During the First World War, mass media achieved an enormous and continuously growing importance in all belligerent countries. Newspaper, illustrated magazines, comics, pamphlets, and instant books, fi ctional works, photography, and the new-born “theater of imagery”, the cinema, were crucial in order to create a heroic vision of the events, to mobilize and maintain the consensus on the war. But their role was pivotal also in creating the image of the war’s end and fi nally, together with a widespread, new literary genre, the war memoirs, to shape the collective memory of the confl ict for the next generations. Even before November 1918, the media raised high expectations for a multifaceted peace: a new global order, the beginning of a peaceful era, the occasion for a regenerating apocalypse. Likewise, in the following decades, particularly war literature and cinema were pivotal to reverse the icon of the Great War as an epic crusade and a glorious chapter of the national history and to create the hegemonic image of a senseless carnage. The Mediatization of War and Peace focalizes on the central role played by mass media in the tortuous transition to the post-war period as well as on the profound disenchantment generated by their prophesies.

[Italiano]: Quest’opera nasce a partire dagli interventi presentati nel corso del seminario di ricerca della Società Italiana per lo Studio della Storia Contemporanea (SISSCO) dal titolo Classi dirigenti e territori in età contemporanea. Asimmetrie tra centri e periferie, continuità e discontinuità. Il caso italiano (1861-2015), organizzato tra fine 2016 e inizio 2017, con il coordinamento del Centro di ricerca “Guido Dorso” per lo studio del pensiero meridionalistico di Avellino. This work arises from the presentations held during the research seminar of the Italian Society for the Study of Contemporary History (SISSCO) titled Ruling classes and spaces in the contemporary period. Asymmetries between centres and peripheries, continuities and discontinuities. The Italian case (1861-2015), organized between the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017 and coordinated by the Centro di ricerca “Guido Dorso” per lo studio del pensiero meridionalistico. The volume is conceived as a test for the vitality of a field of study of historiography on contemporary Italy: that on the various sectors of the country’s elite from Risorgimento to present days. This effort has been made through direct discussion between scholars, paying particular attention to the territorial diversities and the political and institutional changes. The work offers a rich and multifaceted collection of essays, focusing on different geographical areas and segments of the Italian ruling classes, based on different methodological approaches and various sources.

Prende così possesso di vaste aree, in parte adiacenti ai confini – come il Tirolo, parte della Carinzia e il Litorale austriaco – e altre oltremare, come la Dalmazia, l'Albania, la costa dell'Anatolia. Contemporaneamente, invia missioni militari verso Vienna, la Renania, la Slesia, la Bulgaria, sino in Russia, in Siberia e in Estremo Oriente. Occupazioni e presenze militari sono strumenti essenziali per la politica estera italiana, che si impegna a fondo per conseguire gli obiettivi della partecipazione dell'Italia al conflitto: al di là della liberazione delle terre irredente dal dominio asburgico, ciò che si vuole è il riconoscimento per il Paese del ruolo di grande potenza, un'influenza sullo spazio danubiano-balcanico pari a quella dell'ex Austria-Ungheria e pari alla Francia e all'Inghilterra nel Mediterraneo orientale. È un errore: sopravvalutare le forze condurrà al fallimento dei disegni più ambiziosi e la politica estera faticherà molto a disegnare la propria strada nel mondo del dopoguerra. Intanto, nei territori destinati all'annessione, le amministrazioni militari offrono ai nuovi cittadini la prima immagine dell'Italia. Ai governatori viene chiesto di adoperarsi per facilitare l'integrazione, ma sono loro a decidere come farlo, in particolare nei confronti di quanti quell'annessione non la desiderano affatto. Politica interna e politica estera, compimento dell'unità nazionale e sogni imperiali si intrecciano dunque in un nodo arduo da gestire per i contemporanei e fino a oggi difficile da interpretare per gli studiosi.
