This excellent introduction to the essential issues that have preoccupied philosophers throughout the centuries provides fresh and engaging portraits of the greatest thinkers on three perennial questions: What can I know? What may I hope? What ought I to do? The author summarizes the thoughts of Plato and Wittgenstein on the possibility of philosophical knowledge; Kant and Nietzsche on the existence of God; Aristotle and Heidegger on human virtue. The first member of the pair is a builder, the second a destroyer. One explores the promise of a theory, the other the consequences of its ruin. These juxtaposed pairs are not self-contained, however. All six thinkers are engaged in a dialogue with one another on issues that touch our lives directly and profoundly. The author has arranged them in an order that unveils an ever-deepening understanding of the moral, spiritual and intellectual space in which our lives unfold. For anyone wishing to discover, or rediscover, philosophy in its original meaning—"the love of wisdom"—this engaging, clearly written, and accessible volume is an excellent place to start.

To get the best answer-in business, in life-you have to ask the best possible question. Innovation expert Warren Berger shows that ability is both an art and a science. It may be the most underappreciated tool at our disposal, one we learn to use well in infancy-and then abandon as we grow older. Critical to learning, innovation, success, even to happiness-yet often discouraged in our schools and workplaces-it can unlock new business opportunities and reinvent industries, spark creative insights at many levels, and provide a transformative new outlook on life. It is the ability to question-and to do so deeply, imaginatively, and “beautifully.” In this fascinating exploration of the surprising power of questioning, innovation expert Warren Berger reveals that powerhouse businesses like Google, Nike, and Netflix, as well as hot Silicon Valley startups like Pandora and Airbnb, are fueled by the ability to ask fundamental, game-changing questions. But Berger also shares human stories of people using questioning to solve everyday problems-from “How can I adapt my career in a time of constant change?” to “How can I step back from the daily rush and figure out what really makes me happy?” By showing how to approach questioning with an open, curious mind and a willingness to work through a series of “Why,” “What if,” and “How” queries, Berger offers an inspiring framework of how we can all arrive at better solutions, fresh possibilities, and greater success in business and life.

“A compelling story of everyday courage” (Elizabeth Gilbert). Patty Chang Anker grew up eager to please and afraid to fail. But after thirty-nine years, she decided it was time to stop being a chicken. Motivated initially to become a better role model for her two kids, she vowed to master the fears that were choking the fun and spontaneity out of life. She learned to dive into a swimming pool, ride a bike, do a handstand, and surf. As she shared her experiences, she discovered that most people suffer from their own secret terrors—of flying, driving, heights, public speaking, and more. It became her mission to help others do what they thought they couldn’t and to experience the joy and aliveness that is the true reward of becoming brave. Inspired and inspiring, this book draws on Anker’s interviews with teachers, therapists, coaches, and clergy to convey both practical advice and profound wisdom. Through her own journey and the stories of others, she conveys with grace and infectious exhilaration the most vital lesson of all: Fear isn’t the end point to life, but the point of entry.

The Will Of God written by James C. Howell and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-16 with Religion categories.

How are we to know the will of God? In this honest discussion, veteran pastor and theologian James C. Howell considers a number of issues relating to God's will, how it is known, how it is done, and how we respond when bad things happen and we feel God is absent or has turned away from us. In this sensitive presentation, Howell explores these questions and provides ways of recognizing the true things to which we can hold in the midst of hard times. Howell proceeds simply and practically to consider personal understandings of God, God's will for our lives, and ways in which God's will is lived. He reflects on what to do and believe when bad things happen, "why" they happen, and the quest for God in the midst of it all, recognizing that God's will is for good.

My Way! is a compilation of 365 daily e-mails Colonel Casado sent his sons, Ben and Alex. He had set a goal of sending them a daily e-mail for 365 days, and after about a month, his wife asked him to stop sending them because the boys weren't reading them. He asked his youngest son, Alex, if he wanted him to stop, and Alex said no. That's when he knew he was on to something. Looking for a good way to communicate with his boys in our high-speed, super-busy digital world, he thought a daily e-mail might be a great way to at least let them know he was thinking of them and at best share some helpful insights and experiences. After thirty-six-plus years of leadership and management experience as a group and squadron commander in the military and a senior leader in the civilian world, the daily passages centered on those things Colonel Casado knew best-leadership, motivation, goal setting, etc. My Way! is based on his personal values, military and civilian leadership experience, and a desire to help develop current and future leaders. My Way! is Colonel Casado's first book but hopefully not his last. After a while, it became apparent that My Way! could help others and thus began the journey of turning the passages into a book. After achieving the 365-day goal, he found he had over 64,000 words on paper. My Way! is a fun and very diverse compilation of passages on a variety of issues falling into the realm of self-help, leadership, management, motivation, parenting, advice, etc. and in the hopes of helping others; here you have it! The Anglo-French novelist William Le Queux penned popular thrillers and intriguing espionage novels. He led an adventurous life, in keeping with his fiction, serving as a diplomat for San Marino, while extensively travelling Europe, the Balkans and North Africa. He was also a flying buff and a wireless pioneer, who broadcasted music from his own station long before radio was generally available. His most famous works are the invasion fantasies ‘The Great War in England in 1897’ and ‘The Invasion of 1910’. Le Queux’s exaggerated tales and falsified accounts of Britain’s neighbours, playing upon the fervid xenophobia of the time, were so powerful and gripping that they led to the creation of Britain’s first Secret Service Bureau, the forerunner of MI5. This eBook presents the largest collection ever compiled of Le Queux’s fiction, with numerous illustrations, many rare texts and informative introductions. Would the contents of an ancient Egyptian scroll when deciphered threaten the three major religions of the world? tienne Cloutier, a French-Canadian archaeologist, is asked by his longtime friend and colleague Haroun Abdul el-Kurdi, Department Head of Antiquities and the Cairo Museum, to come to Egypt to decipher a perplexing scroll that has just surfaced. He is told the author is none other than Moses. From the very start, there are outside forces trying to get hold of the scroll. His acceptance to do the deciphering sets off a series of events that threatens his very life. When the scroll is deciphered, it reveals that its contents are purely religious and discloses Moses early religious concepts. It is these new concepts that Moses would later pass on to the Children of Israel. When a meeting with the religious heads of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is held and the contents and author of the scroll are revealed, hostility breaks out. In the end, it is the Vatican ambassador to Egypt who pleads that the scroll be kept a secret, hidden away, even suggesting that it be destroyed.

This book explores the different ways women have been liberating themselves from the shackles of patriarchy and cultural laws that inhibit their independence and freedom to show that women are also contributing meaningfully to society. Women have worked to attain freedom through speaking out, writing memoirs, fiction, plays, poetry, and essays. The creative experiences of women are captured in this book, thus fulfilling the book's aim to give women voices to air their views and show that they are effectual members of society. The book examines the roles played by patriarchy, religion, and socioeconomic and political systems that keep women to the background. It also examines the issue of education, otherhood, marginalization, cultural imposition, and the diverse positions of women in local and international affairs. The book testifies that women's literature, and the stories of women all over the world, can be appreciated and viewed from different perspectives because of the diverse cultural environment in which women find themselves. This confirms that the issue of marginalization, suppression, and oppression of women are on-going problems in different societies around the world.
