The plays of María Martínez Sierra were popular in Spain, South America and in translation on Broadway and London's West End in the first half of the 20th century but they were thought to be written by her husband, the celebrated director and playwright Gregorio Martínez Sierra. After his death, the authorship of his work was revealed to be that of María, making her one of the most important playwrights of her time. This edited collection features three plays by María Martínez Sierra, translated by Helen and Harley Granville-Barker, along with an introduction by Patricia O'Connor, University of Cincinnati, US, which examines María's extraordinary life and work, and the battle for her authorship to be recognized in both the Spanish-speaking and anglophone world. This volume focuses on plays centred on strong women; and each is translated by the eminent man of theatre Harley Granville-Barker and his wife, Helen, whose own story holds stark parallels to Maria's in terms of authorship. The collection is edited by playwright Richard Nelson and Professor Colin Chambers, who contribute an essay on the translation work of the Granville-Barkers. The plays are: The Kingdom of God (1928); The Romantic Young Lady (1920) and Take Two From One (1931). María Martínez Sierra: A Great Playwright Hidden in Plain Sight recognizes María de la O Lejárraga García, to use her birth name, as one of the most important female playwrights, not just in Spain, but globally, in the first half of the 20th century.

Githa Sowerby’s Rutherford and Son took the London theatre by storm in 1912. Following its triumphant run, the play toured to New York, was produced throughout England, and was translated and staged in multiple European locations. Yet Sowerby’s initial theatrical success would not be repeated. With historical hindsight, we can see Sowerby’s experience as comparable to that of many other women writers who struggled to achieve lasting recognition, especially when their work was perceived as critiquing the forces restricting women’s lives. These vivid domestic dramas explore timely questions of capitalism, feminism, and personal freedom. With the acclaimed revival of Rutherford at the National Theatre in 1994, and with the efforts by feminist scholars and theatre artists to rediscover the work of such forgotten women writers, Sowerby and her dramas have secured renewed interest. This edition gathers Rutherford and Son, its companion piece A Man and Some Women, and the postwar play The Stepmother. The edition will provide teachers, students, and artists with important historical contexts for Sowerby’s dramas and will demonstrate the ongoing cogency of these dynamic, insightful, and engaging plays.

Harley Granville-Barker S Prefaces To Shakespeare Originally Published In Five Series Between 1927 And 1947 Covering Ten Plays Are Collected In Four Volumes:Volume I (Hamlet), Volume Ii (King Lear, Cymbeline, Julius Caesar), Volume Iii (Antony And Cleopatra, Coriolanus) And Volume Iv (Love S Labour S Lost, Romeo And Juliet, The Merchant Of Venice, Othello). An Actor, Dramatist, Producer And A Profound Shakespearean Scholar, Granville-Barker Brought About A Revolution In His Shakespearean Productions In The First Decade Of The Twentieth Century By Recapturing, With His Experience And Expertise, The Spirit And Vitality Of The Plays As They Were Produced On The Elizabethan Stage. He Saw Shakespeare As A Man Of The Theatre And Gave A Lie To Lamb That The Plays Of Shakespeare Were Less Calculated For Performance On A Stage Than Those Of Any Dramatist Whatsoever. About The Productions G.B. Harrison Remarks That They Were The Most Important Productions For A Hundred Years Not Only Because They Were Beautiful In Themselves, But Because For The First Time Since The Seventeenth Century Shakespeare S Plays Were Played Just As They Were Written, And Not Cut And Rearranged To Suit The Scene-Shifter. The Prefaces Are Elaborate Explications Of What Shape The Productions, And How And Why Granville-Barker S Alert Attention To The Minutiae Of A Text And Threadbare Discussions Of Various Aspects Of The Plays Reveal The Dramatic Wealth Of A Shakespearean Play. The Prefaces With Their Focus On The Integrity And Vitality Of A Play Have Become A Landmark In Shakespearean Criticism. T.S. Eliot Has Rightly Remarked: Perhaps More Than Any Other Single Writer, H. Granville-Barker By His Prefaces, Illuminating The Plays With The Understanding Of The Producer, Has Suggested The Need For A Synthesis Of The Several Points Of View From Which Shakespeare Can Be Studied. Any Teacher And Student Of Shakespeare Will Find These Books Immensely Valuable.

In this volume leading scholars assess the contributions of Max Reinhardt, Leopold Jessner and Harley Granville Barker to European theatre. Their work represents the cultural shift from traditional theatre practices of the 19th century to the rise of Modernism and its means of establishing theatre as an art form in its own right. Uncovering the theories and visions of theatre held by Reinhardt, Jessner and Barker, this volume establishes the contribution and importance of these directors in the development of modern theatre and their significance alongside the better-known names of Stanislavski and Brecht.
