What does a consul do when a couple arrives at the consulate dressed in their bathing suits asking for help? What to do with a rapidly decomposing corpse in the outback of tropical Papua New Guinea? How do the financial donations bound for Africa end up on the private accounts of the ruling elites and arms dealers? This book is a frankly-written collection of anecdotes from his thirty years in the Swiss foreign service.

This book was written as: (1) the perfect short read while waiting in airports; (2) the ideal bedside companion; and (3) a delightful gift book. Why? (1) The pithy tales are short, humorous, and insightful; (2) each chapter is all-inclusive - you can start and stop anywhere; and (3) there is nothing nasty, embarrassing, or sexy in it. Thus, Dr. Rawson, a psychology professor extraordinaire, introduces us to this charming collection of travel tales. Covering a time span of 35 years, the author takes us on a fascinating view of some of the worlds most exotic locations: the wilds of the Amazonian jungles, the clove plantations of Zanzibar, the pandemic of AIDS in western Africa, the old slave factories of Goree Island off the coast of Senegal, crossing the Andes by train, chewing qat in Yemen, and chatting with haratines in the worlds most secluded country, Mauritania. But more mundane travel experiences are not neglected. Taking your kids to California by car, traveling on Amtrak, living in the Deep South, and even an account of the authors first real trip, a hilarious venture with his parents to California in a 55 Plymouth, are all included. Arranged chronologically, the book takes us step-by-step to ever more venturesome trips. Starting with the first venture outside the United States, the author covers his initial trip to England where he ends up being unable to understand the language, subsisting on Cadbury chocolate bars, and touring Scotland with a busload of Englishmen. From this humble beginning, the reader is transported to the Holy Land, where his brother declares war on the Baptists in his travel group, to the delightful account of surviving taking his two teenager sons to California on a one-month car trip, and later, taking those same teenagers to Morocco to knock the provincialism out of them. Usually traveling with his sardonic but delightful wife, his beguiling, but intolerant, brother, his curious sons, or with groups of bumbling college professors, the author consistently manages to capture not only the unique character of the country visited, but the charm and wisdom of its people. Most importantly, the author consistently makes clear that traveling is a lot of fun and humor is a worldwide commodity easily exchanged. Whether its a green-eyed half-breed Greenlander complaining about the weather, an Inca descendent racing a tired old school bus in Peru, a Japanese bride planning her wedding in Prince Edward Island, or a black football player struggling through Mississippi State, Dr. Rawson finds humor, caring, and compassion among all. Youll love this witty, insightful, and certainly upbeat book!

"As England's Industrial Revolution started the process of urbanization that has since characterized development throughout the world, a poet worried about the ""dark satanic mills"" that were such a fundamental part of this revolution. However, despite his misgivings, he also suggested that it was necessary for societies to arm themselves with ""chariots of fire"" and other weapons so that they could master this process. In a somewhat more prosaic poetic vein World Bank President Robert McNamara launched the bank's shelter assistance programs saying that 'If cities do not begin to deal more constructively with poverty, poverty may begin to deal more destructively with cities.' These concerns would appear to have even more resonance today as the population of cities in developing countries increasing by unprecedented levels of more than 1 billion people per year for the next 15 years. This magnitude suggests the scale of the increase in the investment in shelter needed to meet the needs of this growing population."

Until they were expelled from power thirty years ago, in early 1986, the late dictator Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos (she, the Shoe Queen) jointly ruled the Philippines with impunity for 20+ years. They were an efficient cash-and-carry team—while he raided the national till, she shopped 'til she dropped. In the words of the US congressman investigating them, "Compared to her (Imelda), Marie Antoinette was a bag lady," . . . while Ferdinand made master embezzler Bernie Madoff look like a rank amateur. With the passing of 30 years, this book becomes a full accounting of the rapacious and avaricious rule the pair enjoyed—how they hoodwinked an unsuspecting people, and the truth behind many of the dirty tricks they employed revealed at last. The present is an opportune time to take stock, especially as their only son and heir, Ferdinand, Jr., and others of his ilk, launches a comeback attempt for national office in this year's Philippine elections, and trying to re-fabricate history in the process. This book will set the record straight.

The first Christians turned the world upside down in the space of a generation. How can we learn from them today? In this book Michael Green opens up the gripping story of Acts, highlighting the volcanic eruption of faith described there and contrasting it with the often halfhearted Christianity of the modern Western world. Green explores the life and faith of the Christians of Acts, answering such questions as, What kind of people were they? How did they live? And how did they organize and practice as members of the new church? Besides describing life in the early church, Green discusses how we today can apply the first Christians’ dynamic efforts at church planting, pastoral care, social concern, gospel proclamation, and prayer. Combining trusted scholarship with a popular, enjoyable writing style, Thirty Years That Changed the World is an ideal book for church, group, or personal study.

The survival of NATO as a viable alliance is currently challenged by a shift in the strategic balance of power, as well as by global events and contingencies that extend far beyond NATO's boundaries. In the face of these challenges, existing institutional mechanisms are proving inadequate to respond effectively. The distinguished contributors to this volume draw on their vast political and diplomatic experience to identify and analyze the problems confronting NATO for the remainder of the twentieth century. They make clear the need for a trans-Atlantic communication network among policymakers, scholars, and others-a network that will allow an ongoing process of analysis and assessment of NATO's strategic, economic, and political problems, along with the identification of appropriate reactions.
