"Don't miss this fantastic book" - Haywood SmithFrom Benjamin Franklin there comes the old adage : For want of the nail, the shoe was lost : For want the shoe, the rider was lost : For want of the rider, the battle was lost: For want of the battle an empire was lost : The empire was lost all for the want of a nail. How often does that really happen? That a single tiny mistake causes an entire civilization to collapse? The reader will be amazed how often it happens over and over again. Some examples as follows: - A single document poorly designed by one single clerk in one single county changed the outcome of a presidential election and led directly to a major war. - A soldier accidentally kicks a helmet off of the top of a wall and causes an empire to collapse. - A small mechanical device several inches long fails to function ; This changes the outcome of WWII and leads to the death of millions of people. - A man who was president of a nation was also commanding a large army in the field facing a dangerous enemy. But when the expected attack from the enemy came, he was in his tent, high on opium, cavorting with a beautiful young slave woman. The battle led to the founding of a new nation and a famous song was later written about the beautiful young woman. These and many more: Hypnotic and addictive, this book is a review of the seemingly tiny mistakes that led to the collapse of grand civilizations. Human weakness at it very worst at critical moments. The Butterfly Effect in human history: The many tiny mistakes that changed the world we live in today. Are you interested in baking someone into a process at work? Leading a paradigm shift? Or maybe you just feel like drilling down after a nice data dump so you can flesh out a straw dog to help everyone get their ducks in a row and sing from the same song-sheet. Whether you understood any of that or had no idea what you just read, you've probably heard these expressions lobbed around the corporate world with some regularity. What does all of this mean? In meetings on his first job out of college, James Sudakow found himself struggling to pick up a bizarre new language: corporate-speak. He pretended to know what they were saying, but in actuality, he had no idea what expressions like "singing from the same song sheet" or "picking the low hanging fruit" meant or why strange phrases like these were being used to talk about business operations. Had he missed something important in his education that would have prepared him for this? With time, Sudakow adapted to the language; and much to his own embarrassment, he found himself actually using many of these same expressions. For his own sanity, he came up with a plan to combat this corporate-speak language - and it all started with a whiteboard in his office. He listed all of the words and phrases his colleagues, even superiors, were not allowed to use in his office - less they allowed themselves to be subjected to some form of office hazing. "I wondered if we all knew how ridiculous we sounded using these generally weird phrases, instead of just speaking in plain English." Sudakow says."I wanted to call attention to the way we were all communicating and see if we could change it." Ironically, not only did his experiment not deter their use of any of the expressions on his whiteboard, Sudakow found that his colleagues put up with the hazing with seemingly far too much enjoyment and also began to actually, if not enthusiastically, add additional phrases to his whiteboard, taking great pride in their contributions. That whiteboard became the premise for his new book, "Picking the Low-Hanging Fruit... and Other Stupid Stuff We Say in the Corporate World," a humorous corporate glossary that sheds an irreverent light on the weird things we say in the corporate world every day.

1789 written by David Andress and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-03 with History categories.

The world in 1789 stood on the edge of a unique transformation. At the end of an unprecedented century of progress, the fates of three nations—France; the nascent United States; and their common enemy, Britain—lay interlocked. France, a nation bankrupted by its support for the American Revolution, wrestled to seize the prize of citizenship from the ruins of the old order. Disaster loomed for the United States, too, as it struggled, in the face of crippling debt and inter-state rivalries, to forge the constitutional amendments that would become known as the Bill of Rights. Britain, a country humiliated by its defeat in America, recoiled from tales of imperial greed and the plunder of India as a king's madness threw the British constitution into turmoil. Radical changes were in the air. A year of revolution was crowned in two documents drafted at almost the same time: the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the American Bill of Rights. These texts gave the world a new political language and promised to foreshadow new revolutions, even in Britain. But as the French Revolution spiraled into chaos and slavery experienced a rebirth in America, it seemed that the budding code of individual rights would forever be matched by equally powerful systems of repression and control. David Andress reveals how these events unfolded and how the men who led them, such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès, and George Washington, stood at the threshold of the modern world. Andress shows how the struggles of this explosive year—from the inauguration of George Washington to the birth of the cotton trade in the American South; from the British Empire's war in India to the street battles of the French Revolution—would dominate the Old and New Worlds for the next two centuries.

Superdove written by Courtney Humphries and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-12 with Nature categories.

Why do we see pigeons as lowly urban pests and how did they become such common city dwellers? Courtney Humphries traces the natural history of the pigeon, recounting how these shy birds that once made their homes on the sparse cliffs of sea coasts came to dominate our urban public spaces. While detailing this evolution, Humphries introduces us to synanthropy: The concept that animals can become dependent on humans without ceasing to be wild; they can adapt to the cityscape as if it were a field or a forest. Superdove simultaneously explores the pigeon's cultural transformation, from its life in the dovecotes of ancient Egypt to its service in the trenches of World War I, to its feats within the pigeon-racing societies of today. While the dove is traditionally recognized as a symbol of peace, the pigeon has long inspired a different sort of fetishistic devotion from breeders, eaters, and artists—and from those who recognized and exploited the pigeon's astounding abilities. Because of their fecundity, pigeons were symbols of fertility associated with Aphrodite, while their keen ability to find their way home made them ideal messengers and even pilots. Their usefulness largely forgotten, today's pigeons have become as ubiquitous and reviled as rats. But Superdove reveals something more surprising: By using pigeons for our own purposes, we humans have changed their evolution. And in doing so, we have helped make pigeons the ideal city dwellers they are today. In the tradition of Rats, the book that made its namesake rodents famous, Superdove is the fascinating story of the pigeon's journey from the wild to the city—the home they'll never leave.

"My uncle laughed so hard he went red, and we had to give him one of his pills" In this book.... Hear about the time a spiritual guru steamed himself to death in a giant pot, along with some corn and steamed buns? Or the time a president projectile vomited on a prime minister at a state banquet. Was it something they said? Back in New York in February 1940 at the world premiere of Walt Disney's Pinocchio. Walt had hired 11 midgets, dressed them up as Pinocchio and put them on top of Radio City Music Hall. The idea was they could wave to the children entering the theatre. However, in a moment of inspiration, someone sent up alcohol with their lunch. So by the middle of the afternoon, there were 11 drunken, naked midgets cavorting on the roof and screaming obscenities at the crowd. They had to be removed by police, who carried them away in pillowcases. As the great Professor Stephen Hawking once said, "Stupidity remains the biggest threat to mankind." No truer words have ever been spoken; so we might as well enjoy it. Get or Give hours of amusement - scroll up and click the BUY NOW button
