In this hilarious and heartbreaking story, the author - the so-called "Threadbare Buzzard" among what he saw as the preening fliers of WWII - tells the stories of dogfights and fighter planes used by the Marine Corps in the Pacific. Before the United States entered World War II, Tomlinson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force to get into action and flying. Following Pearl Harbor, he and most of the other Americans serving in the RCAF were "repatriated" into the U.S. military, most into the Army Air Corps. Tomlinson was one of the few who chose the Marine Corps and after training, he was off to the Southwest Pacific and Guadalcanal with VMF-214, the squadron that became the Black Sheep. Late in the war, while flying off a carrier during raids against Japan, Tomlinson's four-plane division was assigned to be a high-altitude radio relay for the attacking forces. During this mission they encountered the jet stream, at that time a little-known phenomena, especially among fighter pilots accustomed to lower, less hostile altitudes. Hours later, lost, out of radio range, and out of fuel, they ditched in the northwest Pacific. Three of the four were rescued by the Sea Devil (SS 400). Tomlinson ended up in the naval hospital at Pearl Harbor for the closing months of the war. Filled with details about flying the Corsair.

Linking is one of the challenges for theories of the syntax-semantics interface. In this new approach, the author explores the hypothesis that the positions of syntactic arguments are strictly determined by lexical argument geometry. Through careful argumentation and original analysis, her study provides a framework for explaining the linking patterns of a range of verb classes, leading to a number of insights about lexical structure and a radical rethinking of many verb classes.

Analyzing the way that recent works of graphic narrative use the comics form to engage with the “problem” of reproduction, Shiamin Kwa’s Perfect Copies reminds us that the mode of production and the manner in which we perceive comics are often quite similar to the stories they tell. Perfect Copies considers the dual notions of reproduction, mechanical as well as biological, and explores how comics are works of reproduction that embed questions about the nature of reproduction itself. Through close readings of the comics My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris, The Black Project by Gareth Brookes, The Generous Bosom series by Conor Stechschulte, Sabrina by Nick Drnaso, and Panther by Brecht Evens, Perfect Copies shows how these comics makers push the limits of different ideas of “reproduction” in strikingly different ways. Kwa suggests that reading and thinking about books like these, that push us to engage with these complicated questions, teaches us how to become better readers.

The thrilling conclusion to the New York Times–bestselling fantasy trilogy from the legendary million-selling author and creator of Drizzt Do’Urden. Luthien Bedwyr, warrior leader of an elven rebellion and crusader for justice known as the Crimson Shadow, will not rest until he vanquishes the evil Wizard-King Greensparrow forever and wipes out the tyrant’s cyclopean army. No less than the fate of Luthien’s oppressed kingdom of Eriador hangs in the balance. But Luthien now faces his greatest challenge. His fierce alter ego may wield a magical sword and wear a scarlet cape that renders him invisible, but his formidable adversary has a counterpart of his own: an unstoppable and bloodthirsty colossus of a dragon. Hailed by Terry Brooks as a “fine adventure filled with memorable characters and compelling action,” this spellbinding series comes to a rousing finish, giving us “a world of depth and humanity, filled with color and sound and feeling and with heroes we can’t help but admire” (Tracy Hickman, New York Times–bestselling author of the Bronze Canticles Trilogy).
