A few weeks after my mother, Gloria Winifred Foley (Glory, nee Cavanagh), passed away I was filled with equal measures of excitement and trepidation when I discovered her stash of audio cassette tapes. Glory's taping included Adrian (Ade, her husband) and others recounting people and events of days long gone. These tapes were well on their way to being lost. My efforts to make sure that did not happen was the start of a family history adventure!Subjects include Ade's ancestors as some of the first settlers of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia; his family's involvement in the early development of the Melbourne suburb of Kew; and his life and work in the Victorian timber mills, including a stint as fireman on the Climax steam engine now housed in the Puffing Billy Railway Museum. Glory's side of the family is also covered, particularly their role as pioneers in Monto, Queensland; and their farming experiences, including the unique challenges of grazing cattle on Fraser Island.
