Concerned with the trendy, technocratic, and at times sophistical character of contemporary education at all levels, both public and private, the authors of this collection seek to reinvigorate a Thomistic approach to education appropriate to the problems of our day. With its main inspiration taken from the work of Jacques Maritain, especially his 1943 Education at the Crossroads, the volume presents a trenchant critique of the "privacies" of contemporary education, with its emphasis upon the conventional and useful. At the same time, the essays present the outlines of the proper alternative, an education which helps students draw out from themselves the desire for truths which transcend the contingencies of culture and utility. Such an education seeks to guide students to "the common things" available to all human beings. The essays uphold an account of man's intellectual and affective capacities which understands these capacities as naturally ordered to truth. The essays approach the task in different but complementary ways: in critiques of contemporary theories of education, in speculative accounts of knowledge and learning, in applications of theory to specific institutional settings, and in discussions of the political contexts governing modern education. In this rich variety of ways, the essays in The Common Things not only point the way back to the crossroads Maritain spoke of fifty years ago; they go on to indicate something of the landscape along the road not taken by contemporary education. In the field of knowledge discovery, graphs of concepts are an expressive and versatile modeling technique providing ways to reason about information implicit in a set of data. Interesting examples of this can be found under the mathematical theory of formal concept analysis, dedicated to the construction of a lattice of concepts by defining a Galois connection on a binary relationship. This book present such graph of concepts under the more complex case of data that comes in a set of structured objects; e.g. a set of sequences, trees or graphs. Nodes of this graph will represent patterns in the data and edges will correspond to relationships of specificity. From this combinatorial object results are derived such as a full characterization of logical implications and closed partial orders. The results presented in this book are coupled with examples and empirical experiments that illustrate the derived theoretical contributions.

Facsimile edition of the 1974 reissue of Flinders Petrie’s 1896 account of the excavation, mainly, of tombs in the area around Ballas and Naqada on the edge of the Egyptian desert, 30 miles north of Thebes. Several areas of the ancient towns of Deir and Nubt, the latter identified as the center of Set worship, and more tombs were investigated. At each cemetery, traditionally furnished Old and Middle Kingdom tombs were examined and many proved to have been plundered and reused in antiquity. Petrie named these later burials as of a New Race and describes them in detail at Ballas and Naqada. A collection of mostly Palaeolithic flint artifacts is also described.
