The U.S. government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. The North Vietnamese government viewed the war as a colonial war, fought initially against France, backed by the U.S., and later against South Vietnam, which is regarded as a U.S. puppet state. U.S. military advisors arrived beginning in 1950. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s, with U.S. troop levels tripling in 1961 and tripling again in 1962. U.S. combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Operations spanned borders, with Laos and Cambodia heavily bombed. Involvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. After this, U.S. ground forces were withdrawn as part of a policy called Vietnamization. Despite the Paris Peace Accords, signed by all parties in January 1973, fighting continued. Vietnam was the center of the universe during the years 1965 - 1973. Throughout that period American units fought Communist-backed liberation forces over patches of ground neither side intended to hold, for a people who did not understand their place on the world stage, in a time lacking moral imperatives. Our political leadership failed to recognize it was America's soul that was at stake.

The Vietnam War was the prolonged struggle between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States (with the aid of the South Vietnamese) attempting to prevent the spread of communism. Engaged in a war that many viewed as having no way to win, U.S. leaders lost the American public's support for the war. Since the end of the war, the Vietnam War has become a benchmark for what not to do in all future U.S. foreign conflicts. This book includes: - The August Revolution (August 19, 1945) - The Battle of Ap Bac (January 2, 1963) - The Self-Immolation of Thích Quảng Đức (May 8, 1963) - The Gulf of Tonkin Incident (August 2, 1964) - The Viet Cong attack on Camp Holloway (February 7, 1965) - The Protest March on the Pentagon (October 21, 1967) - The Tet Offensive (January 31, 1968) - The Battle of Hamburger Hill (May 10, 1969) - The Operation Linebacker (May 9, 1972)

The Viet Cong (Vietnamese: Việt Cộng, officially known as the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam (Vietnamese: Mặt trận Dân tộc Giải phóng Miền Nam Việt Nam), was an armed communist political revolutionary organization in South Vietnam and Cambodia. Its military force, the Liberation Army of South Vietnam (LASV), fought against the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War, eventually emerging on the winning side. The LASV had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized peasants in the territory the Viet Cong controlled. During the war, communist insurgents and anti-war activists claimed that the Viet Cong was an insurgency indigenous to the South, while the U.S. and South Vietnamese governments portrayed the group as a tool of North Vietnam. This book is the story of how dedicated insurgents, beginning from a zero power base in rural villages, built a revolutionary movement that ultimately defeated the South Vietnamese government and its ally, the United States. The insurgents themselves--the Viet Cong--tell their story. They tell it through their numerous internal documents, interrogation reports of prisoners, interviews of defectors. Villagers contribute to the saga of this power struggle with their eye-witness accounts.

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, spanned from November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975, and took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The conflict was officially between North and South Vietnam and was part of the broader Indochina Wars. North Vietnam received support from the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies, while the US, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand, and other anti-communist nations backed South Vietnam. Lasting over two decades, the war has been characterized by some as a Cold War-era proxy war. It included not only the battle in Vietnam but also the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, leading to all three countries becoming communist states by 1975. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the First Indochina War, which involved the French colonial administration against the Viet Minh, a left-wing revolutionary force. After the French forces' departure from Indochina in 1954, the United States assumed financial and military support for the South Vietnamese government. The Viet Cong (VC), also known as the National Liberation Front (NLF), emerged in South Vietnam as a common front and began a guerrilla campaign, with guidance from North Vietnam. North Vietnam invaded Laos in the mid-1950s to support the insurgents and constructed the Ho Chi Minh Trail for supplying and reinforcing the Viet Cong. Under President John F. Kennedy's Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) program, US involvement escalated from fewer than a thousand military advisors in 1959 to 23,000 in 1964. By 1963, North Vietnam had sent 40,000 troops to fight in South Vietnam.

SAIGON, South Vietnam, Nov. 16-In the largest South Vietnamese military hospital, which is considered the best, there are 1,800 beds for nearly 4,000 patients, so some men must sleep on verandas and others on the floor. The continuing casualties among South Vietnamese troops are the reason for the overcrowding at Cong Hoa Hospital, which is in a Saigon suburb. This landmark book describes, in part, the hasty departure of American troops from Vietnam but is timely now as America again is challenged with multiple global conflicts. It is a gripping real-time account of the anger, resistance, and resilience forged in one man by the horrors of Vietnam witnessed up close, in graphically human terms, touching on mistakes that were made then and which our country continues to make today. All Americans should read this important piece of history, bound to leave them with chills. The author served in Vietnam as an Operating Room Specialist for the United States Army and left on the last day of American withdrawal. He is now a nationally renowned practicing attorney in Austin, Texas. He is a former President of the American Bar Foundation and State Bar of Texas and served on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association.
