When writing this book the author had two objects prominently in mind. First of all, to make a faithful collection of all essential facts pertaining to the history of San Diego, from the day of its discovery by Europeans down to the time in which the author was living. In the second place, to save from oblivion the rich traditions which cluster about the life of Old San Diego, a place which has all but perished from the earth, yet which should ever possess an absorbing interest not only for those who dwell about the shores of San Diego Bay, but for all students of American history. One will hardly find another book on the history of San Diego that will prove more valuable, informative and entertaining than this volume.

Faces of San Diego collected thousands of old photographs from families living in the greater San Diego area. This book is but a sampling of some of the best family history photographs originally displayed in exhibitions at San Diego Mesa College, at the East County and South Bay divisions of the San Diego Superior Court, and at the San Diego Historical Society. Many of the photographs were also published in the San Diego Union-Tribune or broadcast on UCSD-TV. Collectively, they represent a compelling visual and historical argument for the relevance of everyone's past. Though seemingly mute, these photographs speak volumes about personal and family history and the faces that have pushed or pulled their relatives to present-day San Diego. They are cameos of the city's past, present, and future.

San Diego today is a vibrant and bustling coastal city, but it wasn't always so. The city's transformation from a rough-hewn border town and frontier port to a vital military center was marked by growing pains and political clashes. Civic highs and criminal lows have defined San Diego's rise through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries into a preeminent Sun Belt city. Historian Richard W. Crawford recalls the significant events and one-of-a-kind characters like benefactor Frank "Booze" Beyer, baseball hero Albert Spalding and novelist Scott O'Dell. Join Crawford for a collection that recounts how San Diego yesterday laid the foundation for the city's bright future.

This is a meat-and-potatoes reference work, garnished only with a brief preface, a one-page bibliography, and an index. The text is organized by day of the month, listing in chronological order events that occurred in American history. This logical layout will make the book easy to use for librarians and patrons alike. Entries are written in a telegraphic, curt style that in some cases may require clarification. The 70-page index is useful but flawed, lacking comprehensiveness and containing some incorrect citations. The Encyclopedia of American Facts & Dates (HarperCollins, 1987. 8th ed.), while less current, is more thorough and better indexed, for less money. Recommended, with reservations, as a secondary source for public and school libraries.-- James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich. - Library Journal.

The Plan De San Diego written by Charles H. Harris and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-01 with History categories.

The Plan of San Diego, a rebellion proposed in 1915 to overthrow the U.S. government in the Southwest and establish a Hispanic republic in its stead, remains one of the most tantalizing documents of the Mexican Revolution. The plan called for an insurrection of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and African Americans in support of the Mexican Revolution and the waging of a genocidal war against Anglos. The resulting violence approached a race war and has usually been portrayed as a Hispanic struggle for liberation brutally crushed by the Texas Rangers, among others. The Plan de San Diego: Tejano Rebellion, Mexican Intrigue, based on newly available archival documents, is a revisionist interpretation focusing on both south Texas and Mexico. Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler argue convincingly that the insurrection in Texas was made possible by support from Mexico when it suited the regime of President Venustiano Carranza, who co-opted and manipulated the plan and its supporters for his own political and diplomatic purposes in support of the Mexican Revolution. The study examines the papers of Augustine Garza, a leading promoter of the plan, as well as recently released and hitherto unexamined archival material from the Federal Bureau of Investigation documenting the day-to-day events of the conflict.
