Excerpt from Tidal Power: Tides and Their Measurement; The Estimation of Potential Tidal Power; Comparisons Between Systems of Development; The Financial Aspect of the Problem; Difficulties to Be Overcome; And the Lines for Development Ages ago, far back in the dim past, man must inevitably have "sensed" the enormous power embodied in the ceaseless, diurnal ebb and flow of great volumes of the sea into and out of every estuary, strait, or bay that came within his ken. Gradually, as he became master of other forces in Nature, he is certain to have pondered on the possibility of enlisting this latent power into his service, as several centuries before the Christian era commenced we find records showing that he observed intelligently the action of the tides, and commented on their connection with the phases of the moon. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such speculations took shape in "Tide Mills" run by water flowing from basins during falling tides, that had been filled by the previous rising tide. Generally, sources for power generation are broken down into two categories: thermal and non-thermal. Thermal sources for power generation include combustion, geothermal, solar, nuclear, and waste heat, which essentially provide heat as a means for power generation. This book examines non-thermal (mechanical, electrochemical, nanoscale self-powered, and hybrid) sources of power generation and emphasizes recent advances in distributed power generation systems. Key Features Details recent advances made in wind power, including onshore, offshore, fixed and floating platform, and air wind energy systems, and offers detailed assessments of progress Covers advances in generation of hydropower, exploring dam hydropower, novel wave energy converters, and novel systems and turbines for hydrokinetic energy conversion to power Examines all types of fuel cells and their multi-functional roles, along with hybrid fuel cell systems in complete detail Explores advances in the development of self-powered nanogenerators for use in portable, wearable, and implantable power electronics Focuses on technologies with the best commercial possibilities and provides perspectives on future challenges that need to be solved This book will be of value to all researchers in academia, industry, and government interested in pursuing power generation technologies and seeking a comprehensive understanding of available and emerging non-thermal power generation sources. Readers who are interested in learning about thermal power generation sources can find it in the author’s companion text Advanced Power Generation Systems: Thermal Sources (2023).

Tidal Energy Systems: Design, Optimization and Control provides a comprehensive overview of concepts, technologies, management and the control of tidal energy systems and tidal power plants. It presents the fundamentals of tidal energy, including the structure of tidal currents and turbulence. Technology, principles, components, operation, and a performance assessment of each component are also covered. Other sections consider pre-feasibility analysis methods, plant operation, maintenance and power generation, reliability assessment in terms of failure distribution, constant failure rate and the time dependent failure model. Finally, the most recent research advances and future trends are reviewed. In addition, applicable real-life examples and a case study of India’s tidal energy scenario are included. The book provides ocean energy researchers, practitioners and graduate students with all the information needed to design, deploy, manage and operate tidal energy systems. Senior undergraduate students will also find this to be a useful resource on the fundamentals of tidal energy systems and their components. Presents the fundamentals of tidal energy, including system components, pre-feasibility analysis, and plant management, operations and control Explores concepts of sustainability and a reliability analysis of tidal energy systems, as well as their economic aspects and future trends Covers the assessment of tidal energy systems by optimization technique and game theory

Increasing renewable energy development, both within the United States and abroad, has rekindled interest in the potential for marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) resources to contribute to electricity generation. These resources derive from ocean tides, waves, and currents; temperature gradients in the ocean; and free-flowing rivers and streams. One measure of the interest in the possible use of these resources for electricity generation is the increasing number of permits that have been filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). As of December 2012, FERC had issued 4 licenses and 84 preliminary permits, up from virtually zero a decade ago. However, most of these permits are for developments along the Mississippi River, and the actual benefit realized from all MHK resources is extremely small. The first U.S. commercial gridconnected project, a tidal project in Maine with a capacity of less than 1 megawatt (MW), is currently delivering a fraction of that power to the grid and is due to be fully installed in 2013. As part of its assessment of MHK resources, DOE asked the National Research Council (NRC) to provide detailed evaluations. In response, the NRC formed the Committee on Marine Hydrokinetic Energy Technology Assessment. As directed in its statement of task (SOT), the committee first developed an interim report, released in June 2011, which focused on the wave and tidal resource assessments (Appendix B). The current report contains the committee's evaluation of all five of the DOE resource categories as well as the committee's comments on the overall MHK resource assessment process. This summary focuses on the committee's overarching findings and conclusions regarding a conceptual framework for developing the resource assessments, the aggregation of results into a single number, and the consistency across and coordination between the individual resource assessments. Critiques of the individual resource assessment, further discussion of the practical MHK resource base, and overarching conclusions and recommendations are explained in An Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Energy's Marine and Hydrokinetic Resource Assessment.
