How did Tinker Bell get her name? In J. M. Barrie’s original version of the play “Peter Pan,”the little sprite’s name was Tippytoe, and she had speaking lines. But over time, Barrie decided that the fairy’s expressions would be best voiced by musical chimes. During the early 1900s, vagabonds known as tinkers traveled from town to town, performing jack-of-all-trade repair services. Their arrival was hailed by the jingling of bells fashioned from tin that they mounted on their wagons. One of these “tinker bells” was used to give Peter’s fairy friend her voice in the original stage production, and the name stuck. Now, more than a hundred years later, it is difficult to believe that this popular pixie began as a circle of lamplight, reflected in a mirror controlled by a stage hand behind the curtains. She is now the center of a major Disney franchise, she flies through the skies in Orlando and Anaheim introducing the nightly fireworks displays, and she opens every Walt Disney Pictures film with a sprinkling of pixie dust. Tinker Bell: An Evolution is a full biography of the fiery little fairy. Designed in collaboration with the Animation Research library, it contains artwork that has never been seen before. The book is heavily illustrated, highly detailed, and will make the perfect gift for every grown-up who believes in fairies.

This book considers and interrogates a range of new and critical issues in contemporary early childhood education. It discusses both fundamental and emerging topics in the field, and presents them in the context of reflective and contemporary frameworks. Bringing together leading experts whose work is at the cutting edge of contemporary early childhood education theory and research across the world, this book considers the care and education of young children from a global perspective and deals with issues and groups of children or families that are often marginalized. The contributing authors challenge traditional views and maintain that new ways of thinking and doing are required in these new times. The chapters in this book highlight some of the most important issues as catalysts for discussion and critique. Central to the discussions is the notion that these are complex issues that warrant debate and that there are often no simple solutions to them. These theoretical perspectives are situated in practice with the use of engaging case studies. This edited collection is essential reading for anyone studying or working in early childhood education. Contributors: Marina Umaschi Bers, Erica Burman, Judith Duncan, Anne Haas Dyson, Karen Gallas, Rachael Holmes, Elizabeth Jones, Michelle Leiminer, Hillevi Lenz Taguchi, Maggie MacLure, Christina MacRae, Joanna McPake, Veronica Pacini Ketchabaw, Alan Pence, Helen Penn, Lydia Plowman, Valerie Polakow, Christine Stephen, Gail Yuen.

This engaging guide demonstrates how easy, fun, and rewarding it can be to teach and learn coding at the library. In our technology-obsessed society, computer coding is a highly valued and in-demand skill, but many people consider it an activity only for technology geeks and educated professionals—even more so to teach coding. Not so, says author Sarah Kepple. In this accessible guide, she explains why you don't have to be an expert to lead coding, shows how easy and rewarding learning and teaching coding can be, and provides step-by-step instructions to help you and your community get started. The book shows how to engage students quickly with learning activities that springboard off of the powerful appeal of video games. The author takes users through activities that introduce popular programming languages—including GameMaker, JavaScript, Python, and Scratch—to create video games, and in the process, to learn coding. These activities, themed around classic and popular stories, appeal to a broad age range—from elementary-age youth through high school and beyond to adults and seniors. Readers will see why school and public libraries are venues ideally suited for coding classes, workshops, clubs, or camps, and they will understand why teaching coding not only meets an important need but also serves to highlight the library's relevance to its community.
