"Imagine the heart-wrenching devastation that is experienced by a family when a parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease! Author Diane Currie shares her candid and personal reflections about her mother's struggle with this disease as she copes with the reality of the present but always honors the memory of her past. Through a series of moving vignettes, she remains connected with her mother in a creative way as the strong bond between them slowly dissolves as the disease progresses. From the first moment of her mother's diagnosis, Currie conveys in a captivating manner the intense feelings of loss and hopelessness one experiences when dealing with this dreadful disease. She is able to protray the subtle changes in her mother's behavior and personality throughout her decline, all in a deeply human way. While Before My Eyes describes one family's touching and painful journey, in essence Currie's reflective account may typify the Alzheimer's experience, while offering support and validation to all those who walk its arduous path"--Page 4 of cover.

Over the last ten years a number of new concepts have emerged within social psychology, gerontology, socio-linguistics and psychotherapy which present a challenge to the view of dementia as simply an organic illness. These ideas have led to service innovations including the development of support groups for people with dementia; the adaptation of psychotherapeutic approaches to this client group; and the development of methods of care evaluation from the perspective of the dementia sufferer. This book seeks to summarize these 'new' ideas thereby bringing together, for the first time, a wide range of critical thinking relating to old age and dementia. The authors aim to advance a psychological framework from which to understand the experience of dementia from the perspective of the dementia sufferer, so making intelligible the symptoms of dementia and setting out new avenues of care such as the need to adopt psychotherapeutic/counselling approaches as an integral part of care. Including background, clear argument and practical guidelines, this insightful and comprehensive study makes an important contribution to the currently emerging trend in dementia care towards person-centred work.

This book is dedicated to all of the families who have ever lost a loved one to Alzheimer's and Dementia, I have spent over Twenty five years, giving care to these mom's and dad's, who have acquired this horrible disease . I'd like to take you on my journey, and tell you about some of the experiences I've dealt with, and some of the care I've done, although some of these days, and nights were hard, and sometimes I felt like running, not to return, I hung in there because I truly felt that this is my calling in life. There were a lot of tears, fears, smiles and laughter, and no matter how sad, or how hard times got, we could always find a moment for love. I hope that you will embrace my story, and find some comfort as you read about all of the challenges I encountered, while giving care to those who could not care for themselves. May you find a little laughter, as I take you through what some of you may view as impossible to go through. But unless you truly have a heart to give this type of care, it could never be for you, it can be greatly overwhelming. But for me, it is therapy, truly therapy. And this is why there are folks like me, it is my passion, I love to care for others. I hope you enjoy, and find some comfort, smiles, and a little laughter, as you go through this journey with me. I do not wish to be disrespectful, nor offend anyone by writing these short stories of actual accounts that happened with some of the people I cared for. I'm writing in hopes of you receiving some in site on what it takes to be a great caregiver, or find one. God bless.

The dementia challenge is the largest health effort of the times we live in. The whole society has to move to a realization of the significance of prioritization to make an attempt in the direction of mental health promotion and dementia risk reduction. New priorities for research are needed to go far beyond the usual goal of constructing a disease course-modifying medication. Moreover, a full empowerment and engagement of men and women living with dementia and their caregivers, overcoming stigma and discrimination should be promoted. The common efforts and the final aim will have to be the progress of a ''dementia-constructive'' world, where people with dementia can take advantage of equal opportunities.
