But statements made by Mattheson indicate that Bertouch produced an extensive body of sacred compositions as well. Only three cantatas, composed before 1694, are known to survive; the manuscripts, which are part of the Bokemeyer collection, are held in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Two of these works are solo cantatas for a single voice, while the remaining one is a large-scale chorale cantata based on "Wachet auff." Both solo cantatas end with a joyful Alleluia movement and were obviously written for professional singers with considerable lung capacity. The chorale cantata, too, makes substantial demands on the soloists. Contrasting sections, tone-painting and occasional chromatic writing are features that should arouse the interest of singers and scholars studying seventeenth-century northern German vocal music.

Excerpt from We Must Through Great Tribulation; Wir Müssen Durch Viel Trübsal: Sacred Cantata No. 146 for the Third Sunday After Easter The full score includes Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass soli, four-part Chorus, Flute, two Oboes, two Oboi d'amore, Taille, Strings, and Organ. This cantata would seem to be one of several written at the time when the St. Thomas School was being renovated, and a small positive organ was moved into the church, where it was used as an obbligato instrument for playing such solo parts as are found in this and certain other cantatas. The Sinfonia is the first movement of the D minor Concerto for Clavier and Orchestra, which also introduces Cantata No. 188. Here the organ is indicated as the solo instrument. The second movement is founded on the Adagio of the concerto mentioned above. Three elements unite to form this remarkable chorus: a ground bass, a freely moving solo part, and an independent chorus superimposed.
