Finally, a college prep book that actually prepares students for college! Almost all first-year college students discover that college courses are more academically challenging than they expected, and certainly harder than classes in high school. Professors expect students not just to absorb material, but to analyze and synthesize it, consider multiple perspectives, evaluate conflicting evidence, and then apply what they've learned in new contexts. Thinking Critically in College explains how to do all this and more. Louis E. Newman draws on decades of experience as a professor at Carleton College and Dean of Academic Advising and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford, offering the guidance you need to succeed both in college and in life post-graduation. Unique among college prep books, Thinking Critically in College builds on the latest research in learning, spells out the key critical thinking skills you need, shows you how to tackle actual college assignments, and provides exercises throughout to reinforce the lessons. Written in a personal, engaging style, Thinking Critically in College explains how to do the work your professors will require—exactly the preparation you need, no matter what your academic background. Practical, accessible, comprehensive, and interactive, Thinking Critically in College is the definitive guide, not only for those in college or headed there, but for everyone who needs a refresher on thinking clearly.

Transformative Experiences In College written by Neal Christopherson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-24 with Education categories.

Transformative Experiences in College: Connections and Community explores the intersection of two concepts: transformative experience in college and the communities in which students learn. Emerging from a five-year longitudinal interview study tracking a panel of 75 students through four years at a selective liberal arts college, this book provides a rich depiction of how aspects of the college community (and the relationships developed within that community) create opportunities for transformative experiences that lead to personal and academic growth. Neal Christopherson argues that transformative experiences in college are primarily the results of interactions with other people and with a broader campus community, documenting the ways in which relationships with faculty, experiences in courses, interaction with peers, and the general institutional environment can generate these experiences. Christopherson also touches on extracurricular and co-curricular activities, the importance of a healthy environment for interacting with difference, and how students transition out of the institution. Scholars of education, sociology, and communication will find this book particularly useful.

This report presents the primary papers given at a 1992 workshop to identify specific higher order thinking and communication skills and to develop appropriate indicators of collegiate outcomes as suggested by Goal 5.5 of the National Education Goals formulated in 1990. This goal addressed improvement in college graduates' ability to "think critically, communicate effectively, and solve problems." Part 1 presents the five papers upon which the working groups built their discussions. These papers are: (1) "Skills for Citizenship" (Suzanne W. Morse); (2) "A National Assessment of Critical Thinking Skills in Adults: Taking Steps Toward the Goal" (Diane F. Halpern); (3) "Assessing Thinking: A Framework for Measuring Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills at the College Level" (David Perkins et al.); (4) "Assessing Speaking and Listening: Preliminary Considerations for a National Assessment" (John A. Daly); and (5) "No Guru, No Method, No Teacher: The Communication Domain and the NACSL (National Assessment of College Student Learning)" by Stephen P. Witte. Part 2 includes group summary reports, reviewers' comments, a listing of speaking and listening skills, and additional information on an ongoing Delphi study at Pennsylvania State University. Part 3 presents comments by participants on the conference products and results of a survey of all participants. Consensus on "next steps" included recommending further development of the taxonomy of skills, abilities, and competencies. (The five papers contain references.) (DB)

Infusing Critical Thinking Into Your Course written by Linda B. Nilson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-03 with Education categories.

Critical thinking—every scholar in the literature has defined it, but there is no clearly agreed upon definition. No wonder polls and surveys reveal that few college-level faculty can define critical thinking or know how to teach it. Still, critical thinking keeps appearing in accreditation standards and surveys of the skills employers seek in college graduates. The good news is that we do know that critical thinking can be taught. But the concept cries out for the simplification, translation into discipline-relevant course outcomes, tangible teaching strategies, and concrete assessment techniques that this book will provide.Like a course or a workshop, this book proposes learning outcomes for the reader—promises of what the reader will be able to do after reading it. These include:• explain what critical thinking is in simple terms;• convincingly explain to students why it is important for them to learn critical thinking, and, if they tune out, what they stand to lose;• overcome the challenges that teaching critical thinking presents;• identify the type of course content to which critical thinking can be applied and, therefore, that readers can use to teach critical thinking;• integrate critical thinking into the design of a new or existing course in any discipline;• write assessable critical thinking learning outcomes that are compatible with and make sense in any discipline;• select and adapt activities and assignments that will give students no- or low-stakes practice with feedback in critical thinking using a variety of questions, tasks, and teaching methods.

The Craft Of College Teaching written by Robert DiYanni and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-03 with Education categories.

"Robert DiYanni and Anton Borst's Classroom Confidential provides a clear, compact guide to the basics of college teaching. Grounded in the authors' classroom experience, their pedagogical coaching at NYU's Center for the Advancement of Teaching, and their examination of the latest learning science research, it explains how to teach in the college classroom from a learner's perspective-what methods, principles, and activities achieve the best learning outcomes. Chapters address major topics from course and syllabus design to discussion-based teaching, critical reading, and assessment, while brief "interludes" cover various pedagogical elements and applications-including what to do on the first and last days of class and how to incorporate service and experiential learning into curricula. Throughout, the authors provide practical suggestions and strategies, while explaining the underlying pedagogical principles. They also address recent topics that promise to remain fixtures of the educational landscape, such as teaching with technology and teaching in a global context. They steer a middle course on technology, suggesting ways to maximize its benefits while minimizing its distractions. The book coheres around a philosophy of active learning and student engagement. DiYanni and Borst argue that teaching practices should challenge students to think and learn, requiring them to do things with newly acquired knowledge-create models, conduct experiments, debate issues, and more. The authors enlist reliable scholarly research to demonstrate that active learning, of the kind they advocate, achieves results: students learn more and better, and their learning is deeper and longer lasting. The authors' pedagogy echoes their epistemology, as they demonstrate how learning and teaching are inextricably intertwined, organic rather than mechanical activities"--
