Since Freud's earliest psychoanalytic theorization around the beginning of the twentieth century, the concept of the unconscious has exerted an enormous influence upon psychoanalysis and psychology, and literary, critical and social theory. Yet, prior to Freud, the concept of the unconscious already possessed a complex genealogy in nineteenth-century German philosophy and literature, beginning with the aftermath of Kant's critical philosophy and the origins of German idealism, and extending into the discourses of romanticism and beyond. Despite the many key thinkers who contributed to the Germanic discourses on the unconscious, the English-speaking world remains comparatively unaware of this heritage and its influence upon the origins of psychoanalysis. Bringing together a collection of experts in the fields of German Studies, Continental Philosophy, the History and Philosophy of Science, and the History of Psychoanalysis, this volume examines the various theorizations, representations, and transformations undergone by the concept of the unconscious in nineteenth-century German thought.

Description The 1990s were presidentially proclaimed the decade of the brain. Owing in large part to the work on the neuroscience and clinical applications from that initiative, we are now on the verge of breakthroughs in learning how the subconscious mind affects the decisions we’re continually making. For instance, your unconscious mind has already made the decision whether to buy this book, but you probably don’t know that yet. First you got a feeling, an intuitive nudge supplied from the unconscious mind. Next, the conscious mind defends or disagrees with that emotion. Your final decision may not be as completely straightforward as you would like to believe. I’m sure this introduction to the world of your mind, as a product of, yet distinct from, your brain, has a few surprises in store for you. Whether you think of yourself as more of a rational person or someone who tends to go more with your feelings and intuition, you’ll find these two ways of thinking intertwined in a rich fabric made for your enjoyment. Blue Ink Review Gates divides our decision-making processes into two systems: System 1 is intuitive, unconscious, fast acting and effortless. System 2 is rational, conscious, deliberate, slower than System 1, and susceptible to fatigue. While many people think that their decisions are based on the discursive, rational System 2, in fact the intuitive System 1 is often in control – and in ways that are elusive. Gates explores not only the particular heuristics that tend to fool us but also why it is so hard to change them. Full of anecdotes and snippets from revealing psychological experiments, Gates’s work is no dry philosophical tome. It is written in a popular style and will be accessible to a wide audience. Readers of Malcolm Gladwell’s work, especially his popular book Blink, are likely to find Gates’s work a breezy, thought-provoking read. Foreword Review This accessible book is for those who are intrigued by the human mind and want to know why they, and others, do what they do. What Was I Thinking? The Subconscious in Decision-Making by Chris Gates brings the insight and mystery of brain science and psychology to the masses. While decision making is a skill that people can develop and articulate over time, most people experience mystifying moments when they ask the question in the title. Gates tackles the mystery with facts, compiling research that explores how people make decisions, why the mind prioritizes the inputs it does, and to what extent the mind adapts to new information. This book will appeal to other first-person researchers who are intrigued by the human mind and want to know why they, and others, do what they do. Anyone fascinated by the innovations in brain science and understanding will find Gates’s devotion to detail compelling. The back matter is uncommonly useful. The glossary presents in-depth, thoroughly explained definitions for people new to the material. The appendixes offer interesting, almost brainteaser-like studies of the mind. What Was I Thinking? asks and explores the answer to the question that haunts ordinary thinkers. Kirkus A thoroughly researched, pop-culture–laden exploration of how people make choices. A surprisingly poignant, intellectually rigorous study of how our thought processes shape our lives.

Freud's discovery of the dynamic unconscious is arguably his most important contribution to our understanding of the human mind. While others before him had realised that not all mental activity is conscious, it was Freud's aim to study in detail both the content and the alien mode of thinking of the unconscious mind. Dreams burst upon us, playing enigmatically upon our inner theatre, dense with obscure meaning. Freud showed the continuity between dreams, puzzling neurotic and psychotic symptoms, slips of the tongue and a multitude of errors which reveal the existence of the unconscious mind. The author explains that while we may have illusions of autonomy and conscious awareness of our motivations, psychoanalysis reveals that we are often "lived by" the unconscious which dwells within, largely hidden during daylight, but revealing its controlling influence within the dramas of sleep. Immensely creative yet powerfully destructive, the unconscious can be a source of guidance as well as subversion evoking both awe and dread.

Weaving together state-of-the-art research, theory, and clinical insights, this book provides a new understanding of the unconscious and its centrality in human functioning. The authors review heuristics, implicit memory, implicit learning, attribution theory, implicit motivation, automaticity, affective versus cognitive salience, embodied cognition, and clinical theories of unconscious functioning. They integrate this work with cognitive neuroscience views of the mind to create an empirically supported model of the unconscious. Arguing that widely used psychotherapies--including both psychodynamic and cognitive approaches--have not kept pace with current science, the book identifies promising directions for clinical practice. Winner--American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize (Theory)

Dr. John Bargh, the world’s leading expert on the unconscious mind, presents a “brilliant and convincing book” (Malcolm Gladwell) cited as an outstanding read of 2017 by Business Insider and The Financial Times—giving us an entirely new understanding of the hidden mental processes that secretly govern every aspect of our behavior. For more than three decades, Dr. John Bargh has conducted revolutionary research into the unconscious mind, research featured in bestsellers like Blink and Thinking Fast and Slow. Now, in what Dr. John Gottman said was “the most important and exciting book in psychology that has been written in the past twenty years,” Dr. Bargh takes us on an entertaining and enlightening tour of the forces that affect everyday behavior while transforming our understanding of ourselves in profound ways. Dr. Bargh takes us into his labs at New York University and Yale—where he and his colleagues have discovered how the unconscious guides our behavior, goals, and motivations in areas like race relations, parenting, business, consumer behavior, and addiction. With infectious enthusiasm he reveals what science now knows about the pervasive influence of the unconscious mind in who we choose to date or vote for, what we buy, where we live, how we perform on tests and in job interviews, and much more. Because the unconscious works in ways we are completely unaware of, Before You Know It is full of surprising and entertaining revelations as well as useful tricks to help you remember items on your to-do list, to shop smarter, and to sleep better. Before You Know It is “a fascinating compendium of landmark social-psychology research” (Publishers Weekly) and an introduction to a fabulous world that exists below the surface of your awareness and yet is the key to knowing yourself and unlocking new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

Your life is dominated by your unconscious mind: by thoughts you're unaware of and movements you don't realise you are making. Words, colours, mannerisms and other cues you don't realise are affecting you, change what you think. The confidence you have in your ability to reason and to consciously choose what to do is caused by a series of illusions that scientists are only just beginning to understand. The discovery of these illusions will change the way we see ourselves more than the discoveries of Darwin and Copernicus. Unthink explores the unconscious decisions we make, and covers a variety of topics, ranging from how we choose politicians and romantic partners to more abstract subjects such as whether we can consciously decide to move our fingers. The counter-intuitive observations that Chris makes in the book include: · If you want someone to fancy you, wear red and meet them somewhere frightening. · When waitresses repeat customers' orders back to them instead of just saying 'yes' they receive bigger tips. · To reduce your shopping bill, start at the beer and snacks end of the store and work backwards. · If you sit someone in an upright chair when you give them good news they will be prouder of their achievements. · Having a picture of your family on your desk might make you work harder, but you'll be rattier when you get home! Chris Paley shows us how we can understand ourselves and others better, by having a greater understanding of the way that the unconscious mind has an impact of the way we live our lives.

The power of the subconscious is way beyond positive thinking... It is believing. The reason why it can bring you to success is that the subconscious part of the brain can enable you to aspire, believe that aspiration, and eventually allowing your "believing" makes your aspiration come true. To give you better understanding regarding this matter, Read along. Your subconscious mind, if you would only allow it, can bring you great riches, abundant happiness or just about anything you can imagine and that's a fact. The reason for this is that your subconscious is essentially the "inner you" and it never sleeps, for if it did sleep your body would cease to function and die. Your subconscious not only regulates your breathing but keeps every organ in your body functioning and doing its job to keep you alive. As well as that, your subconscious is also responsible for habitual behaviors and learned skills. The key to controlling the subconscious mind is in knowing that before any skill or habit is accepted by it, they must first pass through the conscious mind. Habits and skills as well as fears and many other thoughts are submitted to the subconscious mind through constant repetition and emotional content, which is attached to the thought. Babies learn in this manner, as they are growing up they attempt to master new skills and fail perhaps hundreds of times before they finally learn and the skill becomes second nature to them. Due to the repetition, the subconscious mind is able to take over and from that point on we say the skill has become "second nature" to us. We are just learning to use the powers of the subconscious mind. We are just beginning to understand and use it. We are on the brink of further and fuller developments. But what we already know we must use in order to come to greater things. This book gives detailed understanding about subconscious mind, Power of and ways to make use of it to be successful.
