In earlier times, for the Chinese, Korea was 'the country of courteous people from the east', and for westerners 'the land of the morning calm' or 'hermit kingdom'. In this fascinating collection of writings on times past in Korea the author helps to lift the veil on this once closed country, providing the reader with a wide selection of first-hand accounts by travellers who 'discovered' Korea - some as snapshots by those passing through, others more detailed evaluations of Korean culture and everyday life by those who spent time there. The collection covers a period of over 400 years - from Hendrik Hamel's journal of the 1600s to early 20th century records, such as Roy C. Andrew's 1918 published account of his expedition, entitled Exploring Unknown Corners of the 'Hermit Kingdom'.

A History Of The Korean People In Modern Times written by Robert Tarbell Oliver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with History categories.

An objectively balanced history of Korea during the development of its modernization - from about 1800 to the present - this book emphasizes the character, beliefs, and sentiments of the people and the personalities and careers of their pivotal leaders. The history narrates the struggles of Koreans to resist imperialistic pressures exerted against the "strategic heart of northeast Asia" by Japan, China, Russia, and England. It also examines, in particular detail, the sometimes helpful and sometimes hurtful role of the United States - Korea's most influential and most reluctant ally. What is Korea, who are Koreans, and what are they really like? South Korea has set the pattern for emergence from poverty to prosperity, from endemic disease to healthfulness, and from general illiteracy to universal education. A 1992 study by a U.S. testing service found that elementary students of South Korea ranked first in both science and mathematics among the ten most "advanced nations" of the world. These achievements, not accidental, account for the success of Korea, which may be called a modern miracle. During the past two hundred years of Korea's modernization period, the Korean people have displayed strength and courage by preserving their nationalism and special culture in the face of surrounding and stronger nations. For instance, when Japan colonized Korea from 1910 to 1945 and attempted to "Japanize" its conquest, the Korean people held fast to their own traditions. Indeed, against all imperialistic enemies, Korea sought to protect itself by becoming a tightly isolated Hermit Kingdom. In the years of Japanese rule of Korea, the Indian poet Tagore wrote, "Korea, once a bright light in thegolden age of Asia, if it is to be relit, will be again the light of the East". His words were prophetic. Not only has Korea distinguished itself in the area of social reform; it has emerged as a fountainhead of Asian culture. The inspirational leadership of ethical philosophers and the village Silhak movement have met the modernizing influence of Christian missionaries and Western commercialization to guide the Korean people toward informed, self-reliant democracy. In A History of the Korean People in Modern Times, Robert T. Oliver vividly chronicles the full scope and progress of Korea - from its near-primitive beginnings to present-day prosperity. The pages of the volume are alive with accounts of individuals, ranging from political and intellectual leaders to peasants and workers, whose combined efforts reflect and illustrate the nature of the Korean people.

During its five thousand years of history and culture, Korea has been attacked and invaded by other countries eight hundred times. Despite all its past tragedies, Korea has risen from the ashes and become one of the ten strongest economic countries in the world-all because its people have kept their thoughts, culture, and roots alive. In "Korean Thought and Culture: A New Introduction, " Dr. Chai-Shin Yu shares the results of his extensive research. He offers careful interpretation of historical facts and in-depth exploration of past events, while determining whether Old-Korean thought culture has always existed independently or arose initially through the sole influence of China. A seasoned lecturer on Korean culture and thought, Dr. Yu relies on his professional experience to provide a comprehensive study of Korean and East Asian thought and culture, the influence of Korea on Japanese culture, Korean philosophers, and other Asian and Christian thoughts and cultures. One hundred years since the Japanese invasion and sixty years after the attack of North Korea, "Korean Thought and Culture: A New Introduction" offers a new perspective on long-held beliefs and challenges anyone to take a new look at Korean thought and the history and culture of this fascinating country.

Vivid and picturesque description of Korea in the dawn of the 20th century. Written by Rev. Jacob Robert Moose (1864-1928), an American missionary, who came to Korea in 1989 to serve the Korean mission fields for 25 years. Readers will be amused by the vitality of Korea depicted with love and affection a century ago. Village Life in Korea While one may find no less than a handful of books about Korea written in the turn of the century, Village Life in Korea written by Rev. Moose uniquely stands out for its empathetic storytelling of the commoners' life in Korean villages, drawn on the author's firsthand experience acquired among the people of Korea in the villages far removed from the outer world. The book tells a story on Korea and its people in such a way that the author shares it with a company composed of men, women, and children who are anxious to learn more about the untold stories of the nation which had been often referred to as the Hermit Kingdom until the late 19th century. After an insightful introduction to Korea in the opening chapters, • Geographical Sketch • Resources • Historical Sketch • The Capital the book begins to unroll its story on the village life. • The Village • The Village Family • The Village Inn The book, then, moves on to tell stories on the village people, so vividly that, while reading the next chapters, one may feel as if they were visiting the village back in time. • The Village Boy • The Village Gentleman • The Village Girl • The Village Woman • The Village School • The Village Farmer • The Village Mechanic • The Village Merchant • The Village Doctor • The Village Marriage • The Village Funeral • The Village Lawsuit The last chapters of the book are dedicated to religion, and most of all, to the evangelization of Korea, the cause to which the whole life of Rev. Moose was devoted. • The Village Religion • The Village Church • Some Members of the Village Church • What Christianity is Doing for the Village One may learn from the following excerpts from the final part of the book that Rev. Moose's belief in the evangelical enlightenment of Korea could be best attested by the miraculous development of Korea in the later part of the century. The key to the future of Korea may be found in the power which Christianity is now instilling into the lives of the village people. ... Let the villages in Korea become completely Christianized, and the future of a happy and prosperous people will be assured, regardless of who may hold the reins of power in the political realm. Virtuo Digital Edition The Virtuo Digital Edition by Virtuosi brings the all time classics of the past back to life with carefully revised contents and formats tailored for today's readers.

This book presents economic statistics of Korea in the past three centuries, focusing on the century following 1910. The data, typically time series rather than cross-sectional, are given in 22 chapters, which refer to population, wages, prices, education, health, national income and wealth, and technology, among others. Rather than simply putting together available data, the contributors to this statistical compendium made adjustments to ensure intertemporal consistency when required. An overview draws attention to the discontinuous shifts occurring over time in the quantity and quality of the statistical information available, which was associated with the regime changes Korea underwent including the imposition of Japanese rule in 1910 and de-colonization and split into two Koreas three and half decades later. Individual chapters begin with a brief introduction, which helps users better understand and use the data. Data sources and references in the Japanese and Korean language are fully provided following the standard Hepburn and McCune–Reischauer Romanization with English translation to assist users to identify materials and explore more deeply the wealth of statistical data waiting to be analyzed.

"Passionate, cantankerous, and fascinating. Rather like Korea itself."--Nicholas D. Kristof, New York Times Book Review Korea has endured a "fractured, shattered twentieth century," and this updated edition brings Bruce Cumings's leading history of the modern era into the present. The small country, overshadowed in the imperial era, crammed against great powers during the Cold War, and divided and decimated by the Korean War, has recently seen the first real hints of reunification. But positive movements forward are tempered by frustrating steps backward. In the late 1990s South Korea survived its most severe economic crisis since the Korean War, forcing a successful restructuring of its political economy. Suffering through floods, droughts, and a famine that cost the lives of millions of people, North Korea has been labeled part of an "axis of evil" by the George W. Bush administration and has renewed its nuclear threats. On both sides Korea seems poised to continue its fractured existence on into the new century, with potential ramifications for the rest of the world.
