"Showing how photo interpreters and intelligence analysts used aerial reconnaissance photographs to discover, identify, and expose enemy camouflage, To Fool a Glass Eye presents more than 350 U.S., British, and German photographs taken during World War II, many of which have never before been published. The book explains camouflage and photo interpretation techniques in detail, documenting successful and failed efforts by the United States, Australia, Britain, the Soviet Union, Germany, and Japan to conceal a range of objects - from soldiers and battleships to munitions factories, airfields, and bridges." "Author Roy M. Stanley II, head of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency's photography lab during the review and declassification of World War II photographs in the early 1980s, reveals a remarkable cat and mouse game, in which ground forces tried to conceal sensitive military targets from reconnaissance photographers, and photo analysts learned to spot camouflage and to distinguish decoys from the real thing. He also persuasively demonstrates how, in the long run, it was nearly impossible to fool the glass eye of the reconnaissance camera."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. 'But what if we are all fictioneers? What if we all continually make up the stories of our lives? (...) Our life-stories are ours to construct as we wish, within or even against the constraints imposed by the real world...' J.M. COETZEE A writer in her late thirties retreats to Landes in France for a while, fleeing from her own suffering after the break-up of a relationship. Little by little, she finds solace in writing about the losses in her life, about her person, and about indifference and freedom, and in sharing the doubts that arise in her creative process with a 'you' whom she imagines to be on the other side of the paper. The glass eye, a self-referential element of the authorprotagonist and metaphor for pain and transcendence, also represents the literary concept of the work, a private notebook where fiction imitates and replaces a fragmented reality.

For his latest book Colonel Roy Stanley presents aerial photographs of the German and Italian fleets that were selected as important six decades ago and have long lain dormant, unindexed and unexplained. Extensive use of aerial and other Intelligence imagery from long retired files would be enough to make this book a must for those intrigued by World War II intelligence and naval history. But it is the author's commentary that makes this work truly unique, thanks to his aerial photo interpretation experience, ability to provide Intelligence analysis, and academic background. Meticulously researched for ship identification, the eye of an experienced PI sees things others might miss, and the author tells us what he sees. Some of these photos may have appeared in contemporary documents but never with the insight presented in this book. We see warships under attack, at sea and in harbor as captured by photo reconnaissance. Analysis of selective enlargements adds to the understanding. Even the most devout follower of warships will learn something.

The V-1 and much larger V-2 rockets added a terrifying extra dimension to the Second World War. Once launched there was little that could stop the V-1s and nothing to prevent the V-2s from reaching their targets. Both were indiscriminate and struck with little or no warning. Their destructive power was awesome but it was their psychological impact on the defenseless civil population that posed such a threat to morale. This remarkable book tells, through words and images, the story of the Allied discovery, understanding and campaign against the Vengeance weapons. Written by a trained intelligence analyst and aerial photo interpreter, V Weapons Hunt picks out the air photographs that found the breakthrough in this vital campaign. The reader sees the first sighting of a V-1 flying bomb at the Peenemunde research facility, weapon launch sites, production facilities as well as the damage caused by Allied raids. This is a scholarly and authoritative work which lifts the lid on how Allied intelligence provided the information to defeat this insidious threat before it caused not only massive destruction but the delay of the Normandy invasion.

Despite the Luftwaffe being ordered to destroy millions of aerial photos in 1945, the Allies found no less than twenty tons of photos in eleven locations, including a hoard in a Bavarian barn. These together with vast numbers of photographs taken by German soldiers used for Intelligence analysis were put into classified Allied Intelligence files at a time when USAAF and RAF imagery was being destroyed. Covering Iron Curtain countries they were valuable for cartography and target intelligence during the Cold War.The captured German imagery (called GX) in this book show what the German Army knew about the Soviet Union before and during Operation Barbarossa. Examples show Eastern Front landforms, key cities such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Sevastopol, Leningrad and factories. They are accompanied by helpful comments from a skilled photo interpreter. This unique and diverse collection, some taken from 28,000 feet overhead, others taken by soldiers on the ground, reveal the war on the Eastern Front as it has never been seen before.

Holocaust Archaeologies written by Caroline Sturdy Colls and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-28 with Social Science categories.

Holocaust Archaeologies: Approaches and Future Directions aims to move archaeological research concerning the Holocaust forward through a discussion of the variety of the political, social, ethical and religious issues that surround investigations of this period and by considering how to address them. It considers the various reasons why archaeological investigations may take place and what issues will be brought to bear when fieldwork is suggested. It presents an interdisciplinary methodology in order to demonstrate how archaeology can (uniquely) contribute to the history of this period. Case examples are used throughout the book in order to contextualise prevalent themes and a variety of geographically and typologically diverse sites throughout Europe are discussed. This book challenges many of the widely held perceptions concerning the Holocaust, including the idea that it was solely an Eastern European phenomena centred on Auschwitz and the belief that other sites connected to it were largely destroyed or are well-known. The typologically , temporally and spatial diverse body of physical evidence pertaining to this period is presented and future possibilities for investigation of it are discussed. Finally, the volume concludes by discussing issues relating to the “re-presentation” of the Holocaust and the impact of this on commemoration, heritage management and education. This discussion is a timely one as we enter an age without survivors and questions are raised about how to educate future generations about these events in their absence.

Geography And Technology written by Stanley D. Brunn and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-03-31 with History categories.

This volume celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Association of American Geographers. It recognizes the importance of technologies in the production of geographical knowledge. The original chapters presented here examine technologies that have affected geography as a discipline. Among the technologies discussed are cartography, the camera, aerial photography, computers, and other computer-related tools. The contributors address the impact of such technologies on geography and society, disciplinary inquiries into the social/technological interfaces, high-tech as well low-tech societies, and applications of technologies to the public and private sectors. Geography and Technology can be used as a textbook in geography courses and seminars investigating specific technologies and the impacts of technologies on society and policy. It will also be useful for those in the humanities, social, policy and engineering sciences, planning and development fields where technology questions are becoming of increased importance. Geography clearly has much to learn from other disciplines and fields about geography/technology linkages; others can likewise learn much from us.
