An Automated Real Time Storm Analysis And Storm Tracking Program Weatrk written by Carlton J. Bjerkaas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Automatic meteorological stations categories.
The evolution of the WEATRK system is described from the original software obtained under contract in 1977, to the present software configuration. The various portions of the software are discussed with emphasis on the algorithms used to determine storm significance and establish the storm track. Results of the two-year development effort and operational tests show the usefulness of assimilating large amounts of complex data and generating a computer-synthesized product easily used in forecast applications. The error analysis performed on the storm track forecast accuracy suggests that few of the errors encountered are due to meteorological effects but they are largely due to parameters such as beam width, pulse width, antenna rotation rate and rounding errors. The non-meteorological errors appear to average out over large data sets; that is, the longer the storm track the smaller the forecast error. Although the program now uses a three-dimensional analysis, very little analysis is performed on the velocity and variance fields. The usefulness of these fields along with other improvements are considered.

An Atlas Of The Midlatitude F Region Response To Geomagnetic Storms written by Michael Mendillo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1974 with Electron distribution categories.
The ionospheric response to 75 geomagnetic storms has been examined using total electron content (TEC) data obtained at Hamilton, Massachusetts (42.6N, 70.8W). Simultaneous measurements of the F2-region critical frequency (N(max)) and equivalent slab thickness (tau = TEC/N(max)) to be monitored during the same events. Both graphical and tabulated formats were used to present the response of the parameters for five days of each storm period. This broad data base should provide a unique source for examining the variety of possible storm effects, for testing storm models, and for comparison with the storm effects observed at other locations. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The riveting true story of the Galveston hurricane of 1900, still the deadliest natural disaster in American history—from the acclaimed author of The Devil in the White City “A gripping account ... fascinating to its core, and all the more compelling for being true.” —The New York Times Book Review September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over six thousand people—and Isaac Cline found himself the victim of a devastating personal tragedy. Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude.

2020 Museum of African American History Stone Book Award 2020 Lillian Smith Book Award Finalist, 2020 Pauli Murray Book Prize For generations, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been essential institutions for the African American community. Their nurturing environments not only provided educational advancement but also catalyzed the Black freedom struggle, forever altering the political destiny of the United States. In this book, Jelani M. Favors offers a history of HBCUs from the 1837 founding of Cheyney State University to the present, told through the lens of how they fostered student activism. Favors chronicles the development and significance of HBCUs through stories from institutions such as Cheyney State University, Tougaloo College, Bennett College, Alabama State University, Jackson State University, Southern University, and North Carolina A&T. He demonstrates how HBCUs became a refuge during the oppression of the Jim Crow era and illustrates the central role their campus communities played during the civil rights and Black Power movements. Throughout this definitive history of how HBCUs became a vital seedbed for politicians, community leaders, reformers, and activists, Favors emphasizes what he calls an unwritten “second curriculum” at HBCUs, one that offered students a grounding in idealism, racial consciousness, and cultural nationalism.

The frequency and severity of tornadoes, hurricanes, tropical storms, thunderstorms, blizzards, ice storms, dust storms, and cyclones have all increased around the globe. Scientists have found evidence that these storms are likely triggered by an overall warming of the planet, due largely to human activity, particularly the burning of heat-trapping fossil fuels. Readers will survey the scope of the problem, learn about the mechanisms at work behind storms of increasing frequency and intensity, see the outlined steps being taken to combat the global warming that promotes intense storms, and learn about the cutting-edge technologies being developed to secure our homes, offices, and other buildings and structures as well as protect the human lives they contain.
Meteorology Of Flood Producing Storms In The Mississippi River Basin

Meteorology Of Flood Producing Storms In The Mississippi River Basin written by George A. Lott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1956 with Floods categories.
This report is primarily concerned with intensive precipitation falling as rain over the central part of the Mississippi River Basin during the months of January through July. Other precipitation in the Basin is relatively ineffective in producing floods on the main stem. Snow melt is not negligible in Mississippi floods but has never been the primary cause of a historical Lower Mississippi flood. Major floods are not experienced from August to December because the ground, dried during the summer, has an accumulated capacity to soak up water; any hypothetical flood between August and December would be overshadowed for design purposes by a hypothetical flood of the same likelihood of occurrence between January and July. The latter would be drastically more severe.
