The purpose of this book is to change thinking about crises and risk. Risk management is today both a great success, an impressive achievement, and a notable failure. It works, and it doesn't work. It saves lives and property, and it fails to save lives and property. It helps and it hinders. Like all such management approaches, this has a lot to do with how it is employed and practiced, but in the case of risk management there is also a much more fundamental issue. The risk management framework, the risk management model, is wrong. Many organisations today treat all risks as point events, when the real risks involve systemic threats inherent in the global economy, and the uncertain nature of global society.The book argues that risk management has come a long way, but that evidence of its more recent failure is now all around us and that it needs to now change dramatically if it is to accommodate current realities. Whilst there is a clear need for us all to manage risk through a crisis, there is a lack of understanding of the nature of crises that is impeding progress. The global financial crisis hit the world in a remarkable way in late 2008. Many governments and private sector organizations, who had considered Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to be their future, were forced to rethink their strategy in the wake of the crisis, as a lot of the available private funding upon which PPPs relied, was suddenly no longer available to the same extent. At the same time, governments and international organizations, like the European Union, were striving to make closer partnerships between the public sector and the private sector economy a hallmark for future policy initiatives. This book examines PPPs in the context of turbulent times following the global financial crisis (GFC). Planetary warming and climate change are, therefore, unfolding rapidly. This enveloping process is driven forward by the mutual ruptures of a deteriorating earth system and fossil based global capitalism, as a fraught socioecological totality. Overlapping crises of time are the net result. They involve, the recurring, myopic volatility of financialised capitalism, the ecological impossibility of sustaining capitalist growth, the spreading arrhythmias of biotic, animal, bird, insect and marine life and the irremediable psychological stresses of climate change anxiety. The time crises of global capitalism originate from certain disjunctures of time associated with carbon extractivism, carbon emission markets and official climate change projections. The book sets out the counter constructions of time necessary to energise the climate justice movement and advance ecosocialist principles.

The Covid-19 crisis, with all the horrors it has caused, has offered humanity an opportunity to reflect on itself and evaluate its point, even if it is delayed. In a very short time, we found ourselves worried about whether we could reach the objects we needed, whether we would lose our jobs or keep our freedom. Alienation is described as withdrawing or separation of a person or a person's affections from an object or position of former attachment: alienation viewed as a sense of detachment from the values of one's society, family, and even from one's own feelings from the values of one's society and family (S. L. Halleck). Different forms of alienation, such as cultural alienation, professional alienation, and religious alienation, are among the current issues. It is obvious that we need to define different forms of alienation along with the pandemic. I believe this book will not be the first nor the last research book published on the Covid-19 pandemic. Our aim is to leave a resource on the subject for the next generation of researchers. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the book and hope it will be beneficial for the academic community.
