses, collaborative public projects, and the publication of student writing—anticipated the kinds of student-centered and antiracist pedagogies that have become popular in recent years. In addition to recovering the pedagogical legacy of these writers, Savonick shows how teaching in cuny’s free and open classrooms fundamentally altered their writing and, with it, the course of American literature and feminist criticism.

Reading for Life is an anthology of poems and of extracts from prose fiction, related to a series of case-histories of individuals carefully reading, discussing their reading lives, and thinking about the relation of literature to their existence. It enables readers to gain increased imaginative access to the works in question through seeing how they have intensely affected equivalent readers—a novelist, a poet, a doctor, a teacher, an anthologist, but also non-specialists, ordinary people within shared reading groups in many different settings, finding help from literary texts in times of often painful personal need. The church is in deep trouble, maybe in its death throes. Losing touch with the church has meant a break with the Western cultural past, its history, its music, its art, its literature, much of which cannot fully be understood without its religious heritage. But something more important than any of that is in danger of being lost. The church is a deeply imperfect and frustrating organization, but within it, community is experienced, values are nurtured, and God’s presence in the world is embodied in a people. The church carries the story of Jesus; it tells the story of who we are, it calls us to give away our lives to others and to find love as life’s central meaning. We have crossed a cultural divide. Before, if you did not hold traditional religious beliefs and belong to a church you felt obliged to explain yourself. Now the pressure is to explain why you do. This is my answer.
