Excerpt from Three Coronation Orders When the Henry Bradshaw Society was founded in 1890, it was thought that the coronation and consecration of our English sovereigns, an act so important, as Abbe Duchesne points out, from the civil, as well as from the religious, point of view, might well be illustrated by the new Society; and a series of the English Coronation Orders was spoken of. Beyond a haphazard assignation of services to individual sovereigns, very little seemed to have been done in the way of classification, or of investigation into the liturgical principles on which these services are constructed. An elementary division of these orders may be made something in the following manner. First the English Coronation Orders may be divided into two classes, those in English and those in Latin, and these correspond with prae-Reformation and post-Reformation times. Then the Latin or prae-Reformation orders may be divided into four groups or recensions; the former or post-Reformation into three groups or recensions. Of the four Latin recensions, the first is that in Egbert's Pontifical, which is already easily accessible: not only in the modern edition of the Pontifical itself, but in Martene, who has edited the order in his great collection. Excerpt from Four Scottish Coronations The august solemnity which, by God's good hand upon us, will be fulfilled on Thursday the 26th of June this year in the Abbey Church of Westminster - the Coronation of His Most Sacred Majesty King Edward VII., King by the Grace of God "of all the Britains" and of our Gracious Queen Alexandra - is of a nature that requires, both on the Sovereign's part and on his subjects, ' a serious and heedful preparation. Were it indeed no more than a court pageant, it would need to be prepared for. No ceremony of any kind can be well performed, which has not been duly arranged beforehand. And a Royal Coronation is a ceremony as complicated as it is rich and splendid. The vast and honourable assemblage must be duly marshalled: his proper place must be assigned to every one. The Thrones must be set, the pavements strewn with carpets, the Altar decked; the Regalia must be brought to the Abbey from the Tower; the oil for the Anointing and the Royal Oblations must be prepared; the words of the old Service must be adjusted to the new occasion; the music will have to be practised, the great officers of Church and State, and the King and Queen themselves, must be informed as to their several parts. Already, for months, a court has been sitting to adjudicate on the claims of those who allege a title to take part in the proceedings; and from Easter till well on in June the Abbey will be in the hands of workmen charged with the task of fitting it up for the great solemnity. Excerpt from Les Diamants De La Couronne: Opera in Three Acts The young Princess maria francesca, on her accession to the throne of Portugal, finding the treasury almost exhausted, orders the jewels of the Crown to be sold, in order to defray the expenses of her coronation, intending to replace them by counterfeits. For this purpose she goes disguised to the retreat of a band of coiners, and pretending she is lady in waiting to the Queen, and bearing the royal instructions, engages them to manufacture a set of false diamonds, which may be worn in state without detection. Don enrico DE sandoval, a young nobleman of rank, returning home from his travels, is lost among the mountains and seized by the coiners. Catarina - the name the Queen assumes - rescues him. Struck with her beauty and manners, Enrico falls in love with her, although he is pledged to his cousin diana, and was on his way to be married when he was stopped so unceremoniously. Catarina is not insensible to the admiration of the young cavalier, with whose entire history, to his surprise, she is acquainted. The jewels completed, Catarina is desirous to convey them to Lisbon, and secure the escape of the coiners. The latter is not easy to accomplish, as the mountains are surrounded by soldiers, despatched by the Minister of Police, uncle to Enrico. Ultimately, the forgers, arrayed as monks, elude the vigilance of the guards, and effect their escape. Enrico reaches his uncle's house, and preparations are being made for his marriage with his cousin. The contract is about to be signed - equally to the regret of Diana as Enrico, since she and don sebastian, a young officer, had long been pledged to each other - when Catarina is ushered in, the carriage, conveying her to Lisbon, having broken down in front of the Minister's door. She is received most graciously by all except Enrico, who, recognising her, is terrified lest she should be discovered. Fortunately the Minister has not seen her, being summoned away, by information that the Crown Diamonds have' been stolen, or he must have detected the royal personage. Enrico, to ensure Catarina's safe retreat, discloses the secret of the incognita to Diana, and the cousins, now come to an understanding about their mutual love affairs, contrive Catarina's escape. The lady, however, does not depart without leaving behind her the intelligence that she is the famous Queen of the Bandits. The time of Her Majesty's coronation draws nigh. According to the wish of the late King, a Council of Regency had been appointed to choose a husband for the young Queen but, as the members cannot agree, Her Majesty resolves to make choice for herself; and so she selects him who loved her for herself alone, and whose virtues, she knows, will cast a lustre on her throne, brighter than jewels, or gold, or kingly rank. Don Enrico's feelings can only be imagined, when he recognises in the Queen of Portugal, Catarina, the chief of the coiners, and hears the royal voice pronounce the word that gives him new life, and realises his highest earthly dreams and aspirations. Excerpt from The Manner of the Coronation of King Charles the First of England: At Westminister, 2 Feb, 1626 When the learned editor of Monumenta Ritualia was engaged in making a comparison of the various Orders of Coronation used in the case of successive Kings and Queens of England, he was unable to bring forward any satisfactory authority for the form used at Candlemas, 1626, when Charles I. was crowned. Mr. Maskell therefore was forced to refer his readers to "the very obscure and confused account in Prynne, Signal loyalty (pp. 90, 270)." Thanks to the liberality of His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, and to the great kindness of the authorities of St. John's College, Cambridge, we are now able to print (1) The collation of an order contemplated, and (2) The form actually used upon the memorable occasion above-mentioned. (3) Notes written by Dr. William Laud (then Bishop of St. David's), some immediately before, and others subsequently to the Coronation. The second of these documents (transcribed for the Henry Bradshaw Society, by Mr. Alfred Rogers, from the little volume which the King is said, by an excellent authority, to have held in his hand at the ceremony) forms the basis of our text. The first and third contribute the majority of our annotations. Reference has been made occasionally to a fourth MS. authority, viz., Sancroft's draft made by him for the Coronation of James II., for which purpose he had recourse to the Coronation Service of Charles I. Negotiations for Prince Charles's marriage with the Princess Henrietta Maria of France had been concluded shortly before the death of K. Excerpt from The King's Serjeants Officers of State: With Their Coronation Services There would seem to be at the present time a very real need for a work dealing with the subject of serjeanty, one of the great English tenures, and with the services due from those whom Domesday Book styles the King's serjeants (servientes regis). Although the materials for such a study have accumulated rapidly of late, there is no modern book devoted to the subject, nor, indeed, is there any book which attempts to deal with it systematically, in the scientific historical spirit. Blount's ever-green little book, "Fragmenta Antiquitatis, Ancient Tenures of Land, and Jocular customs of some manors," was issued so far back as 1679, and, neither in its original form nor in its later editions, does it supply the want. Indeed, it touched on much that was not serjeanty at all, while omitting a great deal that is essential to a study of the subject. It is only right to remember that, as Blount modestly observes, he published his collection for the entertainment and relaxation of the reader. He wrote, as his preface informs us, that the studious, when weary with poring upon Littleton's Tenures, and his learned Commentator, might 'relaxere fibulam' by recurring to these, and smile at the inoffensive mirth, both of our kings, in former times, and lords of manors in creating them. It is no systematic treatise, no classified arrangement, that he sets before us, but a scrap-book, or olla podrida ranging from the tenures, or alleged tenures of great officers of state, to those of humble peasants. He jotted down, in the course of his researches, undertaken "for other ends," tenures "in some respect or other remarkable" or "singular."
