Tiddlywinks began as an 18th century Victorian parlor game and was trademarked as Tiddledy-Winks in 1889. Immediately popular other game publishers came out with their own versions of the game using other names, including Spoof, Flipperty Flop, Jumpkins, Golfette, Maro, Flutter, and many others. It was one of the most popular games of the 1890s, played by adults and children alike. The modern game began in 1955 when a group of Cambridge University undergraduates devised a sport in which they could represent the university. The Oxford University Tiddlywinks Society was soon formed; and by the 1960s as many as 37 universities were playing the game in Britain and the United States. This long popularity and the simple elements of squidger, wink and pot have led to a rich variety of game pieces, game boards and packaging. Tiddlywinks is a compelling microcosmic history of game board design and general graphic design and typography in the 20th Century. Author Hedi Geffen, long a collector of Tiddlywinks games, has opened up her collection and penned a compelling history of the game.
