They are addressed especially to Christians by a Christian who desires to see a better feeling established between them and the race from which he springs. They are not published as a literary effort, but for the pur pose of glorifying God and advancing the spiritual kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus; by awakening the Christian world to a sense of 1ts duty to the Jewish race, and in the further hope of bringing to the' knowledge of the sin stricken and sorrow-laden the peace and joy to be found by accepting the burden-bearer, our Lord and Saviour. The thoughts are a faithful record of my spiritual life as Jew and Christian. I have come forward in the greatest of all causes, viz., in the hope of being a peace-maker between those who are wor shiping God under the old and those who are worshiping him under the new dispensation. Some may think my method is ill-advised, but I have written with all boldness from a consciousness of right-wishing. I ask the prayers and sympathy of every right-minded worshiper of God, Jew or Christian, for the success of my effort, and in committing these pages to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I say: Heavenly Father, Thy will not mine be done. A., San Franscisco I have often read in books of travel of a peculiarity of the residences of our co-religionists in those lands where religious persecution has not yet died out, and where the fear of the fanaticism of an ignorant multitude which ever and anon vent-s itself in the sacking of the Jewish quarter, yet haunts the minds of our brethren in faith. The peculiarity I allude to, is the striking contrast that exists between the exteriors and the interiors of the houses of Jewish families; the former frequently exhibiting a poverty and meanness utterly at variance with the wealth, the elegance, and the luxury disclosed within. Something very analogous to this will be experienced in our contemplation and examination of Judaism itself, which exhibits very different features as seen from without, and as seen from within. Different, if viewed even through a mental atmosphere clear of the mist and fog of prejudice; and how much greater must the contrast prove, when the exterior view is taken through the deceptive media of sectarian bigotry and hatred, through which it has been too frequently the custom of the world to regard it. Enlightened countries grant to the individual equality before the law; but they fail still to recognize the equality of whole peoples or nationalities. We seek to protect as individuals those constituting a minority; but we fail to realize that protection cannot be complete um less group equality also is recognized. Deeply imbedded in every people is the desire for full development - the longing, as Mazzini phrased it to elaborate and express their idea, to contribute their stone also to the pyramid of history. Nationality like democracy has been one of the potent forces making for man's advance during the past hundred years. The assertion of nationality has infused whole peeples with hope, manhood and self-respect. It has ennobled and made purposeful millions of lives. It offered them a future, and in doing so revived and capitalized all that was valuable in their past. The assertion of nation ality raised Ireland from the slough of despondency. It roused Southern Slavs to heroic deeds. It created gallant Belgium. It freed Greece. It gave us united Italy. It man ifested itself even among free peoples - like the Welsh who had no grievance, but who gave expression to their nationality through the revival of the old Cymric tongue. Each of these peeples developed because, as Mazzini said, they were enabled to proclaim to the world that they also live, think, love and labor for the benefit of all.
