This is Dementia: Disrupting the Decline seeks to dispel the myths surrounding dementia. It invites you to take a journey to explore the misconceptions, stereotypes, and various perspectives surrounding this devastating disorder. This journey is an interactive one that requires you to engage. It asks you to bring, and challenge, your own perspectives and understandings of what dementia is. The reality is that dementia in and of itself is not a disease. At its core, dementia is accelerated aging of the brain. In other words, the brain is on a faster trajectory toward death when compared to the body. This understanding of dementia is important as it opens the possibility of disrupting, even preventing, this trajectory. This is Dementia offers crucial insights into how dementia impacts our brains and its ability to function. It provides information on the early often imperceptible changes, referred to as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), that can begin as early as 30 or 40 years old. It dispels the myths that dementia is an inevitable part of aging and that it is not treatable. It offers five steps -- Awareness, Acceptance, Action, Allowance, and Attitude -- to guide your understanding of dementia and prepare you for your own diagnosis or that of someone close to us. Regardless of if you or a loved one have been diagnosed with dementia or not, This is Dementia provides a road map to empower you to slow, maybe even stop, the seemingly relentless march of this debilitating, "take-everything-from-you" disorder.

How to Navigate the Minefield That Is Dementia with Your Loved One: A Guide Born of Experience is a book that I felt called to write. As a physician and one well versed in geriatrics, I thought I knew how to navigate the system to get dementia care for my husband. I was very wrong. Dementia is a worldwide epidemic. At the moment, there is no cure. Our understanding of the disease process is incomplete and appears multifactorial. Everyone knows or loves someone who has been afflicted with it. The very thought of dementia is met with fear and avoidance. Little information is available to the lay public. This book is written for a lay audience. In my view, knowledge is power, and my goal is to empower the general public with basic knowledge of the disease and what steps can be taken to deal with it with confidence. It is written in three parts. Part 1 is a memoir designed to introduce you to Ollie, and I and tell the story of what we experienced in our journey both before and during the dementia years. Part 2 is a scientific literature review, written in lay terms, describing the most common types of dementia and the most up-to-date information on diagnosis, cause, prevention, and treatment. References are provided mostly from 2018 through 2020. The third part is designed to help the caregiver understand where and how to get help for loved ones without destroying themselves both physically and financially. This is a book that will help you if you are already caring for a dementia patient. It may help you even more if you are not yet in that situation, because you will need this information along the way in your life journey.

As life expectancy increases in India, the number of people living with dementia will also rise. Yet little is known about how people in India cope with dementia, how relationships and identities change through illness and loss. In addressing this question, this book offers a rich ethnographic account of how middle-class families in urban India care for their relatives with dementia. From the husband who wakes up at 3 am to feed his wife ice-cream to the daughters who gave up employment for seven years to care for their mother with dementia, this book illuminates the local idioms on dementia and aging, the personal experience of care-giving, the functioning of stigma in daily life, and the social and cultural barriers in accessing support.

Written to encourage defensive action, Levine's book is meant both as a guide and a reference to understanding and preventing dementia. It is intended for lay people interested in learning about dementia and the measures that can be taken to repel its onslaught, as well as for caregivers and family members of impaired patients. Defying Dementia is presented in two sections. First, Levine explains the various types of dementia, its increasing incidence and current treatments, and the treatments being tested and on the horizon. The role of physiology and fresh insights from the field of genetics are included. The second section focuses on methods that can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle to help avoid dementia. How do we motivate individuals to take action or change behavior in response to a possible threat that has not yet materialized? When the threat is dementia, argues longtime neurologist Robert Levine, it is an issue of considerable importance. The earlier the campaign is initiated to defeat this lurking foe, the greater the chances the combatant will emerge victorious. Written to encourage such defensive action, Levine's book is meant both as a guide and a reference to understanding and preventing dementia. It is intended for lay people interested in learning about dementia and the measures that can be taken to repel its onslaught, as well as for caregivers and family members of impaired patients. Defying Dementia is presented in two sections. The role of physiology and fresh insights from the field of genetics are included. The second section focuses on methods that can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle to help avoid dementia. Vignettes illustrate how dementia in its many forms can be recognized as it emerges. With proper actions on our part, we can achieve mastery, Levine writes. The transformation may not be easy, but recognizing the scourge that dementia is, and the way it devours the humanity of its victims, may inspire us to move ahead. Preparation is the key word; building solid defenses over time. And while any moment is worthwhile to begin this task, the earlier the better.

The title was chosen as a benefit to everyone. This is a disease which impacts the world and humanity in general. Research will continue from generation to generation until a cure is found and beyond. Everyone living on this planet earth is affected by this disease. Climate change is a major issue, but we don't know if it has an effect on dementia. Lately, the proliferation of mental illnesses became the number one silent killer. One's way of life can make a significant difference between being at risk or not. The bottom line is to follow your genetic background. The political unrest around the world, in the Middle East as an example, and the tsunami of refugees across the globe created a climate of depression, which later on can change to dementia and other diseases. This is one of the many reasons why A Worldwide Concern is the correct title for this book. Experiencing too many disasters will definitely affect the brain. Some people never get over their loss. Our brain is more affected than ever and not too many of us are aware of that. The age of accelerated technology make it harder for anyone to press the shut-off button. If we are serious about saving the planet, we have to be serious about dementia. Throughout my research, I discovered that a lot of families are not equipped to deal with dementia. Those who have experienced the disease in their family are now worried about the future if there is no cure found. Right now, the best medicine is to preserve the area of the brain which is not yet affected. The big question is when do we start? This remains an individual challenge. Taking an IQ test yearly can help in the evaluation. This book is a collection of events over a two-year study. The idea was to write a small book with sufficient information, and get others to relate to the story and participate. To achieve that, I developed eleven questions which I used to conduct the study. I think there is no greater motivation and awareness than the ones coming from those who have experienced the disease in their family. The intent is to help others to improve their lives. For every book that is sold, one dollar is donated to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

The conceptualization of dementia has changed dramatically in recent years with the claim that, through early detection and by controlling several risk factors, a prevention of dementia is possible. Although encouraging and providing hope against this feared condition, this claim is open to scrutiny. This volume looks at how this new conceptualization ignores many of the factors which influence a dementia sufferers’ prognosis, including their history with education, food and exercise as well as their living in different epistemic cultures. The central aim is to question the concept of prevention and analyze its impact on aging people and aging societies.

Thorough and compassionate information about dementia and Alzheimer's for caregivers and people with early dementia. As the population continues to age, so too the numbers of people with dementia and Alzheimer's grow. Inevitably, it will affect everyone in some way . . . as sufferers, or as carers, or as part of the wide circle of family, friends, professional and voluntary workers needed to support the main caregiver. The effects of dementia spread far into the community. Based on Dr Chris Perkins' acclaimed book The New Zealand Dementia Guide, first published in 2004, this is a completely revised and updated edition. This comprehensive book has been written to give people the information they need to understand and come to terms with this illness, and cope with the changes that occur as the disease takes its course. It explains what dementia is, the different forms it takes, how and where to get help, diagnostic tests, treatment and medication, and the services available. It examines the issues involved in both caring for a sufferer at home, and when the time comes to choose residential care. It is difficult for carers to achieve the right balance of reality and hope. Dementia can be a grim condition, which progressively deprives people of the attributes they value. But in this book, old-age psychiatry specialist Dr Chris Perkins aims to help caregivers at all levels deal with it with acceptance and compassion, offering humane and respectful care to people with dementia.

This is Volume XII of nineteen in a collection of Abnormal and Clinical Psychology. Originally published in 1925, this research stemmed from many discussions about the applicability of psychoanalytic principles to manic-depressive insanity, whether the symptoms could be traced to unconscious mental processes in the same way as Jung had demonstrated it to be possible in dementia praecox and ended up with the general objective moving from that of psychopathological to one of psychological conclusions .
