‘Key to understanding Black British history’ – The Sunday Times ‘Sharp and still relevant’ – Zadie Smith One of the great poets of modern times, and a deeply respected political and cultural activist and social critic, Linton Kwesi Johnson is also a prolific writer of non-fiction. In Time Come, he selects some of his most powerful prose – book and music reviews published in newspapers and magazines, lectures, obituaries and speeches – for the first time. Written over many decades, these works draw on Johnson’s own Jamaican roots and on Caribbean history to explore the politics of race that continue to inform the Black British experience. Ranging from reflections on the place of music in Caribbean and Black British culture as a creative, defiant response to oppression, to penetrating appraisals of novels, films, poems and plays, and including warm tributes paid to the activists and artists who inspired him to contribute to the struggle for racial equality and social justice, Time Come is a panorama of an exceptional life. Venturing into memoir, it underscores Johnson’s enduring importance in Britain’s cultural history and reminds us of his brilliant, unparalleled legacy. With an introduction by Paul Gilroy, author of There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack. ‘A mosaic of wise, urgent and moving pieces’ – Kit de Waal ‘As necessary as ever’ – The Observer ‘A book to be savoured and re-read’ – Derek Owusu ‘An outstanding collection’ – Caryl Phillips ‘A necessary book from a writer who continues to inspire’ – Yomi Sode ‘Incisive, engaging, fearless’ – Gary Younge

Your Time Will Come written by Lawrence M. Friedman and has been published by Russell Sage Foundation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985-06-07 with Law categories.

Age discrimination and its corollary, mandatory retirement, are modern legal issues, barely a generation old. In this concise and readable report, Lawrence Friedman explores the apparently sudden emergence of a field of law that pertains mainly to the elderly and middle-aged. Friedman traces the brief but fascinating social, legislative, and judicial history of age discrimination law and of the laws addressing mandatory retirement. Both histories contain paradoxes and contradictions; both seem simultaneously to make an issue of "age" and to demand a kind of age neutrality, reflecting broad recent changes in American culture. Both histories are intricately bound up with other legal issues—age discrimination with race and sex discrimination; mandatory retirement with the development of pension plans and other social insurance systems. Friedman speculates on the impact of these new laws, illuminating through his analysis the complex phenomenon of "legalization," or the penetration of legal norms into ever more areas of life. Finally, Friedman offers a provocative conclusion in which he suggests that laws on age discrimination and retirement—laws that appear to have a less extensive social background than one would expect—may in fact be "stand-in" laws for vague but powerful social norms not yet recognized in the legal system. Your Time Will Come is the first new volume in a special paperback series entitled Social Research Perspectives: Occasional Reports on Current Topics. These Perspectives represent a revival of the Social Science Frontiers series published by the Foundation from 1969 to 1977 and will again offer short, timely, and accessible reports on various aspects of social science research. A Volume in the Russell Sage Foundation's Social Science Perspectives Series

My Time Will Come written by Ian Manuel and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The inspiring story of activist and poet Ian Manuel, who at the age of fourteen was sentenced to life in prison. He survived eighteen years in solitary confinement—through his own determination and dedication to art—until he was freed as part of an incredible crusade by the Equal Justice Initiative. “Ian is magic. His story is difficult and heartbreaking, but he takes us places we need to go to understand why we must do better. He survives by relying on a poetic spirit, an unrelenting desire to succeed, to recover, and to love. Ian’s story says something hopeful about our future.” —Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy The United States is the only country in the world that sentences thirteen- and fourteen-year-old offenders, mostly youth of color, to life in prison without parole. In 1991, Ian Manuel, then fourteen, was sentenced to life without parole for a non-homicide crime. In a botched mugging attempt with some older boys, he shot a young white mother of two in the face. But as Bryan Stevenson, attorney and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, has insisted, none of us should be judged by only the worst thing we have ever done. Capturing the fullness of his humanity, here is Manuel’s powerful testimony of growing up homeless in a neighborhood riddled with poverty, gang violence, and drug abuse—and of his efforts to rise above his circumstances, only to find himself, partly through his own actions, imprisoned for two-thirds of his life, eighteen years of which were spent in solitary confinement. Here is the story of how he endured the savagery of the United States prison system, and how his victim, an extraordinary woman, forgave him and bravely advocated for his freedom, which was achieved by an Equal Justice Initiative push to address the barbarism of our judicial system and bring about “just mercy.” Full of unexpected twists and turns as it describes a struggle for redemption, My Time Will Come is a paean to the capacity of the human will to transcend adversity through determination and art—in Ian Manuel’s case, through his dedication to writing poetry.

Theo Olonia discusses how, with awareness, we can weigh our actions for the consequences and impact they have on the environment and on life in general. He: ? presents a scientific view of the creation of the universe, describing the formation and evolution of the solar system; ? explains the evolution of our home world through four and a half billion years, including the evolution of humanity; ? describes how wild places are in serious decline and the adverse affect it has on indigenous wild life; ? addresses how we are controlled by our social order, which directly affects the choices we make with respect to the environment; ? discusses the modalities that helped turn his life around, making him more aware and conscious of every aspect of living; ? reviews some of the possible outcomes based on today's choices; an ? offers a new concept of how to relate to Earth-Mother. Now is the Time for All Good Men to Come to the Aid of Their Planet communicates that how we relate today sets the historical course of being stewards of our world, taking what we need with awareness and gratitude, but also giving back to maintain a sustainable, viable world.
