Ancient Greeks endeavored to define the human being vis-à-vis other animal species by isolating capacities and endowments which they considered to be unique to humans. This approach toward defining the human being still appears with surprising frequency, in modern philosophical treatises, in modern animal behavioral studies, and in animal rights literature, to argue both for and against the position that human beings are special and unique because of one or another attribute or skill that they are believed to possess. Some of the claims of man’s unique endowments have in recent years become the subject of intensive investigation by cognitive ethologists carried out in non-laboratory contexts. The debate is as lively now as in classical times, and, what is of particular note, the examples and methods of argumentation used to prove one or another position on any issue relating to the unique status of human beings that one encounters in contemporary philosophical or ethological literature frequently recall ancient precedents. This is the first book-length study of the ‘man alone of animals’ topos in classical literature, not restricting its analysis to Greco-Roman claims of man’s intellectual uniqueness, but including classical assertions of man’s physiological and emotional uniqueness. It supplements this analysis of ancient manifestations with an examination of how the commonplace survives and has been restated, transformed, and extended in contemporary ethological literature and in the literature of the animal rights and animal welfare movements. Author Stephen T. Newmyer demonstrates that the anthropocentrism detected in Greek applications of the ‘man alone of animals’ topos is not only alive and well in many facets of the current debate on human-animal relations, but that combating its negative effects is a stated aim of some modern philosophers and activists.

Anthropocentrism and Its Discontents is the first-ever comprehensive examination of views of animals in the history of Western philosophy, from Homeric Greece to the twentieth century. In recent decades, increased interest in this area has been accompanied by scholars' willingness to conceive of animal experience in terms of human mental capacities: consciousness, self-awareness, intention, deliberation, and in some instances, at least limited moral agency. This conception has been facilitated by a shift from behavioral to cognitive ethology (the science of animal behavior), and by attempts to affirm the essential similarities between the psychophysical makeup of human beings and animals. Gary Steiner sketches the terms of the current debates about animals and relates these to their historical antecedents, focusing on both the dominant anthropocentric voices and those recurring voices that instead assert a fundamental kinship relation between human beings and animals. He concludes with a discussion of the problem of balancing the need to recognize a human indebtedness to animals and the natural world with the need to preserve a sense of the uniqueness and dignity of the human individual.

Welche Stellung schreibt der Mensch sich selbst zu? Vorrangig dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Arbeit nach. Ist der Mensch das höchste Wesen der Natur und wenn ja, wie begründet man diesen selbstbewussten Ansatz auf philosophischer Ebene? Wo liegt der Ursprung, dass der Mensch sich begreift, als das, was er ist? Und wenn der Mensch das höchste Wesen ist, ist die Welt und der Kosmos nur zu seinem Zweck geschaffen? Diese Fragen sollen im Zusammenhang mit der Tier- und Naturethik genauer konkretisiert und diskutiert werden. Dazu sollen die Ansichten von Hesiod, den Vorsokraten, Protagoras, Platon sowie die Theorien der Stoischen Vertreter mit einbezogen werden. So wie der Mensch sich selbst begreift, so wird er auch mit der Natur, also den Tieren und Pflanzen umgehen. Die frühchristlichen Autoren, mit ihrem Bezug auf die Bibel, werden nicht mit aufgeführt, da dies den Umfang bei weitem übersteigen würde. Hesiod beschreibt als erster Philosoph den Ursprung der Entstehung des Menschen. Er setzt diesen auf eine hohe Ebene zu den Göttern mit der Begründung, dass der Mensch allein von Gott beziehungsweise von Zeus geschaffen ist. „Damals waren gemeinsam das Mahl und gemeinsam die Sitze den unsterblichen Göttern sowie den sterblichen Menschen“ Dieser paradiesähnliche Zustand brachte allerdings Probleme mit sich. Der Mensch ist nicht dazu gezwungen, seine von Gott gegebenen Fähigkeiten zu nutzen, da er im „Schoße“ der Gottheiten leben kann. Jede geistige sowie körperliche Anstrengung scheint sinnlos, da es keinen bedingten Anlass dazu gibt. Der materielle Überfluss durch Gott ist also der Grund der völligen Stagnation. Man kann sagen, dass der Mensch in diesem Zustand kein kulturell schaffendes Wesen ist, da genau die Zwänge, die ein Wesen zu einem kulturellen Wesen machen, zum Beispiel Arbeitsanstrengungen, Entwicklungen geistiger, moralischer und technischer Konzepte sowie Leistung durch die göttlichen Gaben und das Zusammenleben mit den höheren Wesen verwehrt bleiben.
