News headlines in today's American media are dominated by stories of China's rising economic growth and ambitions toward global power. Few Americans, however, have insight or in-depth understanding of everyday Chinese culture and traditions. After seven years working and living in China as a visiting professor at a top university in the Fujian province, Stephen Ling shares his unique experience of what it's like to be fully immersed in the country of his ancestors. Chinese students are advancing in science and math, but how does this compare to America's educational system? In the aftermath of female infanticide, how is the country dealing with a shortage of women and the troublesome age gap between younger and older generations? President Xi Jinping passed anticorruption laws to encourage the Chinese government to support the people, working toward the "China Dream" of economic prosperity. But why is talking politics too "sensitive" an issue in schools and discouraged among students? As a Chinese American, Ling's distinct observations in This Is China pull back the curtain and expose modern China's social, cultural, and political climate to inquiring Americans. Discover how China is evolving and why it may just be the next global superpower.

What Is China written by Ge Zhaoguang and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-26 with History categories.

Ge Zhaoguang, an eminent historian of traditional China and a public intellectual, takes on fundamental questions that shape the domestic and international politics of the world’s most populous country and its second largest economy. What Is China? offers an insider’s account that addresses sensitive problems of Chinese identity and shows how modern scholarship about China—whether conducted in China, East Asia, or the West—has attempted to make sense of the country’s shifting territorial boundaries and its diversity of ethnic groups and cultures. Ge considers, for example, the ancient concept of tianxia, or All-Under-Heaven, which assigned supremacy to the imperial court and lesser status to officials, citizens, tributary states, and tribal peoples. Does China’s government still operate with a belief in divine rule of All-Under-Heaven, or has it taken a different view of other actors, inside and outside its current borders? Responding both to Western theories of the nation-state and to Chinese intellectuals eager to promote “national learning,” Ge offers an insightful and erudite account of how China sees its place in the world. As he wrestles with complex historical and cultural forces guiding the inner workings of an often misunderstood nation, Ge also teases out many nuances of China’s encounter with the contemporary world, using China’s past to explain aspects of its present and to provide insight into various paths the nation might follow as the twenty-first century unfolds.

China has become the world's second biggest economy and its largest exporter. It possesses the world's largest foreign exchange reserves and has 29 companies in the FT 500 list of the world's largest companies. ‘China's Rise' preoccupies the global media, which regularly carry articles suggesting that it is using its financial resources to ‘buy the world'. Is there any truth to this idea? Or is this just scaremongering by Western commentators who have little interest in a balanced presentation of China's role in the global political economy? In this short book Peter Nolan - one of the leading international experts on China and the global economy - probes behind the media rhetoric and shows that the idea that China is buying the world is a myth. Since the 1970s the global business revolution has resulted in an unprecedented degree of industrial concentration. Giant firms from high income countries with leading technologies and brands have greatly increased their investments in developing countries, with China at the forefront. Multinational companies account for over two-thirds of China's high technology output and over ninety percent of its high technology exports. Global firms are deep inside the Chinese business system and are pressing China hard to be permitted to increase their presence without restraints. By contrast, Chinese firms have a negligible presence in the high-income countries - in other words, we are ‘inside them' but they are not yet ‘inside us'. China's 70-odd ‘national champion' firms are protected by the government through state ownership and other support measures. They are in industries such as banking, metals, mining, oil, power, construction, transport, and telecommunications, which tend to make use of high technology products rather than produce these products themselves. Their growth has been based on the rapidly growing home market. China has been unsuccessful so far in its efforts to nurture a group of globally competitive firms with leading global technologies and brands. Whether it will be successful in the future is an open question. This balanced analysis replaces rhetoric with evidence and argument. It provides a much-needed perspective on current debates about China's growing power and it will contribute to a constructive dialogue between China and the West.

One of the U.S. government's leading China experts reveals the hidden strategy fueling that country's rise – and how Americans have been seduced into helping China overtake us as the world's leading superpower. For more than forty years, the United States has played an indispensable role helping the Chinese government build a booming economy, develop its scientific and military capabilities, and take its place on the world stage, in the belief that China's rise will bring us cooperation, diplomacy, and free trade. But what if the "China Dream" is to replace us, just as America replaced the British Empire, without firing a shot? Based on interviews with Chinese defectors and newly declassified, previously undisclosed national security documents, The Hundred-Year Marathon reveals China's secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world's dominant power, and to do so by 2049, the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. Michael Pillsbury, a fluent Mandarin speaker who has served in senior national security positions in the U.S. government since the days of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on his decades of contact with the "hawks" in China's military and intelligence agencies and translates their documents, speeches, and books to show how the teachings of traditional Chinese statecraft underpin their actions. He offers an inside look at how the Chinese really view America and its leaders – as barbarians who will be the architects of their own demise. Pillsbury also explains how the U.S. government has helped – sometimes unwittingly and sometimes deliberately – to make this "China Dream" come true, and he calls for the United States to implement a new, more competitive strategy toward China as it really is, and not as we might wish it to be. The Hundred-Year Marathon is a wake-up call as we face the greatest national security challenge of the twenty-first century.

This is China .a familiar expression among expatriates in Shenzhen. These words are the only way for many to excuse unseemly sights, smells, and experiences. Rather than seeking an explanation for much of what is witnessed, people utter: T.I.C. (This is China). Somehow, this simple acronym excuses whatever is seen, smelled, tasted, and encountered. Frustration dissolves, and life continues with a smirk (Excuse me. I meant, with a smile.). The following stories are tangible, real experiences that have happened to us, our friends, and citizens of China. If seeking a book that details tourist attractions and luxury accommodations, there are others on the shelf from which to choose. If seeking the alleyways and remote streets of China, a culture truly unknown to most of the world, this book will bring more than reality to your fingertips. It will bring thought-provoking images and pose questions that inspire personal, soul-searching responses.
