The nature of time has always been one of the most fascinating and perplexing problems of philosophy; it has in recent years become the focus of vigorous debate between advocates of rival theories. The problem of how humans and other intelligent systems construct causal representations from non-causal perceptual evidence has occupied scholars in cognitive science for many decades. Most contemporary approaches agree with David Hume that patterns of covariation between two events of interest are the critical input to the causal induction engine, irrespective of whether this induction is believed to be grounded in the formation of associations (Shanks & Dickinson, 1987), rule-based evaluation (White, 2004), appraisal of causal powers (Cheng, 1997), or construction of Bayesian Causal Networks (Pearl, 2000). Recent research, however, has repeatedly demonstrated that an exclusive focus on covariation while neglecting contiguity (another of Hume’s cues) results in ecologically invalid models of causal inference. Temporal spacing, order, variability, predictability, and patterning all have profound influence on the type of causal representation that is constructed. The influence of time upon causal representations could be seen as a bottom-up constraint (though current bottom-up models cannot account for the full spectrum of effects). However, causal representations in turn also constrain the perception of time: Put simply, two causally related events appear closer in subjective time than two (equidistant) unrelated events. This reversal of Hume’s conjecture, referred to as Causal Binding (Buehner & Humphreys, 2009) is a top-down constraint, and suggests that our representations of time and causality are mutually influencing one another. At present, the theoretical implications of this phenomenon are not yet fully understood. Some accounts link it exclusively to human motor planning (appealing to mechanisms of cross-modal temporal adaptation, or forward learning models of motor control). However, recent demonstrations of causal binding in the absence of human action, and analogous binding effects in the visual spatial domain, challenge such accounts in favour of Bayesian Evidence Integration. This Research Topic reviews and further explores the nature of the mutual influence between time and causality, how causal knowledge is constructed in the context of time, and how it in turn shapes and alters our perception of time. We draw together literatures from the perception and cognitive science, as well as experimental and theoretical papers. Contributions investigate the neural bases of binding and causal learning/perception, methodological advances, and functional implications of causal learning and perception in real time.

The Philosophy of Time Society grew out of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar on the Philosophy of Time offered by George Schlesinger in 1991. The members of that seminar wanted to promote interest in the philosophy of time and Jon N. Turgerson offered to become the first Director of the society with the initial costs underwritten by the Drake University Center for the Humanities. Thus, the Philosophy of Time Society (PTS) was formed in 1993. Its goal is to promote the study of the philosophy of time from a broad analytic perspective, and to provide a forum as an affiliated group with the American Philosophical Association, to discuss the issues in and related to the philosophy of time. The society held its first meeting during the Eastern Division of the AP A in Atlanta, George, in December 1993. In 1997 I began my tenure as Executive Director of PTS and with my term ending in 2000, I decided to put together a volume of selected papers read at PTS meetings over the years. The result is the present volume. It contains some of the latest developments in the field, including discussions of recent books by Michael Tooley, Time, Tense, and Causation, and D. H. Mellor, Real Time II, and much more. The main issue in the philosophy of time is and remains the status of temporal becoming and the passage of time.

In this thesis I combine a definition of time-travel with issues in the philosophy of the direction of time and causation. I undertake some conceptual analysis of the notion of time-travel and I then ask what implications about time we must accept given the definition of time-travel that I have proposed. I then offer a new way of representing the taxonomy of views on time, and I argue that A-theoretic views (which I define as those that are realist about the moving present) are incoherent. In doing so, I pay particular attention to McTaggart's paradox and some analogues of it. Furthermore, I show that A-theoretic views are incompatible with my definition of time-travel, and that the problematic feature is the A-theorists' commitments surrounding the ordering of time, and the moving present. I show that it is the A- versus B-theoretic dispute, and not the Eternalist versus Presentist dispute, that is most relevant to time-travel debates. This leads me to a discussion on the philosophy of the direction of time. I argue that there is no way to objectively pick out one of the two directions in time as the privileged direction of time, and that the direction of time is given by convention only. I reject the thermodynamic/entropic account of the direction of time, and endorse a causal account on which the direction of time and the direction of causation cannot come apart. Additionally, I appeal to psychological features of agents in time (such as memory accumulation) to account for the assignment of a direction to time, and for the experience of a passage of time. I then show that direction of time plays a crucial role in time-travel stories, and that on my combination of a causal theory with a psychological or memory accumulation theory we can give a tidy account of what is happening with time in time-travel stories.
