This two volume monograph about the region of Thy in the early Bronze Age provides a high resolution archaeological and ecological model of the organisation of landscape, settlements and households during the period 1500-1100 BC. Bordering the North Sea to the west, and the calmer waters of the Limfjord to the east, the region of Thy in Denmark experienced four centuries of intense economic and demographic expansion. By combining results from environmental and economic research (pollen and palaeo-botanical analyses) with intensive field surveys and excavations of farmsteads with exceptional preservation, it has been possible to open a window to the changes that transformed Bronze Age society and its environment during a few centuries of exceptional expansion and wealth consumption. The results from this interdisciplinary venture made it possible to link together the histories of local farmsteads with the wider regional and global history of the Bronze Age in North-western Europe during this period. Namen knjige je prikazati pomen orientacije grobov za srednjeveško arheologijo smrti in pokopov. Pri tem sta poudarjeni dve ključni točki. Prvič, orientacija grobov je bila v srednjem veku pomemben in v nekaterih primerih najpomembnejši način izražanja simbolnega pomena pokopov. Drugič, da bi arheologi razvozlali ta pomen, mora biti analiza izvedena z metodološko strogostjo, pri interpretaciji pa je potrebno upoštevati širši kontekst. Blejski otok je otoček na Blejskem jezeru, ki ima za sodobne Slovence poseben pomen, za lokalno prebivalstvo pa je imel poseben pomen že od prazgodovine dalje. Zato ni presenetljivo, da sta srednjeveški pokopališči in cerkev na otočku prežeti s simboliko. In veliko te simbolike je bilo izražene z usmeritvijo posameznih grobov, skupin grobov in cerkvene stavbe. V knjigi je zbranih deset besedil – sedem antropoloških hodopisnih esejev, pospremljenih z dvema daljšima uvodnima tekstoma ter epilogom o hoji in pisanju kot dveh utečenih, a na tem mestu sveže premišljenih metodah antropološkega in etnološkega raziskovanja. Sedem esejev se sprehodi po obmejnih pokrajinah Istre, Goričkega, Porabja, Koroške in Julijskih Alp, predhodi jim dialoška faza brušenja misli med različno formiranimi raziskovalci, končno pa vseh sedem izriše svojo sled v vmesnem prostoru med znanstvenim tekstom in esejistiko. Z osredotočanjem na korake, besede in poti, bodisi prehojene ali zapisane, poskuša knjiga osvetliti vmesni prostor, hojo in pisanje pa pri tem razume kot spoznavni proces, terensko izkušnjo, kot del dolgega pogovora, ki meandrira med okljuki življenja. Gre za hibridno, robno, tudi mejno in drzno meditativno hodopisje, ki bralcu ponudi nedokonč(a)ne eksperimentalne antropološke tekste.

The exotic and impressive grave goods from burials of the ‘Wessex Culture’ in Early Bronze Age Britain are well known and have inspired influential social and economic hypotheses, invoking the former existence of chiefs, warriors and merchants and high-ranking pastoralists. Alternative theories have sought to explain the how display of such objects was related to religious and ritual activity rather than to economic status, and that groups of artefacts found in certain graves may have belonged to religious specialists. This volume is the result of a major research that aimed to investigate Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age grave goods in relation to their possible use as special dress accessories or as equipment employed within ritual activities and ceremonies. Many items of adornment can be shown to have formed elements of elaborate costumes, probably worn by individuals, both male and female, who held important ritual roles within society. Furthermore, the analysis has shown that various categories of object long interpreted as mundane types of tool were in fact items of bodily adornment or implements used in ritual contexts, or in the special embellishment of the human body. Although never intended to form a complete catalogue of all the relevant artefacts from England the volume provides an extensive, and intensively illustrated, overview of a large proportion of the grave goods from English burial sites.

Rescue excavations were carried out along the terrace north of Ancient Corinth by Henry Robinson, the director of the Corinth Excavations, and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens on behalf of the Greek Archaeological Service, in 1961 and 1962. They revealed 70 tile graves, limestone sarcophagi, and cremation burials (the last are rare in Corinth before the Julian colony), and seven chamber tombs (also rare before the Roman period). The burials ranged in date from the 5th century B.C. to the 6th century A.D., and about 240 skeletons were preserved for study. This volume publishes the results of these excavations and examines the evidence for changing burial practices in the Greek city, Roman colony, and Christian town. Documented are single graves and deposits, the Robinson "Painted Tomb," two more hypogea, and four built chamber tombs. Ethne Barnes describes the human skeletal remains, and David Reese discusses the animal bones found in the North Terrace tombs. The author further explores the architecture of the chamber tombs as well as cemeteries, burial practices, and funeral customs in ancient Corinth. One appendix addresses a Roman chamber tomb at nearby Hexamilia, excavated in 1937; the second, by David Jordan, the lead tablets from a chamber tomb and its well. Concordances, grave index numbers, Corinth inventory numbers, and indexes follow. This study will be of interest to classicists, historians of several periods, and scholars studying early Christianity.
