Many murders have occurred in the remote region of the Pilbara in Australia's North-West. This novel follows one of them. Thomas Darlington's life began in the coal mining city of Newcastle Upon Tyne in faraway England. Escaping his humble beginnings and wanting to forge a different life for himself; he travelled the World aboard ships. A chance meeting with his unofficial mentor saw his destiny being mapped-out for the rest of his life in a copper mine at Whim Creek. Wanting to improve the lot of his fellow miners, Thomas organised the Union to come to the mine. That led to a strike and the shipping-in of scab workers by the Company. Destiny had taken Thomas to this inhospitable part of the World; and it is Destiny which sees him still there to-day, more than a century after his death. It is said that Thomas' ghost visits the Whim Creek Hotel from time to time calling for justice to be dealt-out to the murderer. The story does not stop there because Thomas' was not the only life to be touched by Destiny. Others too would suffer and die before the tale comes to its timely end.

'A thought-provoking book, bringing readers outside their comfort zones. It challenges us to think beyond the typical macro and microeconomic …' [Read Full Review]A TanFT readers' best 2021 summer booksThroughout the history of mankind, the rise of societies, whether civilizations, nations, or communities, has been a story of human achievement. From the rise of the Akkadian empire in ancient Mesopotamia to the re-emergence of modern China, people constitute the basic denominator upon which societies build their success. The way people around the world think and behave is guided by a complex system of values. These values constitute key factors in the way economies are structured and their potential for further growth. To a large extent, they explain why Japan has gone through multiple lost decades; why Nordic countries accept the highest tax rates in the world, making their societies much more equal; why China has such a large trade surplus with the United States; or why some nations become stuck in a middle-income trap. It is these values, coupled with the right policies, that ultimately determine the destiny of nations. In this book, we explore how the combination of human values and policies affects national economic outcomes. We focus on certain key values conducive to growth: are people of a given nation, on average, hardworking, thrifty? Do they trust each other? Are they risk-takers? The harder people work, the higher the growth potential. Different savings patterns determine, to a large extent, whether a country will grow through investments and exports or consumption, and have generated large global imbalances over time. Trust goes a long way in explaining wealth and income inequalities and the role that governments can play in minimizing those inequalities. Economies with highly risk-averse citizens will stall. We also identify policies which have the greatest impact on economies. Political stability, much more so than any form of governance, is a precondition for growth. Free markets imply a process of creative destruction, free and fair competition, and a level playing field among companies. An educated workforce is a vital enabler of higher productivity and innovation. Corruption can seriously derail growth once it becomes endemic. Sound fiscal and monetary policies stabilize an economy as it goes through cycles and can greatly contribute to a more equal society and a more robust financial sector.

“The Mastery of Destiny” is a 1909 self-help book by British writer James Allen. Self-help books aim to help the reader with problems, offering them clear and effective guidance on how obstacles can be passed and solutions found, especially with regard to common issues and day-to-day life. Such books take their name from the 1859 best-selling “Self-Help” by Samuel Smiles, and are often also referred to as "self-improvement" books. Contents include: “Deeds, Characters, and Destiny”, “The Science of Self-control”, “Cause and Effect in Human Conduct”, “Training of the Will”, “Thoroughness”, “Mind-building and Life-building”, “Cultivation of Concentration”, “Practice of Meditation”, “The Power of Purpose”, “The Joy of Accomplishment”, etc. James Allen (1864–1912) was a British writer most famous for his inspirational poetry and being an early leader of the self-help movement. “As a Man Thinketh” (1903), his best known work, has been a significant source of inspiration for many self-help authors. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with an Essay from Within You is the Power by Henry Thomas Hamblin.

Manifest Destiny S Underworld written by Robert E. May and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-03 with History categories.

This fascinating study sheds new light on antebellum America's notorious "filibusters--the freebooters and adventurers who organized or participated in armed invasions of nations with whom the United States was formally at peace. Offering the first full-scale analysis of the filibustering movement, Robert May relates the often-tragic stories of illegal expeditions into Cuba, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries and details surprising numbers of aborted plots, as well. May investigates why thousands of men joined filibustering expeditions, how they were financed, and why the U.S. government had little success in curtailing them. Surveying antebellum popular media, he shows how the filibustering phenomenon infiltrated the American psyche in newspapers, theater, music, advertising, and literature. Condemned abroad as pirates, frequently in language strikingly similar to modern American denunciations of foreign terrorists, the filibusters were often celebrated at home as heroes who epitomized the spirit of Manifest Destiny. May concludes by exploring the national consequences of filibustering, arguing that the practice inflicted lasting damage on U.S. relations with foreign countries and contributed to the North-South division over slavery that culminated in the Civil War.
