The economic prosperity of a nation is a complex function of many factors, including its culture, geography, history, legal origins, ethnolinguistic fractionalization, resource endowment, leadership and religious homogeneity. However, economic prosperity is most robustly related to the quality of a nation’s institutions under which its resources are put to productive use. Institutions are the humanly devised constraints that structure political, economic and social interactions. Fundamental economic institutions, like property rights and the rule of law, structure the incentives that affect a nation’s productivity. Since at least the early 1990’s, economists have quantified economic institutions and policies by aggregating economic policy variables into economic indexes. Of these indexes, the most popular is the Economic Freedom of the World, which measures the consistency of a nation’s institutions with the principles of economic freedom. After decades of study, scholars know that economic freedom is positively related to income, gender equality, civil liberty and happiness among other desirable economic outcomes. Despite the benefits of simplifying institutions into a single number, the implicit assumptions required to do so are costly. By summarizing institutional quality as a single quantity, scholars assume that the underlying institutional structure of two economies are identical as long as their summary scores are identical. This assumption is often false, and this research examines the costs of this assumption for modeling economic growth. The common methodology for measuring institutional quality ignores both institutional volatility and institutional imbalance. This research shows that both measures are robustly and negatively related to economic growth rates. Therefore, models that simplify a nation’s institutions to a single value measured at a single period of time are assuming away valuable information that helps explain a nation’s prosperity or lack thereof. In addition to examining the costs of these false assumptions, this research also examines the institutional trends among U.S. states since 1981. Despite declining economic freedom in the United States relative to other nations, state and local governments in the United States are liberalizing in recent decades. This phenomena is driven by increasing labor market freedom among states.

This dissertation is composed of three chapters. All three deal with topics in development economics. The first chapter examines the effects on village institutions of introducing formal financial institution options into the village. The second addresses the effects of government policy on educational investment and crime. The third tests the explanatory power of various explanations of the gender gap in math test scores. The first chapter examines the effects of a transition from a ``traditional'' economy based on an uncertain source of income, with risk fully insured away by one's neighbors in a social network through costly network ties, to a ``modern'' economy in which some agents have access to partial insurance at a lower cost. A theoretical model is used to show that village social networks can break down as some members of the village no longer need the insurance the social network provides, producing a reduction in welfare (if the costs of reducing moral hazard are not too high) for at least some individuals and possibly the village as a whole. This loss of welfare can occur even when networks provide other benefits to those belonging to them and is likely to be heterogeneous, depending on the opportunities and networks available to individuals. This paper tests these predictions using Indonesian data to examine the effect of a change in the banking institutions available to a community on the strength of social networks (measured by community participation) and welfare (measured by household expenditure and by child health). The analysis finds that changing financial institution availability in general does not influence community participation or welfare, but that financial institutions that primarily serve certain groups do relatively reduce the welfare of households not in those groups, which is consistent with the hypotheses generated by the model. Crime is an important feature of economic life in many countries, especially in the developing world. Crime distorts many economic decisions because it acts like an unpredictable tax on earnings. In particular, the threat of crime may influence people's willingness to invest in schooling or physical capital. The second chapter explores the questions "What influence do crime rates and levels of investment have on one another?" and "How do government policies affect the relationship between investment and crime?" by creating a simple structural model of crime and educational investment and attempting to fit this model to Mexican data. A method of simulated moments procedure is used to estimate parameters of the model and the estimated parameters are then used to carry out policy simulations. The simulations show that increasing spending on police or increasing the severity of punishment reduces crime but has little effect on educational investment. Increased educational subsidies increase educational investment but reduce crime only slightly. Thus, one type of policy is insufficient to accomplish the goals of both reducing crime and increasing education. The third chapter is joint work with Prashant Bharadwaj, Giacomo De Giorgi, and Christopher Neilson. Boys tend to have better performances than girls in mathematical testing; in particular, there are significantly more boys than girls among high achievers and the score distribution appears to have a longer right tail for boys. We confirm such results on several low- and middle-income countries. In particular we find that the gender gap is already present by age 10 and substantially increases by age 14 and 15. We propose and try to test a series of explanations for such a gap: (i) parental investment, (ii) ability, (iii) school resources, (iv) individual investment and effort (not tested directly), (v) competitive environment, and (vi) cultural norms. We conclude that none of our proposed explanations can account for a substantial portion of the gap.

This dissertation will examine, theoretically and empirically, the relationship between religion and state and how the historical evolution of this relationship has affected current economic outcomes. Developing an argument centered on legitimizing relationship between political rulers and religion, and using a new dataset that has information on the religious and political histories of today's nations since the year 1000, it first demonstrates how state religion has evolved over time and across space since the year 1000, then analyzes how historical religious differences between rulers and segments of populations affect current civil conflict, and finally extend the analysis to the historical religious roots of current state capacity and economic development across countries.

This thesis consists of three independent chapters. The first chapter examines the strategic choices of the targets and the intensity of violence by rebel groups. The chapter presents a theoretical framework that links a rebel group's targeting decisions to income shocks. It highlights that this relationship depends on the structure of the rebels' tax base. The hypotheses from the model are tested in the context of India's Naxalite conflict. The second chapter estimates the impact of military recruitment on human capital accumulation in colonial Punjab. In this context, I find that higher military recruitment was associated with increased literacy at the district-religion level. The final chapter presents a model that describes the optimal design of civil-military institutions in a setting where some control of the military over domestic politics is deemed desirable.

This dissertation contains essays concerning informal institutions and their influence on economic outcomes in developing countries. Three types of informal institutions are discussed in each chapter: cultural groups in India consisting of religious and caste groups, traditional village chief institutions, and lastly, matrilineal and patrilineal norms in Malawi.The first chapter investigates the role of group affiliation in determining married women's labor-supply in India. Despite the country's rapid economic growth, India's female labor-supply has been stagnant. In the literature, this phenomenon has been attributed to several demand- and supply-side explanations. Using a modified structural static female labor-supply model, this chapter analyzes a supply-side explanation of this phenomenon---the idea that cultural groups affect female labor-supply by influencing preference and fixed labor cost of entering the labor force. Group affiliations' effect on preferences and costs of economic decision has mostly been analyzed separately in the literature. Using data from the Indian Human Development Survey and a novel identification strategy, the chapter discusses the relative importance of preference relative to cost in creating labor-supply inequality across various cultural group affiliations (religion and caste).In the second chapter, co-authors and I discuss the question of whether traditional village chiefs promote or restrict economic growth. Previous literature has not produced enough empirical evidence to achieve a consensus on this issue. Using data from the Malawi Integrated Household Survey, this chapter documents the additional empirical relationship between measures of chief power through land allocation and two measures of economic growth: agricultural misallocation of resources and consumption smoothing.Lastly, the third chapter explores the allocation of agricultural inputs between husbands and wives in Malawi. Previous literature has suggested that resources are not allocated to achieve productive efficiency, with most evidence coming from African countries. Although the gender component of inequality in the distribution of resources has been documented, co-authors and I argue that the underlying marital sorting of partners also contributes to more or less resource misallocation. We show that in matrilocal regions, where land is passed through the daughter and kept by the wife upon divorce, couples exhibit more positive assortative matching and less resource misallocation among spouses.
