Expands our understanding of Alois Riegl beyond his role as an art historian to a pivotal figure in cultural theory at large, while placing his interest in history and time within the intellectual world of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Alois Riegl's art history has influenced thinkers as diverse as Erwin Panofsky, Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, Paul Feyerabend, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari. One of the founders of the modern discipline of art history, Riegl is best known for his theories of representation. Yet his inquiries into the role of temporality in artistic production--including his argument that art conveys a culture's consciousness of time--show him to be a more wide-ranging and influential commentator on historiographical issues than has been previously acknowledged. In Time's Visible Surface, Michael Gubser presents Riegl's work as a sustained examination of the categories of temporality and history in art. Supported by a rich exploration of Riegl's writings, Gubser argues that Riegl viewed artworks as registering historical time visibly in artistic forms. Gubser's discussion of Riegl's academic milieu also challenges the widespread belief that Austrian modernism adopted a self-consciously ahistorical worldview. By analyzing the works of Riegl's professors and colleagues at the University of Vienna, Gubser shows that Riegl's interest in temporality, from his early articles on calendar art through later volumes on the Roman art industry and Dutch portraiture, fit into a broad discourse on time, history, and empiricism that engaged Viennese thinkers such as the philosopher Franz Brentano, the historian Theodor von Sickel, and the art historian Franz Wickhoff. By expanding our understanding of Riegl and his intellectual context, Time's Visible Surface demonstrates that Riegl is a pivotal figure in cultural theory and that fin-de-siècle Vienna holds continued relevance for today's cultural and philosophical debates.

The Geometry Of Biological Time written by Arthur T. Winfree and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Mathematics categories.
Geometry of Biological Time deals with dynamics of processes that repeat themselves regularly. Such rhythmic return through a cycle of change is an ubiquitous principle of organization in living systems. In this revised and updated edition the author plans to extend the thread from 1980 to the present concentrating on areas which he personally feels have been interesting and where he feels there will be much activity in the future. This involves going through spatial biochemical, electrophysiological, and organismic dynamical systems and patterns that were discovered by pursuing the theme of phase singularities that the original book introduced. In particular the work on excitability in cell membranes has been thoroughly updated as have the references throughout the book.

Spontaneous Current Sheets In Magnetic Fields written by Eugene N. Parker and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-07-21 with Science categories.
Expanding upon the ideas first proposed in his seminal book Cosmical Magnetic Fields, Eugene N. Parker here offers the first in-depth treatment of the magnetohydrodynamic theory of spontaneous magnetic discontinuities. In detailing his theory of the spontaneous formation of tangential discontinuities (current sheets) in a magnetic field embedded in highly conducting plasma, Parker shows how it can be used to explain the activity of the external magnetic fields of planets, stars, interstellar gas clouds, and galaxies, as well as the magnetic fields in laboratory plasmas. Provocative and fascinating, Spontaneous Current Sheets in Magnetic Fields presents a bold new theory that will excite interest and discussion throughout the space physics community.

Mineral building materials and regionally related methods of processing are an essential part of building culture throughout the Himalayas. Based on transregional knowledge transfer, raw materials have been able to find an ecologically and economically optimised destiny in particular local applications. For this study, samples were collected as raw material or originated from certain building components. Samples were analysed according to their material properties and architectural application. Traditional building techniques were examined and their correlation with traceable material qualities studied. Clay-specific properties such as colour, grain size distribution, grain shape, hardness, plasticity, organic additives, or bulk and clay mineral properties were used as comparative parameters. This study gives fresh insight into the interaction between technical requirements, environmental resources and material implementation. It is the first scientific approach in studying the Himalayan earthen heritage in a wide scope and connecting material research and cultural heritage from various perspectives - in particular archaeology, architecture, research on materials and building techniques.

The Logical Structure Of The World written by Rudolf Carnap and has been published by Open Court Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Philosophy categories.
Available for the first time in 20 years, here are two important works from the 1920s by the best-known representative of the Vienna Circle. In The Logical Structure of the World, Carnap adopts the position of "methodological solipsism" and shows that it is possible to describe the world from the immediate data of experience. In his Pseudoproblems in Philosophy, he asserts that many philosophical problems are meaningless.

The Physical Effects Of Conventional Explosions On The Ocean Environment written by George Anthony Young and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1970 with Explosives, Military categories.
Current knowledge of the physical effects of underwater explosions on the environment is summarized, with particular attention to the heating of water, the mixing of explosion products with water, and cratering. Theory and data indicate that thermal effects on the environment are negligible because rapid turbulent mixing reduces any temperature excess to a negligible amount within minutes. Virtually no data are available on the mixing of explosion products with water and air. However, information on the bubble and surface phenomena of underwater explosions has been utilized to provide qualitative guidance concerning the distributions immediately after a test. Existing theories of turbulent diffusion can be applied to calculate the subsequent history of the products. Knowledge of the physical effects of bottom explosions on the environment is limited to crater measurements in shallow water and some data on the behavior of explosion bubbles in deep water. Suggested programs to fill gaps in current knowledge are outlined. (Author).
