Van der Graaf researches the emotional ties of residents to their deprived neighbourhood. In transforming deprived areas into great places to live much attention has been given to the physical, social and economical aspects of deprivation. However, little is known about the relationship between deprivation and emotional ties: What makes residents in deprived areas feel at home in their neighbourhood? In this PhD thesis Peter van der Graaf focused on the emotional ties of residents to their neighbourhood and researched how these ties are affected by urban renewal. He also compares practices between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where the emotions of residents are considered more in urban renewal.

De relatie tussen de gebouwde stad en stadscultuur wordt door denkers, zoals sociaal wetenschappers, en door de makers-ontwerpers van een stad, op uiteenlopende manieren verklaard en benaderd. Ondanks de professionele versnippering gebruiken beide disciplines ook vergelijkbare begrippen, die verwijzen naar mentale processen en suggereren dat de stad ‘een denkbeeld’ is. De psychologie van de stad laat, vanuit het perspectief van een stadswandeling, zien op welke manier het denkbeeld van de stad zich in ons hoofd nestelt. Hoe ‘werkt’ onze perceptie van de stad? Op welke manier slaan we ervaringen op in het geheugen? En welke betekenissen kennen we toe aan een stad? De gedragstechnologie van het brein leert dat onbewuste herinneringen vaak het beeld bepalen dat we van straten of buurten hebben. Het onbewuste zorgt er vaak voor dat menselijke keuzes niet gebaseerd zijn op rationeel, gecalculeerde inzichten. Het mag dus niet verbazen dat het ‘denkbeeld van de stad’ niet louter door ervaringen tijdens een stadswandeling tot stand komt, maar dat ook film, televisie, stripverhalen en andere visuele media hierbij een belangrijke rol spelen. Dit boek gaat dieper in op de mentale processen die het denkbeeld van een stad bepalen. Het is een prikbord voor iedereen die onderzoek wil doen naar de stad en stedelijke cultuur. Uit recent psychologisch onderzoek blijkt dat de rol van het ‘onbewuste’ een prominentere plaats heeft in het menselijk functioneren dan voorheen werd gedacht. Dit onderzoek is ook gebaseerd op het principe van het ‘wilde denken’, waarbij het uitputtend observeren en systematisch inventariseren van betrekkingen en verbindingen in wijken en buurten met een fotocamera gebeurt.

Cet ouvrage prend position face à l’opinion dominante qui considère qu’une catégorie d’individus et de groupes est dépourvue des propriétés qui font le citoyen ; plus profondément, elle leur retranche une part d’humanité. Cette mise à l’écart pose une question politique : ils/elles sont mères sans papiers, citoyens effacé(e)s en Slovénie, sourd(e)s, illettré(e)s, Tsiganes et voyageurs, personnes en situation de handicap, ou occupent plus généralement des emplois subalternes… mais, ailleurs ou ici, invisibles souvent, tous, toutes s’efforcent de vivre sinon de survivre pour les leurs et, ce faisant, créent pour la plupart une zone franche bien à eux. Car, par-delà le milieu dans lequel ils se terrent, ils agissent, attentifs, « en font plus », transformant et participant à la société. Sans eux, elle ne serait pas la même. Encore faut-il aller les voir, échanger nos confiances pour se faire accepter, partager leur secret et décrire les pratiques par lesquelles ils s’affranchissent localement des assignations qui en font des assistés, sinon des fauteurs de trouble. Ce livre montre en quoi précisément ils sont nos égaux, chaque auteur traitant du domaine ou du public dont il est spécialiste. Il est aussi remarquable que leurs contributions, les inventions surgies de leur lutte quotidienne et dont on les croyait incapables se transmettent moins par le dire, médium normatif que privilégient les dominants, que par la contagion des pratiques qui outrepassent la barrière des préjugés. Porter un autre regard sur celles et ceux qui ont été rejetés aux marges, c’est aussi considérer autrement la politique : avec eux, le mot émancipation reprend sens. J. Rancière en discute ici pour relancer la réflexion.
