The texts of Ambassador Matjila's statements and speeches below are taken from official UN documents (Minutes of meetings) available in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and are reproduced as they appear, without the Protocol references commonly used in such circumstances and instances. They were used with the permission of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation as sought by Ambassador Matjila. As is recognised in international law, the will of the State, an international legal entity, is expressed through its representatives, physical persons occupying special positions within the State and giving a face to its organs. Thus, these interventions made by the Ambassador to express the position of the Republic of South Africa on the issues under consideration. It is indeed in his capacity of Permanent Representative of South Africa that he was called upon to make these interventions. The work is devoid of any theoretical or doctrinal claim. It is intended to be more informative. This is why it is not accompanied by doctrinal commentaries, nor, consequently, by references to scientific references. The book aspires to be exhaustive, so there was no need to limit or choose the texts that should appear here. To make it a practical and easy-to-use tool, the chronological classification by organ has been preferred to the thematic classification. In the United Nations archiving system, interventions before the Main Committees other than the First Committee are not reproduced in full. only a simple summary is offered. these summaries are also contained in this work and are recognisable by the fact that the name of the Ambassador is quoted at the beginning of the summary. the same applies to interventions made before the Economic and Social Council. The work is divided into 4 parts: the first focuses on statements made before the General Assembly, the second concern the statements before the Economic and Social Council, the third, statements before the Security Council and the last part gathers the presidential statements made during the South African presidency of the Council and the resolutions adopted by the Council after South Africa's sponsorship. It is hoped that as a coffee table book, this collection will help enrich research and discussion about African contributions to the content of multilateralism at the United Nations. The photos inserted at the end of the work show a slice of life and activity of the Ambassador during his stay in New York. While they are also in the public domain, they come from Ambassador Matjila’s private collections, unless otherwise stated in the caption of each photo.

This book provides a quantitative and qualitative overview of the overall impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa’s (BRICS countries) capacity to re-shape global climate governance and explore areas for mutual cooperation. BRICS countries account for nearly 40% of the total world population and are thus intrinsic to the global efforts and results for Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and beyond. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic does not at first appear to be directly related to BRICS’ policies to address climate change, but it has influenced the pace and nature of climate action due to the loss of human and financial capital. This book examines this correlation and raises awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts and potential solutions on BRICS’ climate strategies. Drawing on case studies from each country, the authors use examples from urban governance, energy transitions strategy, foreign investment and more to illustrate how COVID-19 has negatively or positively impacted climate data and draw wider conclusions about the long-term climate policies that may be implemented. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, environmental politics and governance and global development studies.

Children As Climate Citizens written by Kata Dozsa and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-15 with Law categories.

This book provides a socio-legal analysis of the public participation of children in climate change matters, whilst developing a range of tools through which their participation can be increased. Climate change affects young people in many ways: causing severe threats to child survival, health and wellbeing, food security and nutrition, and access to education. But this book maintains that children and youth are not to be identified solely with their vulnerability to climate change. They are also key stakeholders in the sustainable implementation of long-term climate change policies, and their inclusion in decision-making processes is a measure of intergenerational equity. Children’s rights law is vague about the right to public participation or the environmental rights of children as such. In response, this book examines the often-informal network of pathways through which the public participation of children takes place: from high level conferences and governance structures to grassroots youth movements and climate change litigation. Exploring the difficulties, but also the opportunities and aspirations of children as citizens challenging the current climate change regime, the book proposes legal and policy tools for children’s participation in global climate change governance, as it outlines a concept of children’s climate citizenship. This book will appeal to scholars in the areas of sociolegal studies, environmental and climate change law, children’s rights and social movements, as well as policy makers and young people with interests in climate activism.

2023 Catholic Media Association Honorable Mention, Faithful Citizenship/Religious Freedom Has the contemporary American polity remained capable of asking itself questions about its purpose and integrity? We recall our optimistic beginnings, sure of God’s blessing, yet something has gone wrong. We are at odds with each other and even our friends. What brought us to this moment, and is there anything “we the people” can do? In Claiming Your Voice, Vest examines four contemporary deforming patterns: market culture, American empire, climate crisis, and racism. In consideration of the Christian foundations in prophetic imagination and Benedictine spirituality, she illustrates that Americans are called to provide energy for hope, to cut through public numbness, and to penetrate the deceptions of imperial consciousness so that God and the sacred again become visible and empowering for all our people.
