The aim of this book is to model multiple species food chain in three dimensions using system of Lotka-Volterra equations also known as the predator-prey equations. The consequences of varying parameters in Lotka-Volterra equations which cause changes in population dynamics are examined carefully. The effect on population dynamics as a result of these parametric changes in the systems are studied within invariant surfaces and, in terms of stability, in the neighborhood of equilibrium points. Of course the intention is to investigate the periodic behavior and the initial conditions that lead to it. It is known that the two-dimensional system exhibit stable cyclic behavior for all initial conditions where neither population tends to extinct. However, for the three-dimensional system, the behavior of the system is no longer cyclic all the time but varies, depending on the choice of constants used in the system definition. We might expect for model in chapter 3 that two prey and one predator to coexist; this is not always the case. Our investigation shows that all three species can coexist cyclically only if both prey species are essentially the same otherwise the weaker prey specie dies out eventually. Models discussed in chapters 4 and 5 represent the restrictions imposed on a population by environmental factors, species competition and other limited resources. Our study demonstrates the periodic behavior of the system (4) in chapter 6, which is non-asymptotically stable around the equilibrium point for a particular realistic case. In all cases prey species survive, however the existence of top level predator over time depends solely upon the parameter's value. The merits and flaws of these models are also discussed.

This book gives a unifying framework for estimating the abundance of open populations: populations subject to births, deaths and movement, given imperfect measurements or samples of the populations. The focus is primarily on populations of vertebrates for which dynamics are typically modelled within the framework of an annual cycle, and for which stochastic variability in the demographic processes is usually modest. Discrete-time models are developed in which animals can be assigned to discrete states such as age class, gender, maturity, population (within a metapopulation), or species (for multi-species models). The book goes well beyond estimation of abundance, allowing inference on underlying population processes such as birth or recruitment, survival and movement. This requires the formulation and fitting of population dynamics models. The resulting fitted models yield both estimates of abundance and estimates of parameters characterizing the underlying processes.

This is an inadvertent book, though it did arise naturally enough from a course I give in theoretical ecology. But I wouldn't have given the course at all if one colleague in my department hadn't left for a leave of absence, while another abruptly resigned. This propelled me to the fore where this teaching responsibility was concerned, one I had never had any intention of discharging. Then it turned out that one of my students was regularly unable to make half the classes. As a result, I began giving him my lecture notes each week. As I knew that someone else would be reading them, I began to write my notes more carefully. Naturally enough, the other students soon began to demand the notes too. Eventually they were indulged. Thus I found myself writing a textbook manuscript. By the next year, the students were handed all their notes in one package at the outset. But these were still just hand-written. Inevitably, the demand that they be typed arose. This I didn't want to do until I found a publisher. As it turned out, Tim Hardwick of Croom Helm was willing to have his firm fill this role, to my great satisfaction. • and his considerable frustration. I have been a desultory author about producing this final text, and can only express my gratitude for his enduring patience over more than 18 months of delays.

When we wrote this book it was, admittedly, flrst of all for the sake of our own enjoyment and enlightenment. We will, however, add our sincerely meant (but rather traditional) hope that it will prove interesting to graduate students, to colleagues and to anyone else, who will bother to read it. The book was written as a joint effort by a theoretically inclined population geneticist and an experimental ecologist who share opinions on what is interesting in the fleld of theoretical ecology. While we believe that qualifled natural history is of indisputable intrinsic value, we think that ecology is a natural science which should have a theoretical framework. On the other hand, theoretical ecology must draw its inspiration from nature and yield results which give insight into the flndings of the naturalist and inspire him to make new observations and experiments. Without this relationship between fleld biology and theory, mathe matical ecology may become a discipline totally divorced from biology and solve-albeit interesting-mathematical problems without signiflcance for ecology. Therefore, in addition to theoretical population biology (including some original models) the book also discusses observational data from nature to show how the theoretical models give new insight and how observations give rise to new theoretical thought. While no book on ecology could do without the mention of the hare-lynx example (and ours is, therefore, no exception) we have tried to bring new examples mainly derived from one of the authors' fleld of experience: microbial ecology and marine biology.
