Students embarking upon a colour chemistry course usually approach it by way of a general introduction and proceed to more detailed treatment of the subject when they have acquired some knowledge of its character and scope. This book has been written with the twofold purpose of serving as a guide to such students during the introductory part of their course and of supplying the needs in this field of others whose main interest is in a related branch of technology or pure chemistry. An attempt has been made to present the main features of the subject in an easily assimilable form. The great amount of published information renders the choice of material for a short book somewhat difficult, and I am keenly conscious of topics that might be thought worthy of more extensive treatment. However, a concise account cannot be comprehensive, and suggestions for further reading are provided at the end of the book. The chemistry of colouring matters can be regarded as a branch of pure chemistry, but the development of knowledge in this field has followed a course determined chiefly by the applications of dyes and pigments. It has therefore appeared appropriate to treat the subject here as a branch of technology.

The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, since its inception, has been recognized as a cornerstone of heterocyclic chemistry. Each volume attempts to discuss all aspects – properties, synthesis, reactions, physiological and industrial significance – of a specific ring system. To keep the series up-to-date, supplementary volumes covering the recent literature on each individual ring system have been published. Many ring systems (such as pyridines and oxazoles) are treated in distinct books, each consisting of separate volumes or parts dealing with different individual topics. With all authors are recognized authorities, the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Chemistry is considered worldwide as the indispensable resource for organic, bioorganic, and medicinal chemists.

This book is the result of teaching a one semester course in Applied Chemistry (Chemistry 224) to second year engineering students for over 15 years. The contents of the course evolved as the interests and needs of both the students and Engineering Faculty changed. All the students had at least one semester of Introductory Chemistry and it has been assumed in this text that the students have been exposed to Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, Solution Equilibrium, and Organic Chemistry. These topics must be discussed either before starting the Applied subjects or developed as required if the students are not familiar with these prerequisites. Engineering students often ask "Why is another Chemistry course required for Non-Chemical Engineers?" There are many answers to this question but foremost is that the Professional Engineer must know when to consult a Chemist and be able to communicate with him. When this is not done the consequences can be a disaster due to faulty design, poor choice of materials or inadequate safety factors. Examples of blunders abound and only a few will be described in an attempt to convince the student to take the subject matter seriously.

Because of a lack of appreciation for his efforts in developing modern polymer science, the contributions of Hermann Staudinger were disregarded for decades. There have also been delays in recognizing the contributions of other pioneers in polymer science. Hence, it is gratifying to note that Professor Seymour chaired an American Chemical Society Symposium focusing on the contributions of these pioneers and that Kluwer Academic Publishers has published the proceedings of this important symposium. H.Mark v DEDICATION This book on Pioneers in Polymer Science is dedicated to Nobel Laureate Polymer Scientists Hermann Staudinger, Emil Fischer, Herman Mark, Paul J. Flory, Linus Pauling, Carl S. Marvel, M. Polanyi, Giulio Natta, Karl Ziegler, and Bruce Merrifield as well as to those pioneers such as J.C. Patrick, Robert Thomas, William Sparks, Maurice Huggins, Qtto Bayer, Leo Baekeland, Anselm Payer, Roger Boyer, Waldo Semon, Robert Banks, J.P. Hogan, and other pioneers who, to a large degree, were responsible for the development of the world's second largest industry. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The editor appreciates the contribution of co-authors Herman Mark, C.H. Fisher, and G. Alan Stahl who co chaired the Symposium on Pioneers in Polymer Science at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society at Seattle, WA in 1984 and who contributed a chapter in this book. The editor is particularly grateful to Mischa Thomas who typed this manuscript.

Investigation Of Tetralin Explosion written by J. S. McDonald and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1960 with Heat categories.
An investigation was conducted to determine the cause of an explosion which occurred August 16, 1959, in the sodium laboratory at the Atomics International Division's Santa Susana facility. The explosion occurred in apparatus used for a natural-convection heat-transfer experiment with sodium. During the course of the experiment, cooling was provided to the heat sink by circulating tetraphydronaphthalene (tetralin). At the conclusion of the work, tetralin was allowed to remain stagnant in the cooling section over a period of several months. The autooxidation of tetralin to the hydroperoxide is postulated, the explosion resulting from the rapid decomposition of this compound. The condition and circumstances initiating the decomposition are unknown.
